THE PLACES WE VISITED 😃
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Get to Segovia by train in under 30 minutes from Madrid. Get your tickets at renfe.com or thetrainline.com.
Start at the Aqueduct (goo.gl/maps/qViX1XDHgA6H3ovF9) and then head up to the lookout (goo.gl/maps/sj4izFZ2r4xSqM5t7).
Then head down Calle del Obispo Gandasegui (goo.gl/maps/nN6PKLoyUo95nNYy5) towards the Casa de los Picos (goo.gl/maps/ybjMgFdBc7D7qLzdA).
Then head up the street to the Palacio de Cascales (goo.gl/maps/urEkw75VNTeCSumu8) to check out the esgrafiado façade.
Then head up to the Plaza de Medina del Campo (goo.gl/maps/7oMghQr4rKGdyj246).
Keep heading up the street to find the Corpus Christi church (Old Synagogue) (wrongly marked at goo.gl/maps/5YpsKy85CkjnKiP78 -- it's opposite), and then enter the Jewish Quarter. The Centro Didáctico de la Judería de Segovia (g.page/CentroDidacticodelaJud...) is very interesting and worth checking out.
You can explore the Jewish Quarter, then head up to the Cathedral (goo.gl/maps/1MgBdzgbeN57KZ8r8). The visit to the tower is timed, so you'll need a ticket for that.
Next you'll head to the Alcázar. From the Plaza Mayor, find Calle Velarde (goo.gl/maps/TJaTJqmtR2BpnfTc7) --- a more low-key route to the castle.
Then the Alcázar is here: g.page/AlcazarSegovia?share
El Sitio for tapas: goo.gl/maps/SiuQbWS6HbRFsdej6
José María for suckling pig: g.page/rtejosemaria?share
For your walk, there are a number of routes down to the Paseo del Valle del Arroyo Clamores (goo.gl/maps/zFVqQH5YYDXzicK97) but I went down Calle Puerta del Sol (goo.gl/maps/B5nAXeN52uCw52QJ8), then down the stairs over the road, and once you get to the bottom you turn right and walk with the city on your right.
The Jewish cemetery is here: goo.gl/maps/uRUAbCunxXeJ5tDS9
The Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos (with the great views) is here: goo.gl/maps/59nbuVxyyuan8hky6

I paid a visit for a day and basically saw the same places. Very nice recogniction factor in this vid for me :) The thing is, all the places you saw are must visits, so I guess for more exclusive Segovian content, one would need to stay there for a couple of days. Which would be enjoyable for sure. Beautiful city.

Next to the Pradera de San Marcos you have the beautiful Iglesia de la Fuencisla, built excavating into the stone hill. Also, el Paseo del Salón, and crossing the aqueduct, the polemic Devil statue they installed some years ago.

I spent a month in Segovia as part of a 6-week trip with a homestay and as part of a group from the U.S. I was 19 years old. A fabulous city and part of my journey toward being the interpreter I am now....and I am now a grandma! I loved my time in Segovia and will return there some day. I lived with a woman named Pilar Berdejo. I wonder what happened to her...we lost touch. That aqueducto is something. We used to lie in our beds in the dark and Pilar would tell me the legends of the region, which I still remember. And I remember the alleged Iglesia de La Vera Cruz en las afueras de Segovia. Thanks for bringing back all of those memories!

As a relative of those Spanish Jewish people, I feel so connected with this video James, last year got my Spanish citizenship because of my Sephardic ancestry. I imagine my relatives living in those beautiful streets and suddenly they have to leave everything they had to save their lives. As always in life, there are some challenges and sometimes happy moments. I went to visit Segovia last year and it was awesome.

In 2004, as part of my study abroad program, we had to arrive 2 weeks before the semester started to learn about the art, architecture, and history of Madrid. We also had to take side trips from Madrid, and Segovia was one of those side trips. We had a good tour in the freezing cold. It was snowing, I think. In 2018, I wanted to show Segovia to my husband, and we bought an Avila - Segovia package from Madrid. We had a horrible guide! He didn´t tell us much, we think he invented facts, and just kept repeating to leave him a good review on Trip Advisor. We actually bonded with a few fellow tourists over how bad our guide was and started hanging out with them in Madrid over the course of that week. After seeing your video, I am dragging my husband back to Segovia, and we are going to do it right! We are going to have a "Spain Revealed" day and copy your suggestions and actually understand what we are looking at. We will even hire your guide. And good to know that "little boy" armor exists. I am only 5 feet tall and 100 lbs, but I want to hike the Castilla La Mancha portion of the Camino (the part I skipped last summer) dressed in full body armor because I am almost finished reading Don Quijote and finishing a 945-page book requires some sort of epic celebration. Plus, I think my tribute to Don Quijote will make the Spaniards on the Camino laugh.

Gran video James. Gracias!!!

    3. CASA MUSEU DE ANTONIO MACHADO The revered Spanish poet Antonio Machado lived in this house-museum for 13 years (1919-1932). It was the hostel where the poet stayed during his time as a teacher in Segovia. It houses an exhibition on his professional career. The garden houses a reproduction of a bust Emiliano Barral sculpted of the poet in 1920. There is also a ceramic panel by Julián López Parras. The house is filled with mementos of the poet, including much of his furniture and other decorative and pictorial elements from his life

Excellent video which captures Segovia very well. Was there for three days myself and ate at that very same restaurant where the service was fantastic. We were treated like important guests. There for just a day, you did miss the following, well worth a visit: 1. THE CHURCH OF VERA CRUZ It was founded by the Knights Templar in the 13th century, and is a singular church in the Romanesque style with a floor plan in the shape of a 12-sided polygon. It has three semicircular chapels and two doorways with archivolts on columns. The church takes its inspiration from the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the origin of the Templar Order. On a hill outside the city walls reached via the descending steps featured in your video. 2. ESTABAN VINCENTE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART. Vincente was born on Jan. 20, 1903, in Turegano, a small town in Segovia, Spain. His father, a military officer and amateur painter, soon resigned his commission and moved his family to Madrid so that his six children could grow up in the capital. After moving to the US became famous member of the American Abstract Expressionist movement and is widely exhibited. Died 2001,Bridgehamption, New York, at the age of 97. 3.The revered Spanish poet Antonio Machado lived in this house-museum for

Hey Nancy, if you’re a wine lover, be sure to stop by Restaurante Maracaibo. It’s located directly across the street from the bus station. I used to work there as a cook, and the owner Oscar Hernando is an amazing sommelier who also produces his own wines, which you can taste there. He always has a great selection if wines by the glass and great tapas on offers at the bar. The restaurant in the back is on the higher end and more expensive, but the bar is great. Hope you have a chance to stop by…enjoy!

Hey Nancy, one more tip. If you’re in Segovia, I imagine you’ll stop by the nearby village La Granja de San Ildefonso. If you do, be sure to make a reservation at La Fundición restaurant. It is the best restaurant in the area that should cost waaaaay more than it does. The head chef, Anibal Herrero, is doing great twists on traditional, local dishes. So worth a visit!

It's an easy to get there, and great walking around day trip from Madrid. Of course the typical meal is crawfish first and roasted piglet afterwards, depends on what time of year, if order heavier as a first dish, like the big white beans dish. Judiones de La Granja. Those are also exclusively of the area. The gimmick is to be able to quarter cut the tender roasted piglet with a plate and serve. It's a multiple ancient cultural center type of small city. It's a great place to live too. Very unique, beautiful, and lots of interesting shops. Absolutely drenched in history. The roasted suckling pig is amazing. Can't get that done like that anywhere else in the world. There's different towns about an hour from Madrid, in every direction, and they're all worth a visit. Enchanting and quaintly. Seem like would be all alike because can seem medieval, but they're not. I definitely recommend staying in "paradores nacionales". They're a government organized network of hotels, usually in old castles and monasteries, that's obvious to see, with a few contemporary, (but few), always good food typical of wherever are located in Spain. Portugal has similar called "pousadas." Oddly enough the one in Segovia is contemporary, and outskirts, so not unless want more children oriented A rare one with a swimming pool. VERY nice and comfortable, cozy, have a special feel to them all, and reasonably priced, but don't expect 24 hr room service for food. Tend to be the authentic rustic countryside style, and good quality. They're good places even to veer off a bit, to stop to eat. It's hard to not eat well in Spain, but bad places do exist, so make sure to get authentic local recommendations.

My mom is from Segovia, I spent all my summers there as a kid and lived two blocks away from the aqueduct for over 4 years as an adult. You nailed it. Especially with El Sitio. It's literally in the name, it is the place .(I prefer the roasted lamb, and Maribel does an obnoxiously good job if you're looking for something more affordable than Jose Maria. But there is no beating Jose Maria if you're willing to pay the extra coin) I'd also highly recommend taking the guided tour of the cathedral's bell tower. There are 5 tours a day and normally run 45 minutes. They offer some of the best views of the town and is totally worth the extra 7 euros.

Something always draws me back to Segovia. I was first there briefly in about 1974, then in 2006-ish, and a couple of years ago. I love sitting on the plaza mayor and winding through the old Jewish quarter, but it's always been just a brief day-trip stop. Now you've given me new things I want to see and maybe do an overnight to take in more of the area. Great video guys! Lucia is really growing-love the hair!

Beautiful job on the video, James. A wonderful representation of the city and all that it has to offer. So much better than a day trip, if people could fit it in, would be an overnight stay. It is so nice to have time to walk and wander, getting to know the smaller streets and hidden places. The last time I was there, I stayed a couple of nights in a hotel right in Plaza Mayor; my window looked out onto the plaza with a great view of the cathedral. It felt like I was centrally located among all of the great things you pointed out. Thanks for helping me revisit all these beautiful spots!

My only regret in my life will be that I did not discover you sooner in my life. It was because of you and Yoli that I was excited about going to Tenerife and Andalucia in Sep 2019. I must have viewed whatever videos you had and viewed them day and night. I learned so much. I watch them over and over. Thank you. I had a great experience meeting my family in Spain. I can't wait to return.

Hi James, Yoli and Lucia, Great video of Segovia and great to see you all looking so well. You did a great job of showing us the best parts of Segovia. I also think you made the right choice for the best cochinillo. Casa Candida is fantastic and has been visited by thousands of very famous people from all over the world but it's a little more touristy than Meson Jose Maria. A nice place to visit on the right day is the town market which is held up by the Catedral in the plaza mayor. There's also a great gin bar up there. Segovia is like being in a time warp. I love it. Looking forward to your next video.

I loved Segovia. It's so dense in history and sites. I'm surprised that there are no documentaries or coverage of the Zuloaga family lineage. They have a museum in their honor, but no coverage on the fact that Juan Daniel Zuloaga still has a living/breathing pottery studio. He carries on the family trade/art. I believe he's the 5th generation potter. He was the highlight of my visit to Segovia.

A great guide for visiting Segovia. The aqueduct is spectacular and as you said in today's live stream, it's hard to believe that traffic was permitted to go through until 1992, instead of going all out to keep it as perfect as possible forever.

Awesome! We enjoyed Segovia in June 2007 when they had an art show at the bottom of the aqueduct. The medieval home at the foot of the aqueduct is a restaurant that serves the traditional roasted pig and potatoes dinner, it was amazing to sit amongst the historic treasures. You showed the best parts, gracias!
