I hate it when people respond with 'weet ik veel' usually kids do this, when my daughter responds like that, she'll get a lecture in proper responding. Its quite obnoxious most of the time to say 'weet ik veel'

Sorry, I have to defend our student! This was not a stupid answer. I asked about 'expressions' and that's more than just 'proverbs'. In linguistics 'hallo!', 'dag' are called 'stereotyped expressions' according to this article ​en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentence_(linguistics). Besides, for example 'morgen!' is idiomatic too. The meaning, when we shout it, is 'Good morning', but it's not what we literally say. Also the word 'toch' is a very interesting Dutch word that is applied in specific and different situations and can have different connotations. It's not a word that you just translate and start using!

@@LearndutchOrg I like how we use "Toch?" in a similar way that english speakers use "Right?". But add just a single word, "Dus toch?", and the meaning shift completely away from that similarity.

In Rome, when you leave the door open, we say "Vivi al Colosseo?" (Do you live in the Colosseum) because the Colosseum has no doors😂

I wonder that too, because I'm also Canadian and when I speak Dutch people initially think I am fluent based on my accent, then they're surprised when I don't understand things or don't know how to say things. I think there are some subtle similarities between the standard Canadian English and Netherlandish Dutch accents that other accents don't have, such as the particular vowel sounds. I find the opposite is also true: Dutch people who move to Canada seem to learn a Canadian accent much faster than anyone else.

reaperexpress I find that a bit odd to be perfectly honest. To my ears, a Canadian accent isn’t too far removed from an American accent, and Americans don’t have the same ease of speaking Dutch it seems. Plus, Dutch vowel sounds are quite far removed from the Canadian ones - stuff like “aa”, “ui”, “eu” - and it seems to me vowels for a large part make or break an accent. So at least to me it seems even more impressive :)

Yes that are their names. Especially Eline is either very good at guessing and pronouncing Dutch (gonna guess she might have had some Dutch influences, like Dutch grandparents cause Eline is a common Dutch name- though no judgement) or she has been studying Dutch for a quite some time.

Zijn heel veel Nederlanders na De Oorlog geëmigreerd naar Canada. Zou me niets verbazen als ze Nederlanders in de familie heb zitten. Is misschien te vergelijken met als je hier bijvoorbeeld een Chinees vraagt of die Mandarijn/Kantonees spreekt en dan antwoord "ik versta het wel maar spreek het niet", ben ik persoonlijk wel vaak tegengekomen.

@@tijnjansen858 That is exactly true. I immigrated at age 3 and taught myself to read with Asterix and Magriet etc. Whatever I could obtain. My comprehension is pretty good actually, but spelling is a complete disaster. Very basic. Speaking is fun, I try whenever I can and enjoy coming back to visit my family.

Actually none of the 'sayings' make any sense if translated directly. Dutch people also need to learn what they mean. They teach that at highschool right. The same goes for any language.

the transformation from "easy" to the nonsensical "easy peasy lemon squeezy" is the same kind as the Dutch "helaas" to "helaas pindakaas". Not the meaning, but making a short phrase / standard reply longer with a nonsensical rhyme, because it will sound friendlier than a single word. There are plenty more examples in both languages, though i can't think of any from the top of my head.

This was the only one I remember from my grandpa: kleine kinder kleine sorgen, grooten kedren, grooten sorgen

For the english speakers. "Weet ik veel?" is similar to "How would I know?" and depending on context is either very informal to even mildly rude. Chalk up to "Dutch Directness" :P

i work on New Zealand in frontline tourism at the airport and I pick up this Kiwi-girl who said she had just come from Amsterdam and she learned a new Dutch word: and as she said it, it sounded like: FCK ALL ...I was shocked at het swearing but she was saying the dutch word Fakkel , in english that be a Torch (like the Olympic torch, torch) ...fakkel it is ☺

Funny that the guy calls the ij the ieg, my Ecuadorian ex used to do the same. Also Utrecht they tend to call it Utretsj. What's interesting about it to me is that they make the sound based on how it's spelled, rather than what they've heard it said as. So i think a lot of pronouniation issues can be solved by showing them a different spelling of the same word that resembles the sounds they associate with the letters. So for Spanish speakers Utrecht would become Utrejt since they pronounce the j as a dutch g.

M'n Helderse Oma, "WEET ik VEEL!!" The only English she knew was, "Time is money" & "Money in de pocket". Only the "O's" were very long. Lol! Every summer, seemed like at least one German tourist would ignore the rip tide warnings and you'd read it out loud from the paper to her ('80's!). She'd been a young mother during the Occupation in the '40's, and she'd be in the kitchen busy and would simply respond, "Nog 'n stomme Mof weg!" I miss you Jo! Veel liefs!

There is a lot of culture in dutch expressions. They say we don't have a real identity but that's not true and you can see that in our expression. They are smart and like this very down to earth or grounded.

I love how you can tell that the Italian lady is Italian just by looking at how she is moving her hands if you mute the video.

Dat legt hem geen windeieren. That does not lay him wind eggs. Wind eggs are like empty shells, or duds. The fact that he is not getting them, means he is succesful. On the same page; Het gaat hem voor de wind. He's got the wind in his back. He is doing well.

"Weet Ik veel", en "het kan me niet schelen" I misused that words even to my bosses when I started learning/speaking Dutch Luckily people knew I am trying to integrate and I, later on, found out what it means in different scenarios!

Die laatste is ook een Engels spreekwoord, alleen wordt het ietsje anders geschreven: "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth".

Niks typisch Antwerps hoor. Veel Nederlanders gebruiken die uitdrukking om aan te geven dat we iets ZO niet doen. Dat gaat niet door, zo zijn we niet getrouwd!

"Ben je in de kerk geboren, of zo?" Mostly followed by: "Ik stook niet voor de kat z'n kut!" ("I don't heat (the house) for the cat's pussy!")

I heard an expression about falling down the stairs some time ago, something about consequences of actions i believe, but i forgot it :|

You mean: "daarom is geen reden, als je van de trap af valt ben je gauw beneden" ? But that is not really about concequences. It is for when you ask "waarom" (why) and the other person answers just "daarom" (because). But it is kind if a childish thing to say so you generally won't hear it being said by any adults.

A long time a go it was used for getting a drastic haircut. 'Ben je van de trap gevallen?' but it is not commonly used anymore.

Not really, it is kinda materialistic. You could say about your new car: dit is mijn nieuwe aanwinst. You don't say it about people, unless when it is a joke

It definitely is harmless and to joke a little. When my husband and I met(whe met while on a holiday at Gran Canaria) he introduced me as his 'souvenir' from Spain. Well, his souvenir maintained, haha. Just for a little laugh..😊

Kleine correctie Bart. Het geld groeit ME niet op de rug. Je vergat "me". Maakt verschil!

Just a little bit of feedback on the backgroundmusic...it sounds like a depressing duck is making fun of them. Pick some more neutral music next time. This music is maybe fitting for short funny bits with accidental mistakes or bloopers, not general stories.

Please remove subtitles, they totally SUCK :D
