"This is pain... historical pain" - Call of Duty Vanguard - Stalingrad Reaction

So by request, my reaction to the Stalingrad mission... pain... pain... it hurts so much. Why Call of Duty? What happened to WaW? What happened to storming Normandy with 2nd Rangers?
This hurt. It was fun, but it hurt my soul... I'll do the others too if you want but god damn.

The uniforms are the M43 tunic, specifically the officer’s variant with chest pockets. These wouldn’t have been seen until February of 1943. I think the colored shoulder boards were for parade use and the subdued ones with only the piping colored were for field use. The Mosin clip pouches are definitely post war variants. The Mosin itself is interesting because it has the earlier PEM scope which is more correct for the date than the more famous PU that’s the darling of Hollywood. Not sure who gets the silver medal in this event-China’s losses were in the same neighborhood as Russia’s but it’s population was substantially larger. It’s worth noting that almost all of the uniforms and equipment modeled are of the 1950s and 1960s issued patterns. A common problem as this is what most costume houses that COD developers among other dev teams utilize, brand as GPW era. Ironically, the “chief medical officer” is one of the only models wearing the correct uniform for this time frame, although most female medical personnel, not at the immediate frontline, would have likely been wearing the issue skirts. Petrovka is slightly closer, at least wearing a war era tunic, but is the male pattern, officers model tunic which did not see wide issue to enlisted personnel prior to 1945. I think it’s worth noting that many of the “extras” milling around in the background are all wearing post war era equipment, mixed with the pre-war issue equipment suspenders, which did not see significant enough production for issue through the outbreak of war. The caps and helmets are both the pattern issued after the end of the war. All in all, entirely wrong other than it’s technically Soviet era uniforms and equipment, just not the GPW types.

They got the scope on the Mosin wrong. I’m an American, any my first rifle was (and still is, I love it to death) an M91/30 Mosin. Mine is just a standard infantry rifle with plain old iron sights, but I have coveted the PU Sniper variant for years. The scope they modeled on that rifle looks like a ZF-39, which was made by Zeiss, a small optics company from the Fatherland… You can tell this from the, sorry I can’t think of a better word, bulges at the front and rear of the scope. Soviet scopes were at least half as long and were only as thick as the central portion of the scope modeled here. The Soviet PU scope was much smaller, less complicated, but arguably more durable. Zeiss did have an edge on glass clarity, but the robustness of the Soviet design made quite a few snipers on the Eastern front prefer the Soviet scope. The crosshair is wrong for both scopes, however. That is a plain and simple fine cross reticle. A true German ZF-39 has a three post reticle; there’s a small gap between the three posts, with the center post having a point at its top. The Soviet PU scope shared this reticle design as the Soviets worked with, and copied a good amount of their sniper doctrine from Germany. (While they copied it, they also took sniper doctrine far more seriously than the Wehrmacht. The S.S. is a different beast, though.) So yeah, from my little area of pseudo expertise, they screwed the pooch. Go figure. *Edit* And now I feel kind of bad, because of all the weapon errors you pointed out and all the ones that hurt you, I have now added the pain of them screwing up the rifle that is the pride of the Soviet Union. But I only feel kind of bad, since you have communist leanings and I am a filthy Capitalist, I do ever so slightly enjoy your pain. ;)

Leanings? Man I am doubled over and angry at the universe. Yeah the scope is wrong, but given that it is a privately owned Mosin I figured he put his own scope on it. So I didn't notice. And of course being smooth brained and on a first reaction I didn't pick up on the incorrect reticule until after I'd recorded. The rifle itself is beautifully modelled though, that bolt clear when she picks it up rustled my jimmies.

Of course the bolt is going to work. For crying out loud that warhorse is still fighting in certain parts of the world. But as for checking her ammo, no. For giggles I did that with my rifle, which has no scope, and couldn’t see jack about my ammo. Adding the scope to the Mosin makes checking ammo and loading ammo harder. It’s very nicely modeled, I agree. But the inaccuracies kill it for me. And with all the free resources out there to make sure you have stuff done right, there’s no excuse for this kind of sloppiness.

I’m new to the channel and I’m loving the content! When you started talking about Ernst Udet and the failed project that was the He 177 I got REALLY excited because I actually wrote a huge paper a little over a year ago on the Luftwaffe’s high command from 1936-1945 with Willhelm Wimmer, Ernst Udet, Erhard Milch, and of course Goering. It was basically an overview of some of their more common or influential blunders and how they directly impacted the Luftwaffe as a fighting force as well as the war effort as a whole (wasting resources on projects that went nowhere, constant design requirement changes that created nightmares for engineers like the He-177 having to dive bomb and the Me-262 having to be able to carry bombs, plus numerous issues regarding their operational doctrine). I’m sure you know even more than I do but I just wanted to mention it because the only other time I’ve heard someone mentioning the engineering nightmare that was the He-177 being structurally reinforced to dive bomb was in some of the books or documents I read through while doing research for that paper and I thought it was really cool hearing someone talk about it! Assault Rifles I knew did come out later but some of the guns and when some tanks come out, besides the King Tiger, I knew that came out a lot later. You pointing out the badges and the insignias like that on the uniforms and knowing the their divisions like that on the spot was amazing. This is why I watch your videos.

After watching your video on the El Alamein mission, I was so incensed that I chose to replay CoD2. Man, what a game and it actually had some respect for history. There's plenty that was still technically wrong with the game, such as G43s appearing in Stalingrad instead of G41(W)s (understandable for simplicity of game assets), the Mosin model having a Finnish M28/30 rear sight for some reason, and the general overuse of their Panzer II model, but I'm much more willing to look past some of these things when a game gives more general respect for the subject matter overall.

He recovered got a Purple Heart and then re-join his company and fight in the battle of Iwo Jima Then fight in the Korean War. I don’t know how the man survived all of this but he did sadly later in life he developed dementia and will call the Dallas bomb squad because we live in Texas and would say that the “gooks” we’re building bombs in his garage I remember specifically I was about five years old he tapped me on my shoulder and they had clown decorations in there kitchen and he told me whispered in my ear do you see those japs, talking about the clown decorations said they are marching here to kill us. 25:47 so I didn't think of this the first time but: That is a balcony... not just any balcony, but a balcony attached to a completely fine and maintained building. Now somehow, a woman jumping and grabbing the ledge, which would have had marginally more force than if she had stoot on the balcony and jumped, fucking disintegrates this balcony... you know, the part where people are supposed to stand on? which is most definitely designed to not collapse from a person jumping on it?| Now if it was an old shoddy building, fine, but the fence on that thing is in prestine condition! ... it is not only historically inaccurate, but also just flips the finger to engineering it seems.

From what I know of WW2 Firearms, the Russains never had M1 Garand in their Army for the Bolt would lock up in the cold of winter, and the Soldier is in winter clothing. How I know is the Rifle has a very distinct gas tube that only the Garand has and well the Bolt top and the Sight is also very distinct.

One barrel was made for birdshot, one barrel made for buckshot, and one barrel was a 9.3mm big game cartridge designed to take down things like a charging elephant. Funny part is, this was issued to units operating in _north africa_ where there aren’t any elephants. Sounds like some out of touch high up guy was like “oh they’re in Africa? Stalingrad was the show city of the USSR as it had the dictators name in it. Which meant consequentially if you lived in the inner city of Stalingrad you were rather wealthy by Soviet standards. However with the exception of some parts, such as the samovar and the piano. Most Russian apartments looked similar and were of similar size post Stalin. The big issue was rural development and the reconstruction post WW2. As the USSR didn’t accept the Marshall plan it was forced behind the West in development.

The uniforms themselves are horribly inaccurate. The Golden belt buckles with the star in them did not exist until post-1969 uniform regulation changes. During WWII, for enlistedmen at least, they were essentially a civilian-style belt which was much thinner. They also pictured an OBR.35 uniform with shoulder boards (They only had collar tabs)
