    That means a lot! Thank you. Yeah game dev is no joke. You’re juggling programming, art, animation, UI, marketing, sound design, and music production all at once. I almost completely gave up a few months in, but I’m glad I didn’t

    Im 2-3 months in and also doing a Metroidvania and when i saw the Metroidvania bit with Metsys and saying you gave up i had a physical fit, IM LITERALLY AT THAT POINT RIGHT NOW. Did you give up on understanding Metsys or did you figure it out in the end?? im thinking of trying some Scene Transition managers or just doing every scene door/lvl connect by hand because i cant figure out metsys at my current level for the life of me!

  • @Gambit-YT

    I sorta figured it out, but it took a while. I got it to change scenes as you can see In the video, but not much more than that. Couldn’t get the camera to work properly with scenes that weren’t perfect squares. If I try a metroidvania again I might make my own simpler system. I’m not sure what issue you’re having, but there’s a few lines of code you need to make sure you add to your player to make it change scenes properly

    how do you guys learn coding? When I try to learn it then at the first day, I learn it for all day, the next day too. then after that I slow down, lose motivation to learn it. and forget about it

  • @Gambit-YT

    @Gambit-YT

    Good question. A lot of it is just looking up how to code what you want. Like “how to move a character in godot”. Then after a few times it’ll just stick. Play around with different values or methods you find. Learning the fundamentals of coding is very important. I would recommend being very familiar with how if statements, functions, and variables all work. For me, I suck at just sitting down and learning. I get burnt out very quickly and lose all motivation. My goal is typically to make something and then after a few times I remember how to do it.

    Smashtronaut is very impressive visually, I imagine you placed quite high for graphics, right? Wouldve been sick to see what the game wouldve been like if you did actually have 4 weeks. I definitely feel like I should've spent the last year making small games like you but instead I tried to make a big game and got punched in the throat by Unity causing me to switch to Godot. I learnt absolutely nothing from that experience so now I'm trying to make another commercial game still without having made any proper game before... I'll be fine. I thought I was lowering the scope by making it a story game instead of a roguelite but 4 months in im now realising the roguelite was so much easier, I made more progress on my roguelite in the first month of development than i have my story game in 4 months... turns out creative blocks when writing are extremely crippling, like even in isolation, you cant force progress whereas I could do that for programming. Anyway, I'm rambling, keep up the great work

    Thanks for the kind words! Surprisingly the artistic style was its lowest rating at 3/5 stars. The problem I had (and still have) when making something is that I'm such a perfectionist that I'll never finish anything because I'm not happy with it. I would've never released smashtronaut like it is if I wasn't in a game jam. But from quitting so many projects I learned pretty quickly on what makes a game look/feel good. I'm sure you've learned a lot during your time developing too. You probably have a much better grasp than me when it comes to larger scale systems like inventories or dialogue. Right now I'm beating my head against the wall because of a very bad oversight when I made my inventory system, so now I think ill have to restart it from scratch. Don't beat yourself up over that stuff, you've learned a lot more than you might think. Best of luck to you! If you want a challenge to finish something, give yourself 3 weeks and release it on itchio. It might not be perfect, but there's a lot you can learn and it's very motivating to say you finished something

    @@Gambit-YTIt's so weird, everybody tells me that... "Don't beat yourself up" but I don't see it that way personally. I did try to make massive systems, made a sick bullet hell one and a configurable weapon system so i could essentially create any weapon i wanted in under a minute and add it to my game. Looking back I should've taken a more modular route, this was a beefy script but aye it served it's purpose of being quick to implement new weapons. That's rookie stuff though, I've spent most my time designing my games as that's my favourite part. As for dialogue, now that im using Godot, ive decided im gonna use a plugin called Dialogic, im yet to actually test it but it looks quite promising, definitely check it out yourself, you will have to download it from the web and import it though, idk why it isn't in the assetlib, im hoping this means I'll never need to make my own, we'll see how it scales first and how customisable it is. I haven't gotten to make an inventory yet, i am dreading it, arrays/dictionaries are still a bit much for my pea-sized brain hehe. Also no way Smashtronaut on scored 3/5 on the visuals ??? That's crazy, you must've been going up with some really impressive artists in that case. Well anyway, placement doesn't determine it's value, it looks awesome no matter what!

    @@Gambit-YT Hi, im an unity developer so im don't really know. But back when i did research to choose which game engine, godot documentation and backend feature was kinda limited( ya know multiplayer, cloud data ....), so i end up with unity. Also your journey is kinda different than mine🥰, i just focusing on 1 game for nearly an entire year. So it super cool to see from other perspective haha
