I think scarves and head coverings for the purpose of keeping someone warm are inherently genderless, but marketing it as a hijab for men to be worn for religious purposes seems insensitive.

YES. Exactly this. Head coverings are fabric. Scarves are fabric. Fabric itself is genderless. If this were being marketed as unisex and for use by hijabis as separate things, it would be a different situation altogether. As is, this is incredibly respectful to a religion that values gender differences and sacrifice for their modesty.

Agreed hijabs are used to oppress women and not men. A man would never wear that because he doesn't have to. If a woman doesn't want to wear hers then it's tough luck because a man will step in very quickly and punish her severely.

Thank you for having the right words to say this, because I, as a non Muslim woman, wrap my head and neck in scarves to go on a walk in the cold, and when I saw this I sorta went 'a ski mask is a problem?' but this is a time where context means everything.

While covering the head is a unisex practice, as in both men and women do it in many cultures for many reasons, a hijab is not. Hijab is a particular way of covering the head that is Islamicly prescribed for WOMEN for a man to cover his head in the manor of hijab would be him dressing as a woman which is forbidden in Islam. I am a non Muslim who has no problems with cross dressing and drag but even I would be a little uncomfortable if I saw a man wearing a hijab because I know that it is a huge no no in islam

I totally agree with you. Taking something that is sacred to a religion and tarnishing it like that is so disrespectful. I’m a Christian, but I stand by a woman’s right to wear hijab if she so pleases. So many laws around the world have tried to take a Muslim woman’s covering and the LAST thing you guys need is men trying to share in it with you. I even read through some online articles and nobody is even trying to combat this?? People are literally making jokes about “robbers and hijackers” now being able to commit crime “in style.” It’s disgusting

This actually made me 😢 for the love of our religion as a whole and the sadness in that people are so downtrodden, that they don’t have limitations, they have no heart and no consideration for others. We of course don’t need all of that from them, but the sadness is more for the state of people hearts. They’re so lost and have no morals that they don’t know what it means to respect another’s belief. And if they’re muslim saying or doing that, even worse. The ignorance is futile though, they won’t get very far.

It will be a fine day when we cant tell what religion, if any, a woman is representing, based on the scarf shes wearing. Just like in the 1950's! I do wear it publicly, but not before I went out of my way to learn how to wrap it properly. Colors coordinating best with, say, Carhartts, a flannel shirt and snow boots. Good Hijab matters! Those synthetic chiffons (with underscarf to protect your hair, of course!) really take the punishment of a long days work in the yard and around the house! I put them in a delicates bag and in the washer/dryer they go! I save the pashmina and the more colorful scarfs for when I'm not working so hard, just going to the supermarket or hardware store. Here's a hack for those slick fabrics!: Instead of trying to tie a knot in the scarf, I use thick ponytail elastic instead. It's easier on the fabric, on me, and its adjustable and never comes undone! I have enough hair to tie into a bun, and I add a satin scrunchie to that. I anchor the whole mess to that bun, by pinning through the fabric and into the scrunchie material with a decorative safety pin. Just that one pin keeps it on my head all day! I say, as a woman, let's wear it proudly, and maybe, people wont make such a big deal out of a scarf. Not stare so much. I think our muslimah sisters would appreciate that. It does get old.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything. I tolerate and respect everyone, as long as they tolerate others. Of course, this also counts for any religious person. At this point one has to remark, that there is a huge difference between one or more followers of a religion and the religion itself, meaning the ideology/ a construct of believes. I also am all for women support women, which is another factor to why I had to say something to this. Because I don't like, how the majority of comments supports, what is said in the video. The Islam oppresses women and even tells them how to dress (other religions do that to, beside the fact, that the whole society is misogynistic. But as there are countries with the sharia, where the oppression of women is basically integrated into the law and the Islam as a religion is emotionally important to people, it is way easier to create internalized misogyny (!) and a way bigger problem.) Also, women have to cover up to not reveal their bodies to men, which makes them sexual objects and justifies when men become invasive of women. Not only that, even young girls are told to cover up, which I personally find disgusting. So I think we should encourage women and young girls to wear what they want without needing to please men (or hiding from them; on the contrary we need to educate men!) and to do what makes them happy, independent from men. Also, every girl and woman should know how worthy they are and that they are not only there to clean or for sexual attraction or anything.

Some bodies are inter-sexed at birth with organs that don’t all “match up”. And as many as 1 in ever 1000 people are trans or non-binary. So their gender identity doesn’t match their bodies. Is this maybe a design that helps those people conform while still feeling comfortable? There are significant mental health concerns for trans, inter-sexed, and non-binary folks who are forced to conform to gender norms that don’t fit them. Does Islam have teachings on this?

Look, I don't know if you don't understand the hijab or not but this is an ignorant comment. Islam never forces a woman to wear the hijab, yes it's mandatory but only when the girl feels so and wants to then she can embrace it. For myself, I've never wanted to wear the hijab and my parents never got upset with me for it but recently I've embraced wearing it even if my classmates look at me funny. So was I forced? I did it to get closer to God and because I love Islam so much. You are undermining the reason behind the hijab with the fact that women still get raped, even when covering up. It's not the woman's fault for getting raped even if she covered up, God will judge and punish the man who did that to her. The reasoning behind the hijab is to show that you can submit to God, and save yourself for your husband who will cherish your beauty. It's about being modest, and perserving yourself from males unrelated to you. It is those people that force a hijab on their child who will punished, often parents mix up culture with religion and it harms the child's way of thinking. And you know what happens next? They blame Islam for it. In the end, Allah knows best and I hope you realise one day that the hijab isn't oppressive but instead a beautiful symbol for us women.

I agree with you. But the actual problem is that this guy introduced it as a ‘unisex hijab’. As Ninja Mommy said, hijab is specifically for women. So you can't make one for both men and women. Men can cover their hair if they want. There are special caps worn by Muslim men. They can use it if they want. Edit: This is to make my opinion more clear. If a muslim man wants to cover his head, there are caps, hats, hoodies and so on. But they can't use a head scarf that women uses as a hijab. It is haram, because man can't dress like a woman and vise versa in Islam.

In Islam, the hijab is a sacred piece of clothing meant to preserve a woman’s modesty. It has deep religious, cultural, and personal meaning for Muslims. Modesty for men is different, with different pieces being used, and is practiced differently. Taking a hijab and making it unisex strips the meaning from it-which is why it’s offensive and wrong. It’s like if someone who isn’t Jewish says that women should wear yarmulke as well as men; it’s ignoring the culture and belief that makes it meaningful. If it was a non religious piece of clothing, then yes, do whatever you want. But religious clothing and practices are sacred and meaningful, and should be practiced with care and respect.

I don't think that someone who wants to dress modestly and uses a headscarf for this purpose is the same as a guy making fun of the women and dress like them, I believe the intention is what matters. Instead of bragging from our freedom society just go where you wish people to go and come back to tell us the tale (if you can).

I don't know about this one. I hear so many muslim creators saying the head scarf part of the hijab is just fabric and that anyone can wear a scarf. While the concept of hijab is totally different and it is more to do with modesty, values, and respect for Allah. If he's just putting a scarf on his head, anyone can do that. It's just a piece of cloth. If he is claiming that he is doing it for Allah that is where it becomes problematic.

Idk, some said pants were men's clothing, heels were men's clothing briefs were men's clothing, etc BUT men in islam have their own headdresses already. Wear those instead

I kinda get your point but it's a bit hypocritical. Y'all are saying "if a woman want to wear a hijab, let her wear it. It's not your business what someone wears" But if a man (or another gender) wants to wear it it's disrespectful. My grandmother is Muslim, I grew up with this. But I can't imagine someone takes their religion so seriously that it offends you when someone does something differently or wrong. I mean, a headscarf is not specifically owned by one religion, literally every religion does this in one Form or another. Apply your "let everyone wear what they want" consequently because it is literally not your business nor does it hurt you physically when someone does it

can’t believe you’re caping for this ridiculousness. if I were your grandma I’d be disappointed. my family has been Muslim for many years and I’m smart enough to know this doesn’t cut it. everyone wants to make things a trend or whatever but religion should in no way shape or form be taken as one it’s pathetic. I’m scared to see what is to come of us.

With all the respect, but Isn’t keffiyeh (kufiya) a head scarf? Seems like in Islamic communities male head scarfs are quite common. Does it really matter that much how to call it? Or is it same like in india if you wear a sari and open your belly you are a modest goddess and if you wear a crop top and open same amount of belly you are automatically turning into a concubine of devil?

Atheist here but from the info I have gathered, in Islam it matters more of the gender you were assigned at birth. A trans man was born a biological woman so "still" a woman technically and could wear it. Something like that, have a blessed day.

As someone who is non-binary but femme presenting and chooses to wear the hijab for this reason. Sometimes I'm confused by the gendered aspect of Islam and other times I understand it. The hijab specifically, although men do have their own variation of it, the actual head covering itself shouldn't be available to all. I've seen Muslim men wearing the hijab in solidarity with Muslims Women and the act itself is pretty performative and infuriating, they're doing nothing by wearing it except exploiting the hijab to gain brownie points and Internet clout instead of working towards real change within our communities. Plus, it looks really stupid.

I disagree head coverings are not strictly Muslim or female only, that is just one style of them are only cowboys allowed to wear cowboy hats. It is just another hat an inanimate object and at the end of the day what is more important is your bond to it to you and theirs to them.
