This is what happens when you turn on a Pipe Organ
Музыка
Chords: I've added subtitles to the video that shows you what chords I play and when. The pattern is a simple C - Eb - F - C transition with some leading notes.
This website can help with learning what the chords look like: www.pianochord.org/
(no association, I just googled it)

The St. Paul's pipe organ, in Hamilton New Zealand, is a tracker organ, this means all the keys are physically connected to the control sliders on the pipes. The only electrical parts of the instrument are the lights and the blower providing the air pressure. This means, that when the organ is turned on or off, I can keep the pipes open to the increasing or decreasing air pressure as the blower starts up or powers down.
This creates a super cool effect! It means you can hear certain pipes increase in sound as their required operating pressure is reached, first the smaller ones and finally the biggest ones.
Also yes, I've played this start-up effect during for a service musical outro interlude. It got a lot of puzzled looks and head-turns as you might expect haha

I just keep listening to this - so eerie and yet so fascinating! The startup just sounds like some majestic rise to greatness. The shutdown at the very end reminds me of the music used in Terminator 2: Judgment Day when the T1000 is shattered into a thousand fragments. Also the closing bars of Neptune in Holst's The Planets suite when those angelic voices fade out.

Having spent 20 years in the stone chapels of Cambridge, I beg for carpet and wood. There is such thing as too much reverb.
Wow! The beginning sounds awesome!
Ok, got it. At first, you arm the pipe organ. After that, you deploy it.
There are a bunch of flue pipes at 0:43 to 0:45 which are reasonably in tune at the much lower wind pressure. I have noticed some pennywhistles sound ok with very low air pressure. It would make an interesting "fernflote" or something, to have pipes voiced on a tenth of an inch of wind, or whatever it is.

I visit this video 1 to 2 times a week. It’s such a cool sound.
Biblically accurate THX theme.
I remember enjoy doing exactly that when I started playing church organs in the early-70s :) It's a very eerie sound when done in an empty church, especially since you can't control the volume of these beasts. I actually, every now and then, still do this trick when starting up my vintage Hammond organ: the tonegenerator takes some time to spin up too ;)
@DGneoseeker1

Some of them do actually have a volume control device for at least one manual.
After having a major re-configuring of the space in the front of the church I attend, we had a most terrifying moment. The organ console, which had been disconnected and moved out the construction area, had been re-connected and our organ tech flipped the switch. Every stop and every note fired all at once! The organ crew, and all of the trades workers jumped about 20' in the air from the blast. It was not how things were going to start up now, but rather the beginning of a situation which has led 10 years later to having to replace the entire control system of the organ.
This is the most unreal sound I’ve ever heard, I need a high quality recording of this.
Right at 0:03 is what creeps me out. just the fact that it starts dead silent and gets louder. and also that he starts with a c minor chord makes it even better.

hauntingly beautiful to hear the organ played as it shuts off thank you
The reason why the sound fades in and out is the electricity makes the air flow through the pipes. Centuries ago before turbines, you had to pump a level up an down on the side of the console to make the air flow through the pipes.
Man, that sounds so flipping cool.
Just hold down all the Gs for the true THX sound

I've never heard anything like this, so eerie! I was organist for many years when I was young, mainly got to play smaller-sized instruments with about 20 ranks total and I've never heard this effect to anywhere near this extent.
That beautiful fade at the end.
That's one of the most unsettling things I've ever heard! They should totally use an effect like that in a horror movie...
I'm surprised this doesn't have millions of views because of the KZread algorithm.

An acoustic Synclavier of sorts. Cool.
Had to watch this a few times. Dynamite! Nice pants. 🤘
Also very nice to open the registers half way so the pipes don't get full air pressure. As a teenagers I used to play the beautiful Pels & van Leeuwen church organ in the Wilhelmina church in Soest (NL). And then you are doing things like this...
this organ is very good voiced
Shutting down sound is so creepy and scary! I can easily imagine it in a thriller.

Oh this is amazing can I use this in my own music? Sampling & using this as the bed for a track seems really fun
Such a lovely instrument installed in a room with carpet and padded seating. Nobody will ever hear the full majesty of this instrument. This church would be better off selling the pipe organ and getting themselves a nice digital instrument. They could sell this Létourneau in a heartbeat, well, in a few other continents anyway 😉 OR installing tile floors and lightweight movable chairs (much less expensive too). Just my humble opinion, which is worth about the usual two cents. The fact is, padding and carpeting have no place in a church. They are perfect breeding grounds for bacteria and odor and change the acoustic drastically in a negative way.
Einojuhani Rautavaara used this effect in his organ concerto.
Sounds interesting

Not me trying to play a pipe organ at 3 am and not wake up my parents
when you reverse the sound of it turning off, it sounds kinda like when you enter a space tunnel then you reach an abrupt end where you can't hear anything

'Set the co-ordinates for the Pyramid of Mars...'
Sounds genuinely creepy when they shut it off; as though the thing were a living creature that was dying...
now what happens when you play when its off? it should still work with the remaining air in the bellows
Is this organ voiced on a high wind pressure, (romantic style), cause I play on a baroque revival instrument and the power-up isn't as dramatic and happens quite quickly for me, since the pipes speak on low pressure.
@structuralmusicdesign
3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about the details of the wind pressure, but the instrument is built in the French romantic style evident by the radiated pedal board. The dramatic power-up could also be due to the type of air pump the organ uses? Might just be a little slow to get going.

Anyone familiar with the “START/RUN” sequence on a certain tonewheel-generated Organ...? I can’t help hearing a big similarity...!
An organ piece by Luigi Nono start with such an effect . This organ seems to be well built . I guess it might be something like a 25 stops organ , 2 keyboards + pedalboard. Here , though we call this a full organ , we are probably hearing 12 stops ( the next 13 would not add much to the volume ): Great : principal 8 ft , principal 4 , 2" and mixtures . Choir : Flute 8 " , principals 4,2 + cymbals. Pedal : Bassoon 16 ' + principal 8,4 and mixtrures . ( With a well designed 25 stops instrument , 99 % of Bach's music can be played on such an organ. NB In Italy , from 1550 to 1800 and even more, classical italian organs were a 1 keyboard ,10 stops instruments and Italians were satisfied of it . When Frescobaldi , top organist of his time , came to Rome St-Peter's Basilica , a new church at the time , in 1607 , he had a 10 stops instruments with a 5 pedals ( Ut re fa sol la ) pedalboard with no indepent stops . They played the same notes as the great , the only keyboard available . Imagine , a 10 stops organ in Sixtine Chapel , the largest nave of the christian faith , even today ! )
