I believe you were trying to get out "barbershop quartet". The Doobie Brothers were close but as far as I know never tried for or managed the "fifth voice" a real barbershop quartet can do. (That's when their voices' harmonies merge into what sounds like a fifth singer's voice.)

The " black guy " you speak of was the great bass player Tiran Porter...He did sing the low harmonies and he was a student in my mom's high school English class in LA !

The vocalist here is Patrick Simmons, which is the second one from the right. I think this is before Michael McDonald joined the band. He's whos voice sounds kind of cottony. He had a solo album with a good song called, "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)."

Michael McDonald also had a stint with the group Chicago & Steely Dan's "Peg" as the chorus background vocals and then also had a duet hit in the mid to late 80's with Patti Labelle called "On My Own"

He is playing a fiddle.The black guy is the bass player.They all harmonize, The Doobie Bros. have a lot to offer.

The radio station played this song about 50 times per day in the early 70's when I was about 10 years old. One of the songs I didn't mind listening to over and over.

Quartet is the word you're looking for I believe. This was one of my dads fave bands and songs I love this song bc it reminds me of him and it makes me tap my feet. Watching your reaction to the end brought me so much joy. Which your channel usually does. Thanks for the happiness

The original singer for The DB was Tom Johnson ("Listen To The Music", "China Grove", & "Long Train Runnin'") "Black Water" was lead by Patrick Simmons (guitar), who wrote it & was the first of the two of two hits in 1975. 🌟🌟🌟Michael McDonald: who had sang with Steely Dan joined as a fill in for Tom but his vocals, well, they kept him. ("Takin It To The Streets", "Minute By Minute", & "What A Fool Believes" - which you heard.) I will say this - hardcore DB fans seem to gravitate to Tom Johnson. The Doobies are one of the very few bands from 50 years ago that still tour with most original members intact. And they sound every bit as good as they ever did, if not better. A testament of their dedication to their craft.

My understanding is that "fiddle" means pressing the bow against two strings at once, which produces that particular sound. I have no idea if this is actually true, and I honestly can't remember where I heard or read that

This is one of my FSOAT's (Favorite Songs of All Time). I remember it playing on the juke box in the junior high commons area back in about 1975. Oh, and Barbershop Quartet is what you're thinking of, I beleive.

Miss my dad. Shitty old Ford pickup going to hard labor jobs rocking out to this. We sang back and forth on this one. Music like this can bring us all together

There are two iterations of The Doobie Brothers: the Tom Johnson years and the Michael McDonald years. Yes, Tom rejoined the group after he recovered from his illness, but the difference in sound between the two leads is palpable. I MUCH prefer the TJ years. Their early stuff is just amazing. And this is my favorite DB song by far. Thanks for the reaction. I loved watching your eyes during the outro.

I agree, the TJ years were great...because they were one of the groundbreaking bands who created the standards others have since, tried to meet. There are so many elements that went into the DB, that made them the iconic band they are. When MM came in, he saved the band. His lead, his songs, the inspiration that there would be DB music still, yet and again. In the time between when TJ left and MM started, the DB sucked as a live band. Understandable, and for a while they had the reputation of being a studio only band. I like all the iterations of the DB. MM evolved their music, refined their sound. I’m particularly fond of a DB horn player, the late Cornelius Bumpus. After Corny left the DB he played with Steely Dan for many years. Like the times they’re from, a point came when they were forced to adapt and change to just to survive. Thankfully, it clicked. They more than survived, they flourished with a bold new sound, while retaining the charm of the DB. One of my all time favs!

Yup, the TJ years definitely win out for the overall vibe of the music. That's not to take anything away from MM, because his voice is amazing in its own right, but I just felt that the Doobies vibe changed with him in a direction that wasn't as good--not bad, just not as good.

The Doobies are a true American Band. Got some country, got some folk, some bluegrass some rock and roll, put it all together and you get the Doobies. I like Toms' singing more than Michaels' but it is all super groovy. Puff Freely!

A "quartet," I believe, is what you're looking for. This is my favorite iteration of the band. My folks were big fans and took me to see them three times in the early to mid-seventies. Check out "Long Train Runnin'," or "Listen to the Music." ✌

Your parents sound like they were excellent parents! Any parents who loved the Doobie Brothers and actually took their kids to three of their concerts are alright in my book! 🎸🎸🎸 My parents were as square as square could be. My dad only listened to old time fiddle music from the Maritimes and my mom was too timid to sort herself out over music, afraid that my dad would have a fit, so they hardly listened to anything except country radio. And what I mentioned. I grew up in the 60s and 70s (born in 1958) on Motown and rock. What years those were for music!!! About the year 2000 or so my mom told me that she actually liked Elvis Presley back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. You could have pushed me over with a feather. She said my dad would have freaked out if she listened to him so she did it vicariously through my sisters' Elvis records. As I said, my dad was very square. In fact, that is an insult to squares. He was just a hill-billy red-neck for the most part, who thought he knew everything but hardly knew anything in reality. It is sad to have a parent like that. He hated rock and roll and called them "long haired hippie Christers!" With a curse. Anyway, as you can see I did not get along with him and didn't even much like him.

They are kind of singing at the end "a round." It's a type of harmony where one member sings the beginning of a verse and then a few beats later a response is played and this is done over again where the second time around starts before the response is finished. The best known version of a round is Row Row your Boat.

The Black one is Tiran Porter, he doesn't sing lead. But he provides the most memorable bass lines! The bass on "Long Train Runnin'" (sung by Tom Johnston) and "Takin' it to the Streets" (sung by Michael McDonald) will stick with you forever.

He did sing lead occasionally on songs he wrote. "Need a Lady" from Livin' on the Fault Line album is him singing lead. But he was known more for his bass playing, for sure.

If you are in a tux or evening gown or playing a classical piece it's a violin. Otherwise it's a fiddle LOL. Great harmonies is a trademark of this band.

The guy on the extreme left is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. He played with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. Now you'd probably see him testifying in front of congress on missile defense technology.

I saw them with my parents in 1978 I think Eddie Money was the opening act. It was at the New Haven CT colosseum. What a great concert at 11 years old. There were tons of beach balls and frisbees ,but what they had the most of was weed. Joints were being passed around from person to person. Never smell it before and asked what the smell was..They just laughed. Maybe they had some too. That was the original members I believe at that time I believe. Great music. Brings back soo many memories

Michael McDonald did a duet with Patti LaBelle called “on my own“ Doobie Brothers head three singers Tommy Johnston, Patrick Simmons and then when Tommy left the band Michael McDonald was brought on board.
