They were the third band to play during the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. They only did one song because they "believe(d) Freddie would have wanted it that way."

One of the best - possibly the best - reaction to this fantastic comedy because a.) You recognized so many of the actors and b.) You recognized many of the rock & roll references. The more arcane rock & roll trivia you know, the more jokes you get. Christopher Guest using the violin on the guitar? That's Jimmy Page in "The Song Remains The Same", doing this interminably long guitar solo, alone on stage, using a violin bow on his guitar at one point. The radio interference on Nigel's guitar happened to Jimi Hendrix. All the drummers who died: some bands are cursed with deaths (The Grateful Dead, for instance, had four of their keyboardists die before their time was due), and there were always drug overdoses, plane crashes, suicides, and other "bizarre" deaths (a couple of elecetrocutions, for instance). And often, in the overdoses, the news reports would always mention "choked on his own vomit". Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, John Bonham, etc. You always saw that, hence the inclusion of that term in this movie. The only person I didn't see you recognize was Angelica Huston! But maybe that just didn't make the edit. GREAT REACTION!!! So happy I'm subscribed!! They should put this reaction on the DVD! (The DVD actually has an entire commentary track WITH THEM, AS SPINAL TAP!. In fact, they have ALWAYS appeared on talk shows, all throughout the years, if you just do a You Tube search. I also have a four hour rough cut of the movie, with tons more material, all of it hilarious. (Alot of that stuff is now on the DVD and I think many of those scenes are here on You Tube as well). PS: The concert scenes were mostly them actually playing live, not lip synched, which makes all the difference.

There was actually a reunions special done about 10 years after this as a TV movie. It shows what they were all up to since the making of the film. I loved it because David Saint Hubbins apparently took a job working in my hometown working in the same department as my mother.

Since you enjoyed this AND Best in Show, you should check out A Mighty Wind. It is a similar style, but it deals with folk music, and it follows three bands. The Spinal Tap trio returns, but as different characters. Catherine O'Hara also returns - along with Eugene Levy. In Spinal Tap, the characters are actually doing the singing, and they are also playing their instruments. This continues in A Mighty Wind. Aside from "Big Bottom", a lot of the songs in Spinal Tap are parody sound bytes, that are mostly there as accents to the story. In a Mighty Wind, a lot of the songs are more complete, (on screen) and some of them are quite good. Of course both films also have sound tracks, with complete songs on them. The DVD also has bonus tracks, that have everyone performing their complete repertoire as bands, in a simulated version of the [complete] final show that they all participated in.

i think i read somewhere that there are literally no other bits of film that were useable as they could barely keep from laughing at every line (which i assume were usually improvised). watching the film with your eyes on whoever is not doing the talking is very telling.

So many of the "bits" from this movie are taken directly from the biographies of bands like The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, KISS, and many more. Funny enough, when I was a teenager, before I had ever seen this movie, I saw Night Ranger at a minor amusement park (I think it was Adventureland near Des Moines, Iowa). They weren't billed after a Puppet Show, and there wasn't any exploratory jazz improvisation, but I definitely remember that it seemed like a desperate venue for an '80s metal / power ballad band. Luckily, I had another opportunity to see Night Ranger a few years later playing at the Iowa Jam (also near Des Moines, Iowa). The open-air concert was held at the Iowa State Fair grounds and included Ozzy Osbourne (Jake E. Lee on guitar), Motley Crue, Ted Nugent, Accept, and Night Ranger. That was my first real concert experience and it set a high standard as far as my expectation for other concerts I would eventually attend throughout my college years and adulthood.

I saw the remains of the band Chicago at an amusement park in the very early '90s. A comedian was their opening act. As for Night Ranger, I worked in a casino for several years (not in Las Vegas or Atlantic City). Maybe 7 or 8 years ago, I was dealing blackjack near the club located inside our casino, which also served as a live concert venue. The cover band playing that night was doing a Night Ranger set, and I remember being impressed at how authentic it sounded...when I got my next break I wandered over and peeked inside, and it was actually Night Ranger playing. 😂

4:25 On the Criterion Edition DVD commentary track (apparently it's different from the standard edition where they are doing it in character) Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer are talking all this behind-the-scenes stuff, and during this part they described what they were going for in the songwriting as "true mediocrity". (Incidentally, you might be amazed at the number of local bands who do cover versions of 'Big Bottom'...)

I saw Spinal Tap on tour in 1992 or so, 2nd row center and I've seen this film maybe 250 times lol Oh, and Sweeney Todd was first, it premiered on Broadway in 1979, so "Saucy Jack" would be an homage to Sondheim, not the other way around! :) Glad you enjoyed!
