It’s late at night and you’re tucked into bed, waiting to fall asleep. Just as you’re finally drifting off, you hear the sound of something moving next to your head. Jolting upright, you check the pillow and surrounding sheets for the source of the noise. But nothing’s there…
Laying back down, you try to relax. As your eyes close, you hear a rustling sound in your left ear. Frantically looking around, again you find nothing.
This is maddening.
You start to wonder…
Is it all in your head?
And when you feel something move inside your ear, you’re horrified by how right you really are.

    I woke up once with a fly in my ear - I heard buzzing and scratching and felt the crawling in my ear in the middle of the night. Had I been fully awake, I probably would’ve freaked tf out, but I was so tired and done with the impromptu wakeup call that I distinctly remember thinking “I’m not going to A&E for this”. I plugged my nose with one hand, opened up my ear with the other, and tried to pop my ears. Little f*cker finally flew out after about 30 seconds, I smacked it flat against the wall and I went straight back to sleep 😂

    I've had a critter inside my ear as a kid. It lived and died there-- its carcass came out together with earwax and it was so mangled and incorporated into the earwax that I couldn't recognize what kind of insect/arachnid it was. It wasn't super traumatic but now in my 30s, I've started to wear my IEMs to sleep, listening to ASMR. Now I'm wondering if I just like ASMR for sleep or my subconscious is just trying to prevent the same ear invasion from happening again.

    My mom and i have both been bitten by brown recluse spiders. It melted a quarter sized hole on my hip. That whole "spider in the ear canal" thing actually made me happy! First of all, because I live in a part of the world where there is only one type of spider living that's strong enough to bite humans, and those are too big to fit in anyone's earhole. And secondly, the one time in the US a spider bit me during the night, it was only a relatively harmless mountain spider, and it bit me behind the ear. 😅

    @@apple-cv2xj Yes, of course they could! 👍🏻 But given my careless personality and habits, they'd be crushed within 24 hours. I tend to have allergies all year round, and therefore my ear canals are itching pretty often. And I know that's an absolute No-Go, but I usually take a cotton swab, stick it into my ear and wiggle around, until the itch is relieved. And maybe this may lead to a tiny spider biting me one day. And this then will be a major inconvenience, and also pretty painful, I'd guess. So, let's hope this never happens!

    I have little doubt that people have swallowed spiders in their sleep. The house I grew up in very often had brown recluses ("very often" here meaning they could be found almost daily). I had even woken up to one just sitting on my chest. The biggest issue with the "8 spiders" thing, to me, is that there is no way to even try to track this statistic. The whole point is that you wouldn't know that you've done it.

  • @Nylak-Otter

    @Nylak-Otter

    4 ай бұрын

    My recluses aren't aggressive unless you hurt them. Just wear gloves and watch where you're putting your hands, and don't let logs tumble or shift off the pile. Same thing as indoors; shake out your sheets, loose clothes and shoes before use. They'll just run off rather than try to bite you. Even if they do bite, the bites are quite easy to treat, especially if you go to a doctor or urgent care for extra treatment. I find their toxicity to be greatly exaggerated, in my personal experience.

    @@GreatSageSunWukong Well I'm in Queensland Australia, and we get a mix. A few spiders around, couple flies, some mozzies and the occasional moth. The moths are the only ones I'm ok with, since they don't fly around much, aren't creepy, and they don't bite. Unfortunately I sometimes get cockroaches as well. Less bugs overall during winter though.

    I do not sleep with my mouth open at all. My tounge rests on the top of my pallate just beind the ridge of my top pallate so I do not bite my tounge in the middle of the night. And my jaw slacks but my lips stay tightly shut. It is the same way my mouth is shut during the day as well. I breath through my nose at all times. Even when it gets stuffed up; due to my ENT fixing my nose he made it so straight that even when my nose gets stuffy I can still breath out of it.

    Thank god the worst I've had try to get in my ear is house flies, fruit flies or mosquitos (as well as into my nose). While a lot less deadly, its still something I dont want to happen (ie it tickles, and I dont much like the thought of a bug, dead or alive, in any part of my body)

    Humans have a chew and swallow reflex while asleep, and spiders stick to walls while moving if they can, so most people chew and swallow them pretty fast. I have seen it happen once before and it destroyed me

    i never had 8 legged crawler in my ear but i did have small moth fly directly in my ear when i walked out from garage and i can say it was not fun. the noise made it sound larger and it also got bit painful sine it was panicking in my ear but after going to ER they flushed it out with saline and all was good
