Robin Williams took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the movie. The scene where he tells Matt Damon a story about how his late wife used to fart in her sleep was improvised, and Damon cracked up laughing and the cameraman cracked up laughing as well.

To elaborate a bit, the moment that the camera is shaking is actually a combination of improvised jokes from Williams and Damon. While filming, Williams would alter his wife's story slightly around the farting bit (which the farting part was scripted). During one of those riffs, he said that she even lit them on fire or something like that. Damon then replied, "was that how she died?" And Williams nodded yes while everyone was laughing uncontrollably. They talk about this in the DVD/BluRay commentary.

It really is incredible that someone so young was able to make such relatable characters that were middle-aged like Sean (Robin Williams) and the Professor (Stellin Skarsgard). My all-time favorite monologue is this park bench scene with Williams and Damon.

Everyone pays attention to Matt Damon during that very emotional scene. The things that stands out for me is the shot of Robin Williams over his shoulder when all you can see is his eyes. I don't know anyone else who could smile with their eyes the way Robin Williams can. I miss him so. thank you for a great reaction.

Robin Williams was a national treasure. As always, he improvised parts of this movie. The wife farting in her sleep scene was improvised and Matt Damons's laughter was real. The line at the end "son of a bitch stole my like" was also improvised. The script called for him to just gaze pensively after reading the letter. Williams added the line.

If we're being honest, not every practicing therapist exactly graduated at the top of their class. I don't think you need a therapist with your background, but someone with genuine empathy that can meet you at your level and develop a sincere rapport of trust. That's the person that can get you to answer the right questions to help open those floodgates. Gerry wanted Will to be successful, and Sean wanted Will to be happy & fulfilled. If you follow happiness & fulfillment, the success will either follow or not matter that much. Having a gift doesn't obligate one to use it and share it. Clearly, Will wouldn't have done other people's formulas so publicly if he didn't want to get found out. He was practically crying out for some positive attention.

When one movie has 3-4 VERY memorable 1 on 1 conversations that are so powerful. The bench became a makeshift memorial for a while when people found out about the passing of Williams. Both Matt and Ben have natural Boston accents since they are from there, so it makes it so authentic. 1979's The Jerk with Steve Martin is one of the funniest movies I have seen. It's not a 90s movie, but I highly recommend it. Rom/Com 1993 - As Good as It Gets with Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt and Greg Kinnear.

Foster parents aren’t people who adopt children, they just agree to take care of them/ live with them. It’s not legally binding for life, it doesn’t make them family, and it can be temporary. It’s often a setup for older children who never were adopted, and now probably never will be, because most people want to adopt babies or toddlers. If a family agrees to foster they get money from the government to help pay for the child (since the child still officially belongs to the state until they’re 18). So there is a real history of not so nice people taking in multiple foster kids just for the money. Another interesting film about that is white oleander. It’s pretty grim but interesting.

My mother had one until she had a stroke in her 50s. She told me she used to write out things verbatim from textbooks in exams back in university because she could recall page numbers and passages. I did NOT inherit that gift. I can barely remember what I was talking about 5 minutes ago. lol Also, you can only be hypnotized if you want to be hypnotized or think you can be.

Forms of therapy aside, I would have serious concerns with any therapist who did not immediately kick the professor and his TA out before starting the session. Therapy is a highly personnel thing, particularly when trying to deal with the types of issues Will was experiencing. Thinking that would involve some effectively strangers and not part of a group therapy type session is very unprofessional and would give me very little confidence in the associated therapist's skills and empathy. If this was just an initial meet and greet and not a session or something similar, maybe, but they did not convey it as such in the scenes shown.

Really great film and one of Robin Williams' best performances, up there with Good Morning Vietnam, The Fisher King, Awakenings and Insomnia for me. For a while, I was actually reluctant to see this film because I initially thought that the story sounded too corny for my liking. However, I decided to bite the bullet one day and finally watch it and I was impressed by how authentic everything felt. Especially the relationship between Will and Sean, which felt like I was watching two people actually bond with each other during the therapy sessions instead of just pretending to. Also, I think the film is really emotionally intelligent in it's portrayal of things like love, relationships, grief and finding meaning out of life. I like that it doesn't pander to the audience about these themes by telling them what they want to hear. Finally, just to add the icing on the cake, this film also introduced me to music of Elliott Smith.

Simon Ward, Montgomery Clift, Robert Redford, young Jon Voigt, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Clive Owen, and of course Errol Flynn and Charles Boyer. And can he act? Hell, yes, he can act! LOVE both of your reactions... so very thoughtful... of this brilliant film. Robin Williams was absolutely incredible, as was Matt Damon. EVERYBODY was great... and the writing was spot on. Some amazing films worth checking out: "ARRIVAL," (a brilliant Sci-Fi film that has so many wonderful layers), "PLEASANTVILLE" (starts off a comedy and then wonderfully evolves into so much more. A beautifully shot film with amazing performances.), "CHILDREN OF MEN" (a near-future dystopian tale that will make your jaw drop.), "GRAVITY" (from the same director of Children of Men... this is an intense drama-drenched performance and story starring Sandra Bullock. Astounding), "AMELIE" (a brilliant French film that is magical beyond reason with a heart to match.) and "STRANGER THAN FICTION" (another magical film that has an all-star cast, but it's a hidden gem. Nobody talks about it, but it's absolutely amazing.) SUBSCRIBING! and... Looking forward to more! Cheers!

This was a really good reaction. I enjoyed it. Your girlfriend was able to hold it together when a lot of people fall apart, during the dramatic scenes between Will and Skyler.

Robin Williams won an Oscar for this role. And Matt & Ben won one too. For best original screenplay. 😀👍

Can u believe these 2 dorks, Matt and Ben, started writing this in their early twenties, having no idea what or how to write! And someone they knew was blown away, and got a rough bit to robin! And how they got Robin and Stellen to do this, I'll never know! Robin won an Oscar for this! After Robin died, Matt goes back to the bench every year on Robin's bday, sometimes with his kids. The park bench is a memorial now! The younger guy is Casey Affleck! The red head is now in Yellowstone, Cole Hauser! A fantastic actor, but a bit of a loose cannon. His father was even a better actor, but certifiable! Wings Hauser!! Originally, they didn't know how to write the end. Robin comes up with the final line, director and Matt look at each other like, Movie done! He add-libbed the wife farting lines. Matt is cracking up for real. Even the camera man was rolling....look at the camera frame on that scene, it's shaking! Robin has done several top feel good movies. This, patch Adams, good morning Vietnam, awakenings, Dead Poets, and really one could say the bird cage, Doubtfire and Jumanji....which is really a movie about Spielberg's relationship with his dad. Llll

Great reaction. One way to look at this, is that the *only* antagonist in this story is Will himself. Every other character is a protagonist trying to help Will. His friends, the girl, the professor, the therapist ... all trying to help him, yet he's his own worst enemy. An alternate title could have been "The Redemption of Will Hunting".

They both cared and wanted the best for Will. They just went about it in different ways

I'd argue that while Lambeau cared about Will, his wishes for him were a bit more selfish... or at least were for the "greater good." Gerry would have only been satisfied if Will chose his path of advanced mathematics. Sean truly wanted Will to find his own path in life, and put Will's happiness as the goal.

@@CraigKostelecky The professor doesn't give af about Will beyond taking credit for "discovering" the next math whiz. All he cares about is success.

I feel like the tension between Gerry, Sean, and Will is a kind of Strict Father vs Understanding Mother vs Child dynamic. I do agree that Sean tends to be more right, because he understands Will's feelings and what he's going through whereas Gerry doesn't, but Gerry does frequently have his points when it comes to specific things. I think the trouble is that if they actually tried to do things Gerry's way, especially without making any allowances for someone's mental state/health, it'd be doomed to failure.

Hypnosis therapy. Yes, it's a thing. I had a friend who tried it to quit smoking. He said that a woman was going through a questionaire before his first session. One question that she asked was, "Do you smoke after sex?" He responded, " No, but sometimes I get a little chapped."

I love this movie. Without Kevin Smith becoming a producer on the film Good Will Hunting, no studio wanted either Matt Damon nor Ben Affleck in the lead roles. Even though they had both written the screenplay, the studios considered them to be unknowns. Kevin Smith, thankfully, convinced them otherwise. Please watch Clerks.(1994) Written/Directed/Starring Kevin Smith
