Shikaku (Shikamaru's father) is one of the few parents in the series who never thought/doctrine his child to stay away from Naruto. So you're mentioning the best father figure on him is completely right. Also, he'll be one of the most important strategist of the shinobi's world later.

It's a very good ep, but my personal fav is the episode titled "I am in hell"... Bro that episode will always be in my heart... I don't generally remember episode titles of any anime, but that episode sticks with me to this day...

SPOILER ALERT: Yeah Mate, I think Naruto really catches Grief and Loss quite well for a 90s Shonen. I lost my Father around the same time Jiraya died in the Anime and the conveyed Feelings, Conversations and Music in the Show really resonated with me and kinda helped me "deal", while I couldn't really compute the Situation in real Life with my shitty and hateful Family xD I read the Manga back then and knew when the Moment was gonna come in the Anime; but the mental Preparation for it, the Voice Acting in the Moment and the overall presentation of Grief, Anger and also Positivity/Optimism (!) in actual Animation really supported me and unironically helped me get through it as a Teenager back then haha :D I'll remember that Day and Moments like Asuma, Neji, Obito, Madara and many more for the rest of my Life and many of those Episodes resonate quite well with the Losses I've experienced over the years...I still regularly come back to some of those sad Naruro OST's as well, because I cried for "Sadness and Sorrow" 20 years ago and I still feel it to this day :) I also frequently visit my Father's Grave and smoke a Cigarette/Joint there in his Memory (he was quite the Smoker/Stoner himself), always imagining him lighting it for me Asuma Style haha

​@ItachiEspada I'm sorry for you're loss, I Lost my father a year ago and he was the same age as jiraiya too, I'm a teenager and I had just turned 15 when he passed away and I felt weird and my 1st thought was: "So who's going to take me to the hospital if something happens" But Seeing my family Fight over his belongings, his credit card, his car's, Really put things into perspective of people's character and Death, What made me bitter was the thought of people fighting over a dead person's belongings and how they didn't stop to think about the situation and take time to mourn.

Ep 82 aired Oct 30, 2008 yet still stands as one of the greatest directed eps in anime. This series truly was ahead of its time🔥

The best thing about naruto is that the character building is top notch to a point where you kinda remember every character with their names and backstory in the end which doesn't happen as often with other animes.

I agree with you for OG Naruto, but IMO, Shippuden put such a big focus on Naruto, Sasuke, Shikamaru, Kakashi and Itachi (others have their moments but these 3 get the most spotlight I think) that the others are very forgettable if you didn't see OG Naruto. Best example I can think of is Lee. Like imagine if I told you during the Lee vs Gaara fight that Rock Lee only has 1 other good moment in the rest of the series, I don't think you would have believed me. I love Naruto with all of my heart, but the care for the side characters (in Shippuden only) is probably the biggest flaw I can give this series.

@@IronJawsQC Cap, if you really think about, Naruto has far more focus and development of side characters than most other anime. The weird thing is, the reason people complain about the side characters “not getting development or enough focus” in the first place is actually BECAUSE the series made you actually take notice and care about them. Think about MHA. No one gives a fuck about half of the class of Deku so its lack of focus on side characters aren’t complained about much. Meanwhile in Naruto it makes us care about Neji, Guy, Lee etc. so people get butthurt when they’re not the focus for the entire series.

Asuma was Kakashi's close friend and former academy classmate. So he wanted revenge as well and understood what Shikamaru was thinking.

When they’re playing shogi. Shikaku: “I’ll pick up your pieces” Nick: “This is art!” Beautifully said.

Tsunade has always been one of my favorite characters. The fact that the members of Team Ten were on her mind enough after they lost their sensei for her to be there to stop them from basically deserting (which is a very serious crime) but really just didn’t want them to go get themselves killed needlessly shows how much she cares for the village and the shinobi under her. The Will of Fire is strong in her

Some time ago my friend who works with me at the same company approached me and told me about one of our female coworkers. She is a mother and she asked him if he knows about this "Naruto" show. She went on and said her young daughter is totally into the show. I looked him into the eye and said to him that the Will of Fire is carried over to the next generation. Just like it went from Asuma to Shikamaru, Ino and Chouji. Some 20 years later after reading the naruto manga for the first time it makes me nostalgic.

Kakashi has lost so many friends and his entire family, but he is still there to help his students and his village

I honestly think that's what's so impressive about his character. The show is full of characters that allow their intensely tragic/painful circumstances to extinguish their hope for a bright future, turning them into villains that are easy to empathize with. This makes it all the more impressive that even though Kakashi has gone through so much pain, he still gives his all to uphold the will of fire.

This next series of episodes are going to be ABSOLUTELY FUCKING FIRE!!!!

One of the rare Naruto occasion where the anime elevated the manga Shikamaru ur the 🐐

I managed to cry 3 times in 30 minutes, damnit.

Shikamaru has such good development. He lead the team during the Sasuke rescue mission and went from a lazy kid to a leader who learned the fear of possibly leading a team to death. The only one in their year to make chunnin. Then here he fully grows up and becomes a man, learning what the king is and having the strength to stand up and move forward. Shikamaru might not be on team Naruto, but he’s subtly been having his own story develop since his introduction and I love that. It makes the Naruto world feel so big since characters outside of Naruto are having their own fully developed arcs

Ppl better not spoil anything for Nick on this show I’ll be mad

I always loved how well this was done, because in the grand scheme of things we never actually spent a lot of time getting to know asuma. The bulk of what you learn about him is right before he passes but it still hits just as hard.

In my humble opinion this episode is by FAR the best one in all of Naruto beginning to end. Just absolutely perfect. Nothing even comes close

These are some of my favorite scenes. Asuma's death has such ripple affects and the way they show Shikamaru's dad here makes me love it even more. It was the first time I'd heard a man say it's okay to cry. And him seeing the shogi board is his confimation that his son is gonna be alright. I almost cried again when Team Ten said their farewells. Such an underrated part of the show.

One of the greatest episodes in all of shippuden, it transcends just anime this was just pure art especially the shogi scene

As the one who has watched all of Naruto and Naruto Shippudden, Azuma's death was the most impactful for me. The way they directed everything around the story covering his pre and post death scene.. was just impeccable.

In manga shikamaru actually starts smoking after Asuma dies. So yeah you're not wrong he actually develops a habit of smoking.

The fact that this is a filler episode is crazy. I would never recommend anyone skipping this episode at all. It shouldn't even be counted as a filler.

@@AnixVids there's like 2, maybe 4 including backstories that have an impact, otherwise yea, they censored kishimoto into the dirt after the pain arc.

The fact that i watched that talk shikamaru's dad gave shikamaru when I was like 14 but remembered it at the death of my own father at 25 shows how much it was inspiring for our generation

I really liked how they reinforced that idea you're talking about at the end by showing a lot of the kids around the village doing peaceful things in this episode. They get to chill out because dons like Asuma fight with their lives on the line.

Dude I cried a lot with Naruto, damm how do ppl think anime are just "cartoons", this stories are so so deep and emotional when you get into it... BTW, one funny thing that I still cant get over is that Choji´s VA is the same as Renji in Bleach XD

A really good thing about Kishimoto is how he has these silent moments for everyone to absorb the situation, and then the improvement in the episode just made it into a masterpiece.

These episodes really did handle death really well, like when he died you experienced shock more then grief, then when they told everyone you experienced sadness and grief. In a way it's like the seven stages of grief playing out. It really was handle so well.

82 is one of my favorite episodes, especially when you learn who the King represents. But the shogi scene and "I'll pick up your pieces" 😭😭😭 God this show is so good!

What I realized by watching your reaction is that this show may have some characters which we may not have seen much, but only in a few episodes, they become so likeable and we start caring much more about them. Asuma and Shikamaru might be some of those characters. Can't forget that the creators did same with Rock Lee in part one. At one point he felt like a protagonist.

"I'll pick up your pieces" is such an amazing line. His dad lets him know that he'll be there for him and he has to acknowledge and deal with his recently afflicted trauma to properly move forward. This episode in particular has dialogue of a calibre that is rarely seen again in the show.

In Naruto, what comes after someone's death hits always harder than the death itself

its so sad konohamaru only family left was after the 3 hokage was this man, and he died fighting just like 3 hokage too... i feel bad for konohamaru. losing the last member of your family is a pain that truly destroy anyone.

This is still my favorite arc of the series and this is one of my favorite episodes of the entire show. A movie quality episode.

In the Manga Shikamaru actually starting smoking like Asuma, in the anime they made it just Shikamaru using Asuma's lighter.

I’ll just say I love you and you, Nick, already know why. No more words, just love and respect for you!

This is one of the best moments of the entire series. It finally starts to see the old generation starting to make way for the new , as Shikaku says “I’ll pick up your pieces.” He knows that it’s the next group’s time to show their strength and determination to the world, but he knows it will inevitably come with sacrifice and pain, which will fall on him and the rest of his generation to help heal.

Imo "I'll pick up the pieces" is a triple entendre. 1. The shogi pieces 2. Shikamaru's emotions 3. The potential death of Shikamaru, literally his body pieces Shikaku had already survived a Great Ninja War. No doubt he lost loved ones and maybe his sensei. He knows what must be done or else the life of regrets await. He knew the possibility of his son's death and yet he let him make that choice as a leaf shinobi.
