This Is NOT Sparta: PAUL CARTLEDGE Clears Up The Complex History Of Ancient Spartan Culture
Ойын-сауық
What an absolute privilege to sit down with the world's leading expert in Sparta: professor Paul Cartledge. Not only is Paul Cartledge a Cambridge professor with an unbelievable amount of published academic articles and non-fiction books under his belt, but he was also made AN HONOURARY CITIZEN OF SPARTA right before his sixtieth birthday!? It truly doesn't get any better than that.
Today, Professor Cartledge kindly gave me a few minutes of his time in between his lectures to chat about the peculiar aspects of Spartan life. I'd like to formally thank him (yet again) for taking time out of his busy schedule to help me - and now all of you - navigate this epic landscape of Spartan history.

Thank you so much 🥹
I’m so glad this interview exists. I tried to read this book because I was trying to research Sparta to write fiction. Going to add this to my research materials. Hopefully this helps me to go back and finish the book.
like the eminent Paul Cartledge, i too began to study the Ancient Greeks as a child. mostly from Hercules movies and Marvel Comics.
What an excellent video as usual, this one was particularly inspiring .. thank you

Thank you so much!!! I plan to do more books in the near future, so have no fear :)
Thank you for a really excellent interview. Now I want to learn the Greek alphabet, sadly I think old age and being as thick as a planc precludes me learning Greek. II was never any good at languages and being a Brummie I struggle with English!

You can ALWAYS learn the Greek alphabet no matter what stage of life you’re at!!! And thank you for the compliment of the video - it’s hugely appreciated :)
Very interesting video! It's crazu to think 2500 years after the fact, what we know about Sparta is still evolving, and we are taking a deeper look at things we already know. You should reach out to Roel Konijnendijk as well!

Been meaning to look into Spartan culture. Thanks. You're videos are a great watch for a philosophy and psychology student. :) Do you think you could reach out to Donald Robertson? I think he would be good to collaborate with. He's a psychotherapist who also uses philosophy in his practice, Greek philosophy and stoicism in particular.
Molon Labe Sounds very badass. But at the end of the battle ...that's exactly what they did.
