This is the easiest way I know how to clean silver and left me time to clean my self cleaning oven
It was time! I had to clean some silver and I thought I would share the easiest way I know how to clean silver quickly. It makes this household chore so much easier and somewhat enjoyable. I pulled out some of my Godinger silver and my Gorham silver to clean along with a few other silver items, and I created a really quick youtube video on cleaning my self cleaning oven, which is a GE Monogram gas range.

    My mother used to clean some of her larger pieces with boiling water and spic and span powder in an aluminum roaster. Silverware we use to sit for hours cleaning. I have found that if used on a regular basis it doesn't need as much cleaning. Thanks for this method since spic and span powder is hard to find. Would love a best of book. Have a great week!

    I have read that tarnish is more the loss of silver ions as they are very chemically unstable in oxygen. I gave my daughter several silver items in a large plastic bin with a lid. Three years later the silver is in perfect condition. Perhaps because the silver ions are happy and stable in a low oxygen environment.

    I love polishing silver !! My 96 yr young mother has terrible arthritis in her hands and l used to volunteer to polish all of her silver for her... (my ADHD soul finds it very relaxing). Her flatware is 1940 s so everything has to be done by hand. My Reed and Barton is 1981 so l just put it in the dishwasher. The problem l have on some Sterling serving pieces are little black spots. My mother used to keep plants in one and it’s got a few of these pits . Years ago there was a silversmith in Chatham, NJ that could repair and rebuild anything, sadly he is long gone. Thank you for sharing. It was fun to watch .

    Hi Linda, I use this method on my sterling flatware as I use it every day. So much easier than polishing all those pieces. For my hollow ware I use Hagarty’s silver wash. Does a great job. FWI, I put my sterling forks and spoons in my dishwasher. Not the knives as the handles are glued. Just make sure the sterling is in a basket separate from any stainless steel. Thanks for sharing.

    Bonjour Linda, I did try this method years ago and although it works I quickly turned back to my fantastic product that I buy at Birks Store.(high end jewelry store and fine silver). It is a red paste that I apply with a damp sponge that comes with the product : no smell, no mess, perfect result. Perhaps I am a little lazy and I dont want to spend a loot of time boiling water, changing the water and foil, etc. !! Anyway, it was fun to watch this video.

    You’ll like this we have a Viking electric stove with a self cleaning oven. Every year or so years I would have to call the repair guy because either one of the burner elements would not work or the temperature in the oven stopped working or the oven cleaning cycle would not work. I remember thinking I’m never getting another Viking the repairs are expensive . Then it hit me the self cleaning cycle gets so hot 500 degrees that it would ruin something in the oven and it would have to be repaired . So I haven’t used the self cleaning cycle since the last repair person came that was three years ago. Now I clean the oven every spring by hand. No more repair person. Unbelievable!

    Not a method I would use, because it causes micro pitting to the surface. The "egg" smell is sulfur, because the tarnish is basically sulfur from air pollution and has attached to the silver. If you have ever noticed that silver tarnishes faster with bad air quality days or using a silver fork on a runny egg, that is why.

  • @jmeh2388

    @jmeh2388

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sulfur molecules are also found in many soaps, lotions, and perfumes so it’s not just the air quality. Onions and Eggs have high sulfur content. Bore water has sulfur. Also other contributors of tarnish are humidity levels and the copper that makes up a portion of sterling silver reacts with oxygen to cause a tarnish. My guess is she is ok with the micro-pitting because as she said they were not family heirlooms and less than $5.
