These things tended to disappear during antiquity (animals increasingly replacing the humans), even if I'm talking about something like 3000 years ago, not something like in the 1500s. The Greeks practiced pharmakos, where they would chuck cripples and criminals off cliffs to appease the gods. The Celts, Iberians, and Britons extensively practiced sacrifice of war prisoners. The Germans would impale or hang sacrifices from trees, and the Norse would sacrifice their slaves when their master died. The Slavic Baltic peoples were sacrificing prisoners to their gods right up until the 14th century when they were finally Christianized.

Americans learn that the Spanish were cruel. What did the Spanish think when they saw the natives killing and sending offerings to the "pagan" Gods? The majority of the indigenous population did not die because of the cruelty of the Spaniards but because of the diseases brought by them (which was not a conscious act). The Spanish managed to conquer the Aztecs even though there were only a few hundred of them due to the fact that many tribes joined them in the fight with them because they treated them very badly.

Set in Yucatan, Mexico, in the early 16th century, Apocalypto portrays the hero's journey of a young man named Jaguar Claw, a hunter from late Mesoamerica, and his tribemates who are captured by an invading force. Following the devastation of their village, they are taken on a dangerous journey to a Mayan city for human sacrifice at a time when the Mayan civilization is in decline. The film was a box office success, grossing more than $120 million worldwide, and received mostly positive reviews, which praised Gibson's direction, Dean Semler's cinematography, and the cast's performances, although it was criticized. representation of the Mayan civilization and historical accuracy

Most cultures resulted to human sacrifice in times of desperation. With the Aztec and Mayan cultures sacrifice the human sacrifices were more common, due to their ideas of the gods. To give your life so the gods could continue to live and bless the city, was considered a massive honor for them. Children were actually seen as "gifts of the gods" and were pampered. Punishing a child was forbidden, no matter what they did. You were born, lived and died for the Gods. Consider it all as a more extreme version of Evangelism.

By not sharing direct passed down knowledge to act as if they are dealing with the gods to intervene. Now they probably didn’t know down to the minutes or hours, but with centuries of tracking they could know well enough to start the sacrifices up and then say “look the gods respond to us” when it happens. If you watch predators in the wild, they always start with the belly and organ meats - much higher in nutrition than muscle meat. And although the hunter was not happy with the pig testicles, "Prairie Oysters" are a delicacy, and are still a menu item in parts of the US and Canada - mainly areas that are known for their cattle ranches. Some criticised this as an attempt to excuse the Conquistador conquest of Mexico But it must be said that the Aztecs were so hated that the majority of Indigenous flocked to join the Spaniards as they marched against Mexico

That 'poor old man" was actually begging the sacrificial victims to save him by being sacrificed to the gods. He didnt care about the prisoners, he just cared that they could be used to save him. If you realise that, you dont feel that sorry for him. The girl's prophecy was "beware the man who brings the jaguar". That cat was that jaguar. Fun fact: theres no such thing as a 'black panther", because "panther" actually refers to a black jaguar or a black leopard. All panthers are black, but they are actually jaguars or leopards. A black leopard is a panther and so is a black jaguar. A panther isnt a type of big cat - its just a reference to a black big cat. Which is also why "Pink Panther" is funny, because its a contradiction that literally cant exist. The reasons those stairs on the old south american temples are so steep is so they could roll bodies down them. The steps werent usually used to access the top of the temple. Given how blood soaked those things are you really dont want to go walking on them, and my understanding is that its prohibited in most cases now. The aztecs and other people's sacrificed in festivals, so the numbers depended on the festival. One annual festival involved choosing a young man who was then treated as a god for a year. At the end of the year he was sacrificed and eaten. Another involved sacrificing babies. I think, from memory, one festival recorded 80,000 sacrifices (the aztecs, like the germans, were obsessive record keepers). But thats not the worst of it. Prisoners of war were forced to participate in brutal "games" performances that always ended in their death and then they were eaten. often that would happen months after capture and the prisoner would live with the family of the captor. They were often skinned after death in these "games" and the warrior who captured that prisoner was given the honour of wearing the skin until it rotted off. When the leader in this movie says he will wear Jaguar Paw's skin, he meant that literally. The problem with this movie is that Mel Gibson is actually a super-devout catholic who belongs to one of the more obscure fanatical conservative "traditional" sects of catholicism - either opus dei or worse. The spanish catholics committed terrible atrocities in south america against the natives but this movie has generally been interpreted as Gibson's way of saying the spanish catholics might have been bad in south america but the natives were worse and the catholics were an improvement. Which is, of course, a very fraught argument, because you cant justify committing horrors by pointing to others who committed arguably worse horrors.

A remarkable movie, so underrated! The little girll/oracle has smallpox, brought by the european conquerors. The locals have no immunity against the disease, and it will kill millions. The Mayans knew how our solar system looks like and were able to predict eclipses quite accurately. They used this knowledge to manipulate people: when you see the Inca (High Ruler) and the High Priest looking at each other, they know very well the eclipse is about to happen. The crowd is stricken with fear, thinking that the Sun God is dying. However, the human sacrifices wil "bring him back to life", so to speak. The poor mother-in-law is old, useless to the Mayans, no-one will take care of her or feed her, she will die of starvation and abuse.

Fear! His father was wrong about fear. They became complacent in the little paradise and ignored the sign of danger from the passers by. By the end he learns a healthy fear is an asset. Finally when he sees the ships he has enough fear to move further into the forest with his wife and children. His oppressors historically welcomed the ships and paid the price and were conquered. The High Priest knew enough astronomy that they could predict the eclipse but they kept that powerful information secret to control the people and appear all powerful. They needed sacrifices to the Sun God so they went an captured smaller naive tribes. Its also a lesson in home turf advantage in a fight. The tables turn. He knows were the traps are...the hiding places. The weapons they used for hunting. The little witch predicted the jaguar (black panther) and told them it would be their end and it was.

To show a more pure blooded indigenous people, it would have been much more realistic and historically accurate if the director used all actors that were Asian or all Native American as opposed to a mishmash of mestizos and mulattos. The movie makers missed the mark on that aspect. Still, a good production. 👍🏻

No, you can't outrun a jaguar, specially in a jungle, specially in short distances. Jaguars run at 50 mph, Usain Bolt has a 27mph mark... They run faster, the jump higher, they are stronger, they swim faster... So no, there's absolutely no way the protagonist survive that if the jaguar was trying to kill him (which it was by what the film show us) and for sure there's no way the jaguar got surprise by 5 men cuz she was very focus on killing one. The whole jaguar situation is very unrealistic. But meh, i dont think that make the film less good.

The movie is confusing because the although the Mayan civilization was gone there were small tribes like the ones depicted in this movie that were Mayan but very small tribes in the Yucatán and Veracruz areas at that time. Those small Mayan tribes along with other smaller tribes like the Tlaxcala and Cempoala all joined the Spaniards to fight against the Azteca. Another misconception is they Hernan Cortez conquered the Azteca which is how the history books like to describe it but they lost almost every battle against the Aztecs for a 2 year period before accidentally infecting the Azteca with small pox which the Azteca thought was a punishment from their gods for allowing Spaniards into their capitol city of Tenochtitlan. Once small pox ravaged the entire city much like it did Europe during the black Plague Spanish scouts sent word to Cortez that the Azteca were infected and a final siege of the city was performed and without much resistance the Spaniards who did have vaccines for their soldiers for small pox attacked and burned everything down and took all the gold back to Spain for the king of Spain.

This movie is really entertaining but it is kind of Historical Fiction because it was the spanish that brought the pox to North America, in the movie was already there. And unbeknownst to some people the Mayan weren't complete gone. There were some tribes that decended and kept their traditions known as the Post Classic Mayan civilization. They were constantly warring with another civilization that was at the time in its prime, the Aztecs. Some tribes of the remaining Mayan civilization and other independent tribes from the areas even help the Spaniards get rid of the Aztec's supremacy in what is today Southern Mexico. This was because they thought they were gonna get rid of their tyrannical empire but in reality as they would later find out, they were just switching one tyrant for another.
