We’ve all been there- awakening from a long, dream-filled sleep, but instead of feeling rested, your body feels tight and sore. A bad sleep now and then isn’t the end of the world, but what if every sleep was bad? For one Reddit user, every single night was a practice in pain tolerance. Let’s get into it.

I think normal people stay up way past their bedtime then try to cram as much sleep into as little hours as possible because they feel they never have enough time for themselves so they try to make up for it before bed. This always backfires as they are then tired the next day. I am guilty too. It is one hour and thirty minutes past my bedtime.

You know you're right. Whenever I or the person sleeping next to me has experienced sleep paralysis, they have always been on their back, except for once, when I accidentally overdosed on the muscle relaxer phenibut. Unlike my spouse and others, though, I never sensed any impending doom or fear, I just realized I couldn't move and coaxed myself back to sleep. Except once I saw a puppy sitting at the end of my bed, but that was more confusing than anything.

The way I have sleep paralysis in a seemingly weird way. Also, I can move it it’s extremely difficult (by moving I mean flexing my fingers). It feels like a super strong wind blowing on my body when I move. Then, it’s such a weird feeling when you “wake up” after the sleep paralysis in a different position.

Funny, I suffered from sleep paralysis and was very scared to have to face it, I still have it, but then I learned that it's a free ticket to a lucid dream, so when I'm having sleep paralysis I just imagine myself in a place and suddenly I am there, so now I'm kinda grateful when it happens cause it's a free lucid dream, if not the best thing you can do if you realize you're having sleep paralysis is to stay calm and not open your eyes, as that can make you panic fast by hallucinating weird or scary stuff, and rather just coaxing yourself to sleep again

The design of the stomach is why heartburn is more likely when laying on right side. Think of the stomach as a bottle with two openings, top and bottom. It lays sideways starting at the solar plexus where there is an opening to the throat. The bottom of the bottle, (right rib-ish, almost to side of body) hooks up to the intestines. If you lay on left, the throat opening is covered by whatever solids or liquids is in the stomach. Any gas present would rise up towards the intestine access point. Thereby the gas can not get to the throat-access to burn its lining.

I remember sleeping on a rock-solid "pillow" , with half of my neck and my head on the pillow, and the rest on the bed. I woke up with a pain, I felt the back of my neck and if felt like my spine just ended right on the middle of my neck. Ever since, I have had back and neck issues. I quickly decided to be very particular in the way I sleep. I think what happened is the part under the pillow got pushed up, and eventually was quite offset from the rest of the spine. I have been able to mostly get it back in the right place, but it's still a problematic area.

3:17 Doing this solved the bout of back pain I started experiencing earlier this year. I had a tendency to throw one leg past the other, which would lead to one side being more stretched than the other by morning. The imbalance would lead to back strain. Not only did it keep me aligned, it also reduced morning stiffness by promoting blood flow as I slept (you will involuntarily squeeze the pillow between your thighs as you sleep)

Brew my bro, I can't tell you how much I share your experience of insomnia. I have put much personal effort into improving my sleep over the years, and the number one disruptor of sleep (for me at least) has been anxiety. Living a life of over-intellectualization and not enough physical activity makes it so the brain can't rest when its time to rest. Over-thinking and over-analyzing, in addition to separating the body from the mind (tool reference), makes it so the mind is given more power than the body and the imbalance greatly disrupts sleep. The experience of an overactive mind can roughly be defined as "anxiety". The worst part of it all: coffee is essentially liquid anxiety. A certain amount of anxiety is helpful and lets you get more work done, just like having extra coffee helps you be more productive because it takes you out of a state of restfulness. When imbalanced the anxiety will disrupt the whole body-mind system, making falling asleep extremely difficult and waking up throughout the night very likely.

Ironically I have slept Quadrupedal my entire life and never knew about this. I was born with scoliosis, I couldn't sleep on my side, back, or stomach. But I found that sleeping on my stomach, turning my hip to pull my legs up on my side and sleeping on my arms to keep my stomach flat. This actually alleviated my pain and I occasionally swap from left to right while I sleep. So I can honestly say, sleeping quadrapedal does help alleviate spinal pain.

2:43 when sleeping on your side, have a small pillow in between your knees. My chiropractor told me this and it’s helped a ton. Give it a try

not that it doesn't work, but for some folk like me, on the morning it would probably end up somewhere outside my room, because i feel like something is between my legs at night.

Look up gel pillows that are designed to stay cool. Also flip your pillow In the night if you get hot. I’m a sleep tech and when no amounts of fan or AC stops the patient from sweating for us to read the brainwaves, flipping the pillow and possibly putting a towel over the pillow does it.

I've done that sleeping on shins position before. At the time I was having a hard time breathing laying down normally and that was literally the only position I could find to sleep in. It is NOT comfortable AT ALL and I woke up with back pain, leg pain, and like I hadn't even really slept at all. I think the pain I was feeling was from being in that position on my knees all night. If it wasn't literally the only way I could breath I would never sleep that way. I also found sleeping sitting up in a chair helped with the breathing issue but that had a whole host of other issues. I actually recently bought an inhaler and that seems to be helping relieve the breathing problem I was having.

An addendum to the talking to your doctor bit: Make them send you to an orthopedic doc for an evaluation and not directly to physical therapy, they're likely to skip imaging and you can end up wasting precious time for long term strain injuries.

PSA: Sleeping in a hammock (no spreader bar, of course) did wonders for my back issues. I highly recommend giving one a shot if you have joint pains from sleeping. You can get one for $20, it's worth experimenting with!

Omg yes! When i was a teen and couldn't sleep well because my natural sleep schedule wanted to go to bed later and wake up later, sometimes during the summer months we'd set up the hammock and i'd go out for a 2-3 hour nap. It was always amazing (except for the sunburns)

I've stopped using a pillow completely since highschool and it feels really good. Immediately I got rid of tension from my neck and I got deeper sleep since then. I can sleep on the sides too now. I just think it will take some time to adapt, when it comes to sides, but overall it's worth it.
