The theme of “Who Killed the Electric Car” lives on at GM!

Yeah they're trying to pad the pockets of the union workers and the suppliers at the cost of this ridiculously wasteful design. When this ultimately fails both financially and logistically, they'll say EVs are impossible to make money on. Without Tesla around to keep them honest, they would get away with it too.

There have been many indicators over the years that GM was full, from top to bottom, with EV haters and EV sceptics (and certainly some notable exceptions, but sadly not enough). Especially at the top. So now that the executives finally bit the bullet and decided to make the shift to EV, well . . . Surprise, Surprise!! it turns out they can't actually do it. They spent a fortune advertising all the new Ultium EVs early last year. Now over a year later the cars are just now starting to trickle out, in single digits per day. Let's hope they've done a better job on the Lyriq and better still on the Equinox. It would be bad all the way around if GM implodes.

Hello and thank you Sandy and Crew for such an overview! I watch your vids a lot, especially the “teardowns.” You help reveal some amazing and innovative features including safety features, versatility, and creativity I wish were trickled down to ALL automakers in one application or another. With the limitations, it hopefully with get that particular manufacturers’ attention. However, I have lots of unanswered questions about BEVS and PHEVs vs ICE, and the practicality and safety concerns regarding Autopilot in a world where we appear so distracted already. Even though this video does not necessarily focus in on that particular interest, you have touched the subject many times before, and you are more than qualified to delve into the subject. Yes, “Driver Assistance” aides we need to assist us in being safer, more efficient, and more aware. But I beg to differ on many of their practical applications. It is almost as if we are being sold BEVs as the next thing since water. What of Hydrogen Fuel Cells and other Bio-fuel technologies we have been hearing about? I like how Toyota and Mazda and BMW and others I am sure of have chosen not to put “all their eggs in one basket” in such a dynamic market. Thank you for making such informative videos. We need more real world comparisons between all these type of technologies. I’m advocating for a fun [filmed] competition between ICE vs BEV vs PHEV vs Hydrogen Fuel Cells and other alternative fuel sources to do [cross-country] destination runs across the continental US and in all countries where they appear to be trying to bury ICE vehicles. I am actually becoming convinced that we will be very surprised. ELON inspires me just as Nikola Tesla does. We should not forget the past and our history if we ever wish to move forward. Range anxieties and practicality are a must! I would so appreciate a sit down interview with ELON and even yourself as you did on more than one occasion. But I’m still very new on this platform. All these different automobile variations in terms of their sourced fuel applications all have their practicality and niche, so why not let them demonstrate their practicalities in a healthy and fun competition? Thanks again and keep cranking out those videos.
Very informative - loved those charts at the end. I expect all the steel in the pack is to be able to say it is ruggered and efficiently packed.
Since the Hummer EV came out, I had a feeling how inefficient and lackluster the engineering and design was going to be, this just confirms it. Thanks Munro team!
@JasonWW2000

@davidmenasco5743

In their defense, it was pretty clear from day one that the Hummer EV was a marketing exercise and not really supposed to be anything else. The job of the Hummer EV was to reorient costumer perceptions of EVs and make it socially acceptable for men who are accustomed to driving big hulking inefficient pickup trucks to buy EVs. I think it did this pretty well and was really a stroke of marketing genius. The big surprise (for GM) came when people lined up around the block to get them. They were probably also a little surprised at how fast it could accelerate. They obviously didn't intend to make very many. So the emphasis in the design here is to make a truck that won't fall apart. The question is, how's that Lyriq looking? It took a little longer in development. Hopefully it's not a disaster. And hopefully they will actually ramp it up soon. Early signs are that it might be ok.

A short design cycle, plus the LG/Bolt fires on their mind. I'm sure that factored into the design of an off-road worthy battery pack. Thanks for the overview! GM definitely has some opportunities to clean up and streamline the packaging of these modules, and I'd love to hear some GM engineers speak to some of the design choices (e.g., I wonder whether the thermal compound is doubling as an electrical insulator). It will also be interesting to see variations of these packs as GM starts to use other cell formats and pack configurations. The single-stack pack from the LYRIQ will be interesting to see, as will packs that eventually incorporate cylindrical, prismatic, and lithium-metal pouch cells.
19:29 The cells are effectively in 6P configuration across the entire pack for the HUMMER EV, so losing a single cell will reduce the entire pack capacity by 1/6th. Yes, it is possible to use smaller cells to increase redundancy to the point that the battery capacity is less affected by a single lost cell, but the counter argument is, perhaps don't sell or use a battery with faulty cells in the first place. 🤷♂
@Doctorbasss
Жыл бұрын
Loosing a cell that is connected in parallel can lead to many problems. That cell could become a slow short, draining all the 5 other cells and create imbalance that the passive resistors of all other cells in phe pack can not keep up with.... it can mean an internal short( worst case) or broken connection of the tab, meaning that it become isolated(best case if it is not intermittent) or also be a broken bms connectikn to the cell, meaning danger of imbalanced 2 consecutive cells that are not properly monitored by the bms.
@newscoulomb3705
Жыл бұрын
@@Doctorbasss Oh, sure. There are a lot of problems that can result due to a bad cell, but for short-term, losing a single cell isn't catastrophic. For cars with 2P or 3P configurations, you're talking about losing half to a third of your range. for 1P configurations, your car is basically dead. The Chevy Bolt EV is 3P, and early on, there were some cars that had issues with bad cells. They functioned normally until the car got down to under 30%, at which point the car would just die unexpectedly without notice. All it took was for a single cell to fail (or start to fail).
@Doctorbasss
Жыл бұрын
@@newscoulomb3705 If the battery operate at 7 or 8C max on 3p than it become around 12C on 2p which would create imbalance on the 2p vs the rest of the 3p cells and make the new 2p to age faster and make the bms hard time to rebalance everything. On my gen 1 Volt it is in 96s3p and this battery design with laser welded pouch and active cooling is really robust.

GM has also built this battery pack. to be serviceable (unlike the new Model Y packs). So if you somehow lose a cell then you can replace one battery module instead of the entire pack.
@saff226
Жыл бұрын
@@stephenj4937 that's not a long term solution. That's a quick fix to sell it and make it someone else's problem when the entire pack keeps going out of balance. All the cells in the pack should be the same age. You shouldn't just swap out a single cell.
That battery weighs ~1k lbs more then my first car, a 1979 VW rabbit
When batteries go bad, they are not just an open circuit. The question is if you lose one or a few of Cylindrical Cell isn’t BMS needs to back off the charging capacity of the whole module or that cell would be over charged? Isn’t going to be the same as this large cell? The cell has large contacts surface area between each other’s, reduces thermal impedance between the cells next to it. Thermal equalization between the cells allows consistency of cells capacity across the module results in higher module current capability. Thank you, for showing this cool stuff.

So are you saying, that the hummer EV tear down report won’t be a hot seller?? I couldn’t imagine why..
A Hummer is not lean or efficient, who would have ever imagined that.... continuing where they left off the last time this vehicle was in production. 🤣🤣
Tactical cooling lines 😂
Wow. Just wow.
*Steel battery pack frames are far stronger than aluminum. *GM could definitely do better on the number of components for the battery carrier. *Two parallel 400 volt packs is what allows GM to support 350KW charging *The contactor assembly is complex, but I suspect this is to support the heat pump system *I like the thermal runaway barriers in the module *They completely missed the coolant structure. Those plastic runs are compressible and will expand when compressed. This allows *GM to tighten down the battery module to prevent water leakage. *GM has definitely designed to swap out modules, thus the capacity loss when a cell has a problem and won't hold a charge. *The nylon lines appear to be designed to last more than the standard 10 years of a cooling hose. *Copper is a better conductor than aluminum. Makes for a far better buss bar.
Would expect nothing less from GM :)
If i was a a GM investor i'd be headed for the EXIT

Antonio may have been joking about "tactical cooling lines" but doesn't GM have military contracts for Ultium-based products? One of my big fears with Ultium in general is that GM would design it for military applications and then attempt to spread out the cost with high volume, sacrificing range and efficiency (and profits!) of thier consumer-facing products. And IMO that is exactly what we are seeing here. This is modularity gone wrong. At least GM is leading the weigh.

Fast and cheap is easily attainable quickly, but unnecessary costs and materials can amass over time. Doing slow and expensive development first will then become fast and inexpensive over time, and save from unnecessary costs, materials and quality issues. This Hummer EV is Munroe version of "Engineering Nightmare "
About the parallel cells config, Loosing a cell that is connected in parallel can lead to many problems. That cell could become a slow short, draining all the 5 other parallel cells and create imbalance that the passive resistors of the bms for all other cells in the pack can not keep up with.... it can mean an internal short( worst case) or broken connection of the tab, meaning that it become isolated(best case if it is not intermittent) or also be a broken bms connectikn to the cell, meaning danger of imbalanced 2 consecutive cells that are not properly monitored by the bms.
Everyone at Munro is getting JACKED. There must be a gym somewhere closeby.
Only 2 hummers were sold in Q1 of 2023. GM expects approximately 70,000 Bolts to be sold by year end 2023 at which time production will cease. The Bolt currently makes up the vast majority of GM's EV sales. By comparison Tesla sold 93,294 Model Y's in the US alone in Q1 of 2023. In Q1 of 2023 it also became the best selling SUV and became the 4th best selling vehicle in the US beating out the RAV4. They sold a total of 759,000 Model Y's world wide in 2022 which made it the 4th best selling vehicle in the world and number 1 in terms of revenue. It is on a trajectory by year end 2023 to become the number 1 top selling vehicle in the world. Yet GM CEO Mary Barra, has claimed publicly on numerous occasions they will catch Tesla by 2025. In what deluded fantasy does she live in? The reality is they hemorrhage lots of money on every EV and will be so far behind Tesla you will need a telescope to find them.
