I spent a lot of years looking for a tool belt that could suit all my needs as a professional carpenter and contractor. Every model I tried had problems. But, eventually, I landed on the most perfect tool belt on the market: THE OCCIDENTAL FAT LIP + STRONGHOLD LEATHER SUSPENDERS!
This short video will explain why I think this tool belt is the best. But please remember, OCCIDENTAL IS NOT MY SPONSOR!
I just love this belt system, and have worn it for 6+ years now of heavy usage. I'm positive I can wear the Occidental Fat Lip tool belt for another two decades if need be. Here are some comparisons to other available tool belts.
LEATHER APRON TOOL BELTS:
These cheaper models are very good for a new carpenter. They're cheap and durable. BUT, I've never liked the lack of organization, and tools tend to poke you in the stomach when you bend over or kneel down.
INDIVIDUAL "PANEER" POUCHES:
These tool belt systems are far more versatile. You can hand varying pouches from a standard 3" or 4" belt to create a customized system. Tool belt pouches are worn on the hips instead of beneath your stomach. They are usually made of leather or nylon, and numerous manufacturers produce them these days. I just couldn't find good suspenders/harness for many of these models, though, and the nylon pouches were not durable enough for me.
THE GREATEST TOOL BELT ON THE MARKET: OCCIDENTAL FAT LIP + STRONGHOLD LEATHER SUSPENDERS:
Occidental Leather makes the most superior tool belts on the market. They are hand-crafted in Northern California. The Fat Lip system is, in my opinion, their greatest model. It is a blend of leather and ballistic nylon.
The Fat Lip system contains numerous loops, hooks, pouches and molded pockets to carry an extraordinary variety of tools and fasteners. I especially like the molded leather tape measure holster.
The Stronghold leather suspenders are the best tool belt harness available as far as I'm concerned. They conform to your body over time and make the Fat Lip system feel extremely comfortable most of the work day.
If you're serious about tool belt usage, I truly don't believe that there is a better system on the market than the Occidental Fat Lip System plus Stronghold Leather Suspenders. Check them out yourself!

For carpentry, I use the Occidental proframer and love it. Cannot stand the adjust to fit because I like to push my bags towards the back when in tight work settings or when the residence I am working in is worth more then I will ever earn in my life! Prevents me from knocking or scuffing doors and furniture in those situations and the adjust to fit doesn't let me push the bags towards the back. I added the hip buddies and the stronghold suspenders as well. Best setup ever for carpentry. I am 6'2" and I still find the fat lip models are too wide and long for me. I prefer the smaller length and foot print of the proframer for that as well. All leather is heavier but you get used to it rather quickly. Either way, occidental belts are not the Cadillac of tool belts... they are the Rolls Royce :). Diamond Back and Buckaroo belts are very good, some of my employees have them, but the horizontal setup of the Occidentals is much better for me (less bending sideways) then the vertical one (bending sideways is annoying) these brands offer. Btw, my occidental carpentry setup is now 26 years old and is still rocking it. I also have electrician and drywall belts with suspenders from occidental that I purchased over the years and I wear them regularly. My carpentry proframer is my go to EDC and I would not go towards any other brand. Good review.

Thank you, Brazeau! This comment is so good I'm pinning it to the top. I've really got to try the proframer sometime. But I will concede an upgrade from Cadillac to the Rolls 😁

The Honest Carpenter - also, after having had the Fat Lip, I cannot see how you would enjoy the proframer! It is smaller and less wide but unless you really wanted to live with that difference... I think you would hate me afterwards. It's like going from a Ford F-250 to a Ford Ranger. Unless there is a need for it, I don't really recommend a downgrade. But it does fit the bill for me well though... the proframer that is :)

You should look up diamondback toolbelts... Thick leather isn't the best anymore. You may also think stiletto makes the best hammers, they don't, Martinez does. It's all good, different School of thoughts. I'm just after the best of the best, not just almost the best.

Daniel Nguyen - I have tried the DB Denali rig and sold it because of the vertical setup DB has going. Plus the belt has to be worn higher because of that and I don't like that at all. Occidental also makes nylon bags which are just as good as DB for less money. I love leather, and it does last. Leather comes from a living being and Occidental uses top grain and saddle leather for their belts. Most boots don't use such high grade leather and can sell for double the price. I can't see myself spending big money on a nylon belt that reminds me of military days anymore. To each their own but I don't see any reason mentioned in your reply to substantiate your negative opinion of Occidental belts then the leather is not as good anymore. Which is false. I do own Martinez hammers... an M1 curved handle with both the smooth face and a waffled face heads and also an M4 curved handle with the dimpled face and a wide claw smooth faced head. I also have a Stiletto 15oz Tibone III hammer and a 12oz finish. Do I prefer Martinez over Stiletto? Yes only for one reason... that the handle is thinner and a 2" shorter on the M1. Other then that they are equivalent in pretty much everything else. For $300.00 the Martinez hammer head bolts have rusted and stained the handle and the paint on all the heads has chipped and degraded the appearance of the hammer heads quite a bit. To say that one is better then the other is a loose statement as each, hammer or belt, has positives and negatives that need to weighed in before purchasing. I think that these high-end products are all top notch and worthy to be considered. Then it boils down to the positives and negatives of each to make you decision. Have you tried any of these products? Good luck

Just bought my own occidental fat lip tool belt last week and while it was expensive, it is worth every penny, where i work i have to sometimes do drywall, trim work, board ups, flooring and just plain demo jobs. This belt allows me to carry almost everything i need. Huge upgrade from my 40 dollar husky carpenters tool belt. Great video!

I’ve got friends that wear them & they still look good and are functional after 23 yrs. I’m definitely getting one & I really like the set up you have, working for a general contracting construction company I do a little of everything being a foreman & I’m tired of going through 2 sometimes 3 belts a year. Thanks man Merry Christmas

I finally got myself an Occidental Framer set last year, the classic green bags, and it's awesome. Leather is great in that it forms and wears but stays strong. I was still somewhat desirous of the functionality of the more modern systems like Diamondback, and the Occidentals do feel very dated and lacking by comparison, though I do really love them, so I opted to innovate a little and improved them with some leather work. I added a bunch of loops and interior pouches and slots for all kinds of tools to make better use of the space. I stitched a bandolier-style bit holder along the inside of the fastener / square bag, along with a chisel loop and two slots for pliers and wrenches, and I'm making a clip-on adapter for torpedo level, and then for the dominant side I sort of doubled the current slots and loops to organize all of my other stuff, and it all looks like it was original to the system. I can quickly organize and add whatever tools I need for the day without just dumping random stuff in my bag that falls out while climbing around. It's now everything I could possibly need for a tool belt, it looks and operates amazingly, and I'm excited to take it through the many years of building!

I used to work construction here in Santa Rosa (Sonoma County) and Occidental Leather is fairly common for anyone who's been working for more than a year or so. I never quite built up the gumption to pick one up, sticking to a pretty strong nylon one. Having seen them up close and personal, I know that they are amazing and worth the money if you plan on working construction long-term.

Truly a king's set of bags. Used a 3" belt, pro drywall pouch,2 pouch pro fastener bag (the one with the dedicated leather molded tape holder, I like my tape on my left), the stronghold lights, and a high mount hammer holder. Used for a couple years as a drywaller (barely scratched a fraction of these set ups life expectancies) and changed professions. Def a lot nicer than a rocker needs but the quality and utility was unbeatable. If I ever go back into the trades all I'll need is a different (trade specific) tool pouch and I'd be set for anything.

I run leather Occidentals too but I run them on my fall protection harness. I keep a small 16” lanyard attached too so when I have to work off of a ladder or rebar cage I can hook in, lean back, and I’m good to go. It’s especially great when in an odd elevated position and I have to drill into concrete or something

O . G . B Woodwork - IMO, stick to one thing and post. If it is carpentry, travel, food, stick to it and post. If you like multiple subjects, open a channel for either but do not mix content. Seems monotonous but that's how YT recommends to viewers. Always keep the content and language clean an refine your style. When you're at a certain number of posts, YT will recommend. Also, in maker videos, ppl like to see how to's/reviews/opinions of the tools you use (such as this one with THC in the belt or the nifty orange ladder in your shed #3 video). And for building stuff, keep to a type... furniture is furniture, Handyman work is Handyman work, framing and building is.... well you get the picture. Most high subscriber channels have really started with a one-hit-wonder video, the one that got 1000's of views and they stuck with that recipe (content, editing, style) afterwards. Good luck and keep it monotone :) I subscribed, keep them coming. One comment, the timelapse is cool but you should mix up overlay description but talking and section your video from time lapse to regular speed to explain your progress and what you are going to do. Timelapse is cool for repetitious tasks within the video. Just a thought.

I use toughbuilt. I have the padded belt (makes a huge difference) and suspenders from my old mastercraft belt. I would like to upgrade the shoulder straps eventually, but they're broken in and fine for now. Tried the toughbuilt belt because it is very affordable, but it was money well spent and I love it. The pouches are awesome! This is where it goes off the rails! The pouches can be taken off and put on instantly with their clip system. I don't have to remove my tool harness any any point during the day. Am I working a cut station and don't need to carry the weight? *Click click* and the pouches are off and on the floor in under 2 seconds. I have a small utility pouch on me at all times that holds a knife, pencil, tape measure, chalk line and marker. I'm ready for cutting! If I need to change jobs, I have a few extra pouches that can be swapped out instantly as the job requires. I can take them off to climb trusses and squeeze between joists. If someone is getting fasteners, I can pass them my pouch for top ups. If someone is ouyr of fasteners, I can pass them my pouch. If someone needs to borrow my driver, I'll pass them my holster with a clip and they can add it to their belt without taking the belt off. Big rant, but the flexibility is so mind blowing that I still think about how lucky I am to have them 5 years later. I'll auto pilot the action, but appreciate the ability to be so flexible with my gear in retrospect.

I have both Occidental and diamondback I love them both! The only thing I don’t like about Occidental is there belt itself. Soo to fix this issue I got a Buckaroo Toolbelt.you may like Buckaroo more than Occidental because they are all leather, durable and lightweight. But, those three names( Occidental, diamondback and Buckaroo) are the crown of tool bags. It all depends on what you like but all three are made to last.

OK OK the straps of the belt make it look like my nephew needed to toss them on to wear my tool belt. But I also do like this and the vid on what your essential contents are when you wear it. That one made so much sense I tossed out a few of what I thought were commonsense and added a few of yours.

Hey Billy bob, thanks for watching. I've worked with lots of framers and roofers over the years who hung them that way. I tried it lots of times, but just couldn't get used to reaching back for fasteners--couldn't tell what was what. Works great though if you've just got gun nail racks and such back there though. Saves some money too

The Honest Carpenter yeah. I only do it when I carry 1 fastener. The bags aren’t really set up for different kinds like my framing bags. Plus they don’t hold as many tools.

Oxys are the best for sure, find the paid that works for you. I started with some Pro Framers (as a framer) blindly, but i almost wish i would have picked out a diff bag setup. Ill prob just switch/swap mine piece by piece. because overall I'm super happy with it. (with oxy stronghold suspendors)

I have a whole collection. Just sent my 15 yo leather bags in for repair...cost me $35. Replaced two small outside pockets, pinched and riveted all corners, and fixed torn stitching. Told em I lost a knee pad and they said they try to find one for me. Top notch, worth every penny

I just bought these same bags they were 377.00 , I still have to order the suspenders, and that's an additional 138.00. Then another 15.00 for the loops to slide on the belt to connect the suspenders to the belt, that's over 500 bucks now for the same bags in this video.

You should look up diamondback toolbelts... Thick leather isn't the best anymore. You may also think stiletto makes the best hammers, they don't, Martinez does. It's all good, different School of thoughts. I'm just after the best of the best, not just almost the best.

My progression... Free canvas apron from lumber yards customized with coat hanger hammer loop & riveted sleeves for my knife. Carpenter's belt (hand me down). My first rig; AWP oil tanned leather (belt, left side framer's pouch, right side hammer loop & knife sheath). The BEST bang for the buck, think Occidentals on a budget. My final rig; Occidental Framer's Belt that I'd swap pouches in & out from time to time. Occidental is undeniably the best, but I'd never kick AWP's (aka Rooster Products) oil tanned belt set-ups out of the bed. The Roosters would last me for about 5 years with regular use, but the Occidentals last forever for a set.

I have one the only problem I found with them is that I sweat so much the leather dries out I have oil them but once you oil them they Mark your clothes really bad they tend to rip right where the belt connects because it's not double layered there

I had the occidental leather Adjust to fit fatlip bags for maybe 7 years until the waist stitching tore and started to fall apart. That was the 2nd most comfortable setup i had. Most of the occidental bags are not ergonomic, especially for a right hand dominant person. Tape measure should ALWAYS be on the left side. I personally thing the B5611 and 5525 are ALMOST the perfect left side bags because tape measure AND chalk box is right there. If they had 2 smaller outter pockets instead of 1, that would make them perfect. Akribis leather bags are the most comfortable and ergonomic bags i have ever worn. Until they got stolen 🤦🏻‍♂️

I know you really like Occidental Leather tool belts. I was wondering if you have tried the Diamondback Artisan tool belt? If you have, would you consider making a video reviewing it? I really enjoy your videos, I too, enjoy a good tool belt. I have the Occidental Leather Pro Framer and really like it. I have seen RR Builders channel do a review of the Made in USA company Diamondback. Let me know what you think and keep up with the great educational videos. Thanks.

I wore occidental for 22 years . I had to retire them. 3 months ago I bought diamond back. There are things I like about the diamond backs but the comfort is just not there. They are stiff . The pockets are plentiful but too tight to fit a hand into. The tool pockets are too tight to fit tools into. I’m going to buy the occidental and add the diamond back hammer holster to it. That’s the best feature about diamond back . Occidental is the best for comfort
