  • @frankhumbug

    @frankhumbug

    Nobunaga1981, without looking it up or knowing enough about it, I'd have to postulate that the instruments, (on Cassini,) used to record these sounds, were as Iight as possible and as advanced as they could be, considering all the different types of equipment (on Cassini.) As v-101 mentions, the sounds recorded were then changed to make them audible for humans. I don't remember the opening titles to Alien but I am aware of (sort of 🙃) the way "Spooky" &/ snyths were being used as atmospheric textures in a lot of sci-fi/horror/fantasy (particularly space based,) soundtracks from (films such as,) the day the earth stood still (yes Theremin,) 2001 and (then,) lots of movies in 70's. Thru the difficult but necessary transition of analogue to digital 80's and now seemingly ever present 2010's. But I'm just doodling, and I have to (get ready and,) go to work now, see ya. (Edit) thanks for replying, also I should have spelt synth properly.

    @ AJS That's not exactly true. Even though no human has been to Saturn to actually take a whiff, by examining spectra of light reflecting from different levels of Saturn's atmosphere we can tell that it has a primarily Hydrogen atmosphere but with significant Methane and Ammonia and some Nitrogen and Oxygen. Hydrogen and Nitrogen has no smell and oxygen doesn't have much of a smell unless it is in it's Ozone form, but with the same mixture of Nitrogen and Oxygen, Methane and Ammonia here on Earth, you could get a breath into your lungs and your nose could detect the Methane as a flatulence smell and the Ammonia as a urine or cleaning product smell. So Saturn wouldn't be particularly pleasant. Just FYI, apparently Uranus' atmosphere has a very pungent smell because of it's higher composition of Methane and Ammonia.

    He mentions in the video @ 1:57 that Cassini's radio and plasma wave instruments picked up this signal, which is a genuine radio signal that is produced from high energy particles screaming around a planet's magnetic field where they converge at the poles, and that radio signal was translated to acoustic sound, just like a stereo speaker does with it's electrical signal, and then the high frequency was tuned down to a frequency that humans could hear. Ordinarily this sound would be ultrasonic. So, no, floating through Saturn's clouds, you wouldn't hear this particular sound. I know, the scientifically illiterate and ignorantly sceptical will say this means this sound is fake, but it really is just a way for scientists to make the measurements of these instruments more relatable to us, the ordinary laypeople. At least these phenomena are real as opposed to the fakery and trickery used in detecting ghost whispers and screams from beyond the grave and the like.
