I know that there are many people who criticize the RF optics system for its high price, but we must recognize that within this line there are true gems, such as this Rf35mm 1.8, the RF100-400 or the RF 15-30 (not L). I paid about 450 dollars and it is very clear and small. I also highlight the underrated RF24-240. I hope to have this RF 35mm sooner rather than later. Greetings!!!!

I think it's amazing that people are still posting reviews and raving about the 35mm 1.8 that came out with the EOS R's launch. It really is a testament to how well designed and well rounded the lens is. Not to mention that it optically competes with a lot of L glass under most circumstances. My only gripe with it is its lack of weather sealing.

@@Dustyphoto915 hell yea, absolutely! I just ordered the R8 and Im gonna use my EF 35mm f2 USM wich is sharper, less flawed (in terms of CA etc) and works just as well with like a 40 dollar Meike adapter. literally no need to buy RF lenses if there are so many great EFs out there.

You mentioned this lens so many times in your videos, always spoke very highly about it and photo examples you have shown are so epic. I just bought this lens thanks to you. Thank you so much for your work and inspiration. Your channel is one of a kind, your voice and presentation is so soothing and calm. And what is very very special about you is that you share your raw files with us. That is something almost nobody does. ( I also wanted to ask you if you would share raw files of this 35mm lens. I haven’t seen those in your files - would it be possible please? ) Another thing I saw on your website are presets. Tell us please, when will they be available? I would buy your presets in a heartbeat. I truly love your editing style. Hope the presets are coming soon. Thank you for everything.

I bought the RF 35 1.8 on sale this morning and now you have posted this video. I have been thinking for a while about which native (prime) lens to buy first. Thanks to your videos, I think the 35 is a good choice because it is so versatile (+ IS, + macro). I wanted a fast prime for low light situations (especially Christmas and indoors) to photograph my family and avoid using speedlights (even 2.8 is often too slow for the dark Christmas conditions). I hope that the DoF at f1.8 won't be too much of a problem indoors. I have an EF 50 1.8 but rarely use it. Often it is not wide enough for my style, so I stick to my EF 24-70 2.8. Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy them and your comparisons and practical examples are great.... Apart from your extremely professional videos, which are a joy to watch!

Highly utilizable lens in good light for sure. Wonderful on a gimbal, great IQ and super-light. Do wish the AF performed better in lower light, it can get indecisive and become crippling. Shot an event with it hoping for the best, but had to switch to something else, it just wasn’t committing properly and wasn’t in a position to be missing shots 😿 Sounds like 2024 will be the year of the ever-elusive RF 35 1.2/1.4, def looking forward to it.

The wider focal length, the “Macro” capabilities and the stabilization. For the price it’s a great everyday lens. The down side is its really noisy focus motor when shooting photos. It’s strange but when you shoot video it’s very quiet. I’m not sure if it’s just my lens but dang it’s loud.

I've just recently entered the world of RF mount as I I couldn't pass up the awesome price of the R50 this Black Friday. My first lens I got was the 85mm. I'm not fully sold on tbh. As you mentioned with the 35 because they're both macro, the focus is so slow. Might take it back, but I'm so torn between a few alternatives.

I already had the 14-35 for my R5, but wanted to try this. I bought it, but returned it. The CA was crazy without correction and it was quite chunky in size. It wasn’t really providing me with enough uniqueness from the zoom. A lens I do love is the 28 F2.8 STM. I put that on my R6 and have a fun walk around or BTS kit that is compact and weighs nothing. However the rumored 35 F1.2 beast has my attention!

Hey dude, thanks for your videos. Since you're one of the few who include raw pics to your videos, id like to ask do you plan to do test shots with studio lighting as well? I think many people would be interested in seeing how lenses like the 24-105 (new and old), 28-70, 24-70, etc., perform in a studio setting/lightning at apertures like 4-8. This would be valuable for those shooting clothing, products, etc. Thanks :)

Great video James. Thank you for the time and effort you put into producing content like this. I started off with the 35mm on R8 but am now moving more towards 28mm f2.8 pancake for travel, which I think I prefer due to the wider, lighter, smaller form factor. The 35mm is no doubt a great starting point but for me personally, I think the 28mm + 50mm primes suit my shooting style more. The 35mm focal length seems too generic/normal for me, if that makes sense!

Thanks James, I'm still adapting my EF 35mm 2.0 IS USM at that point, waiting for a RF 35mm L series to finally be announced. From all I read, this older EF version is at least at par with the RF 1.8 version optically, and has a better USM AF motor. It lacks the macro option, though.

I keep meaning to pick up an EF 35mm F2, not only to compare it to the RF version but see how it performs on the C70 with a speed booster. I'm thinking I would happily sacrifice the macro for a snappier AF.

  • @tom_k_d

    @tom_k_d

    6 ай бұрын

@JamesReader As far as AF goes, the EF 2.0 IS USM reacts almost instant, and it works fine in video mode, too. Also, it has T2.0, thus almost no light loss, and is fully internal focussing. I can highly recommend it, given a good used copy should cost less than €400 now - it's price at release, in 2012, was €800: while not being an L lens, it comes close in terms of build quality and optics. The EF 35 1.4LII of course is even better, but it's still quite expensive even in used condition, and it lacks IS plus the compact form factor.

Do you think the nifty fifty makes sense for me in addition to the 35mm? Or would an 85mm f:2 or even a 70-200 f/4 be a better option (the latter one giving more flexibility for other uses too)? @@JamesReaderI also face this choice. They say Sigma Art has a better design and the resulting picture is more cinematic. Is it worth it or is it better to take a lighter and more compact RF? I'm going to use it outdoors and can't figure it out. Everyone has their own opinion

I do wish they update the 50 mm nifty fifty lens with the image stabilization. And make 40 mm version as well. I love 40 mm focal. But since there isn't a native one - this 35 mm is currently my favorite one for R8.

What do you shoot? If mainly portraits I would go for the 35mm 1.8. If you shoot a lot of video, travel, landscapes etc then go for the 14-35. That's an amazing lens.

I have thls lens. The few downsides are: - Slow focusing (at least on my EOS RP) - Has a hard time focusing at all in very low light - No weather sealing I wish they'd make an L-lens version of this with these 3 things fixed/improved and I'd gladly pay 2-3x more for it.

For travel and video maybe go for the zoom, for portraits I would pick up the two RF lenses if they are focal lengths you like. I might avoid the EF Canon 24 1.4 in favour of the Sigma 24mm 1.4 or better yet the Sigma 28mm 1.4 if you don’t mind that focal length.

Nice but my vote is still for the 50. It's half the price of the 35 and much more suited for portraits as 35 is not considered to be a portrait lens by most. I would even buy the 85 before considering the 35 for portrait work. My 2 cents as a professional portrait photographer for 20 years.
