IN DEPTH Detail of REGEN - 3.0 Duramax Diesel - exhaust regeneration

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I recorded a full regen in my truck and discussed the temperatures and what i noticed during this process. In short, Regen is for regeneration where the exhaust collects diesel soot particles and then performs a full burn to rid them from the exhaust. This will take place approximately once per full tank of fuel.

    Good demo and explanation for those new to the 3.0. I left for a trip at 74 regen load, happened to be towing a small enclosed trailer and watched the regen number go down as the engine was working more with the trailer. Believe EGT 3 was around 7-750 couple hundred degrees above what I normally run. Number dropped to 54 then gradually rose to 100

    Takes my 2021 3500 about 50-70 km and about 30-45 minutes on the highway to complete a regen cycle. The regen trigger will usually hit 100 at about 50-60% soot load on the highway and 100% SL in city driving conditions. The fact that I can use the banks to manually regen on the highway has been a game changer. If I’m around 75% or more I’ll trigger the regen about an hour before the city, then I have a clean system to rip around town in. If I’m just city driving and I need a regen at least I’ll know when it’s due for a highway drive, but if things work out where I can’t do that it does have a stationary regen option too, but it only allows it after 90%. From what I know if this method, stationary regens are hard on the system, and some recommend an oil change after doing a stationary regen. That said I’d personally try to avoid stationary regens but it’s nice to know it’s an option that’s available if I need it.

    In my truck I limit the idle time unless it’s really cold and I want to get into a warm truck. Another thing I do is if I am idling I rev the engine about 1500rpms. Also during a Regin if I’m driving in the city I drop it down a few gears and keep the engine running at higher rpms to keep it running hotter. Not really sure if your supposed to be doing what I do but it’s the stuff I do in a big truck at work, limit idle, if idling I high idle

    As far as I know, the 3.0 Duramax has no capability of manually putting the vehicle into elevated idle. Some 6.6 Duramax pickups could do with a modification that would allow one to use the cruise control function with the transmission in Park to elevate the idle. Some Ford diesels could do it with circuit modifications that would enable optional upfitter switches to elevate the idle. My 2012 Ford Super Duty with the 6.7 Powerstroke was modified that way, and it worked well.

    If you're having excessive regens (for whatever reason), try the DPF catalyst from Pittsburgh Power. Ran some through my boss's LM2 the other day & it's worked wonders. It brings the exhaust temp needed for regen down by 300F, which would help the truck regen more passively. still need to solve the lubricity issues of ULSD elsewhere though, this has no lubricity additive in it

    I need to get a banks pod, but even without I notice in a regen the mpg drop about 2-4mpg, idle increase ~200rpm and the smell if I’m stationary. Smell is kinda bad frankly if I’m stopped with windows down, my wife says it’s a sweet burning plastic smell, yeah kinda is I guess 😂 I’m at a regen every 200-300 ish miles, still fairly new. Mixed driving but a decent part of my commute is flowing highway (~70mph) so it gets nice and hot during the drive regularly. I also usually disable start stop, cannot imagine it’s good for the engine and emissions. Best I can tell I save maybe 1mpg tops in stop n go with start/stop enabled…

    Are you sure that the fuel is injected on the exhaust stroke. I thought there was a 7th injector injecting into the DPF. Reason I'm asking is the the turbo temp is fairly low. I had a Ram 3.0 diesel and that motor did inject fuel into the last 2 cylinders and my turbo temps very high when regening. My Temps on regen on my LM2 are low like yours.

    You illustrate why modern diesel emission systems SUCK if you are doing mostly city driving. Also, during a regen, shifting the transmission into neutral or park will cause the regen to cease on most light duty diesel pickups. An actual hazard is if the DPF reaches full and it is impossible to drive to regen--I've seen that happen when, for example, a truck is stopped in blizzard conditions and driving the vehicle to conduct a regen is impossible. Ford anticipated this in diesel work trucks--with an option available in certain models for the driver to initiate a stationary regen if when the DPF level reached 100% and the vehicle can not be driven to conduct the regen. In those, the engine (with the transmission in Park) would rev to around 1700-2100 RPM and do the regen, usually taking 10-18 minutes (and a more than a gallon of fuel), but it could save being stranded somewhere with a full DPF and no way to drive it. Supposedly, this feature is built into 6.6 GM Duramax trucks, but can only be activated on trucks sold into commercial fleets. Some scan tools (will the Banks system do this, too?) will also initiate a forced stationary regen, and that is likely the only way to do it on the 3.0 Duramax. I would not buy a 2007+ MY diesel pickup if most of my driving was city/suburban driving--it's just asking for eventual (and expensive) emission system issues.

    How does Soot Load # differ from Regen Trigger # ?

  • @1randyharbin

    @1randyharbin

    5 ай бұрын

    Soot load is just the DPF soot load, the regen trigger accounts for DPF soot load and all the other factors the ECM takes into account to determine when a regen will occur, usually the regen trigger will equal or be 1-2 points above soot load, but for instance on a long road trip soot load could be reduced by passive regen but the regen trigger will still stay higher as miles and gallons of fuel used continues to increase.

  • @DemonWorks

    @DemonWorks

    5 ай бұрын

    Soot load is a measurement from the pressure sensor on how much calculated soot there is. Could go well beyond 100%. The regen % is the calculations from all of the sensors and fuel consumption with miles driven to calculate when a regen should take place.

    It is not unheard of to have some infant mortality of components in a brand new truck, usually something to do with the emissions systems with the diesels, but other things can cause problems too. The vast majority of the time there will be no "warning" from Onstar beforehand, just a CEL/MIL and sometimes a message on the DIC. For the vast majority of these issues, once fixed accurately and properly, rarely cause issues again.

    They should have an idle or "parked regen" option that is standard on these vehicles that the driver can activate in the event that the DPF is full and you are not able to continue driving . A perfect example would be you are caught in a blizzard and stranded on the side of the road. Its -20F outside and you have to keep the engine running to stay warm. Or say someone lives in NYC and does nothing but stop and go driving and short trips, but they want a diesel truck just because. I know some of the heavy duty Ford's have a "parked regen" option. With all the fancy display's on these trucks there is no reason why GM cannot incorporate this on the 3.0 duramax along with all their other diesel engine options. From the smallest of diesel cars to the large semi trucks, every modern diesel vehicle should have a "parked regen" option.

    It was probably some kind of safety reasoning. I can see someone doing a regen in a garage...

    The problem with "parked regen" at least in semi trucks is your twmps dont get as hot and you dont get a complete burn. So the more you do it the less complete you clean. Think of it as a old rechargable battery. Where every charge you get further from 100% i work for a supplier to the big 3. And my semi does not see highway use. The dpf filter needs to be replaced about every 16 months at the cost of $18,000. All we can do is a parked regen. While in a pinch like the situation you gave it would be nice. Im willing to bet a lot of people would do parked regens as the main option.

    When I am warming, I turn on my cruise and hit set and it will idle at 1200rpm

    @@DemonWorks Very possibly because of fire hazard. When I would do a stationary regen on my Ford 6.7 Powerstroke, the exhaust would burn your hand 4 feet away from the tailpipe.

    Take it out to the interstate and give it a Italian tuneup.
