I went here back in 2006 and it was my first time in London. I was alone on a business trip and was wandering around on a Sunday after dropping my bags at the hotel. Stumbled onto this place and shyly ordered a haddock and chips and sat there happily eating my first fish and chips in London.

OK correction, Rock and Sole Plaice used to be known for using Seasame Seed Oil to cook their fish and chips. Unfortunately they were sold due to the Pandemic. The new owners chose not to continue the tradition and now are a total shadow of what they previously were. They'd cheaper out massively, their quality is nothing like what it used to be.

At 6:39 you can see the flat (20 yards away )that I used to live in 40 years ago. Back then at the start of the rise of Covent Garden as a tourist attraction (200 yards away) this was just an unremarkable chip shop mainly frequented by people local to the area, no fancy frontage or tables outside, a basic chip shop menu and take away only 😄 Food was always good, 8/10 and reasonably priced. Can't speak for how good it is today , I've not eaten there for many many years as I no longer live in the area and every time I've passed by it's swarming with tourists. Glad to see they are still thriving BUT despite their longevity I'm not sure if they are the oldest chip shop in London ?

Actually Fish and Chips is not a British tradition food and it’s got nothing to do with Britain at all. Fish and Chips was invented in 15th century in Portugal and the first person who brought up Fish and Chips in UK was a Jewish cook. It was in 1860s. Can name any famous British dish and it’s got nothing to with Britain. Everything has been brought from overseas.

What made the saveloy exceptional in this place was the fact that they'd soak the saveloys in hot water to keep them succulent. The old owner used to point this out to people whenever he got the chance. He was a grumpy so and so but when he'd start to recognise you he'd soften a little. It was one of the staple places you went for lunch when you worked around there, usually the 3/4 days after you got paid. The rest of the month you were eating out of No.1 Cafe on Earlham street.

The chips is the hardest to nail down correctly for me. I suggest just using any frozen brand fries/chips. Try to get a chip brand from Belgium! Best! And the fish is very easy to make! Just make sure your batter is SUPER cold and the beer is cold n taste good.

The chips were about the same as yours, but the gravy was watery, and the other sauces were pretty tasteless. He was quite disappointed with the whole meal. Maybe they charged him so much more was because he sat inside to eat! Your meal looked delicious and was, from the way you enjoyed it. Good for you, mate. Cheers.

When we got there it was a father and his son we asked what they served and he said fried fish with fried potates wedges. It smelled and looked so good and the taste was unique and the batter on the fish was something I had never seen before and the fries were so crispy and delicious. We went back next week and the place was gone 😢 years later I found out how fish and chips are made and remembered that place and I get emotional.

From 1954 through 1957 my family lived in England where my Dad was stationed. I was too young to remember much. My brother and sister were 8 and 5 years older than me. They as well as my parents talk about the wonderful greasy fish and chips they used to get from street vendors. Served in a cone of rolled up newspaper and very cheap....like a Shilling.

I'm northern and lived in London in '80s when no chippies had curry sauce. The best authentic Chinese chippy curry sauce is Goldfish, you can now get it in Tesco. I do remember the saveloys which were basically bright red hot dogs. The modern version seems to have removed the food dyes. Never heard of cod roe in a chippy, but jars of pickled cockles or mussels (even eggs) are a thing up North. I only ever witnessed my uncle buying them back in 1990.
