I lived close to the shore in Bariga area and used to just chill at the water front down my street to get cool breeze and I'd always ask myself. How come nobody ever thinks of opening up waterways and using water as a means of transport? This Lagoon connects Bariga, Akoka, Unilag, EbutteMetta, VI, Dolphin Estate, Chevron, Ikorodu, down to Ibeju, Epe, down to Ebutte Lekki...and then down to TinCan, Idumota and Apapa. This is lovely innovative thinking. I would encourage the Lagos state government to take it one step further and open this space up to investors/transport operators who can operate bigger ferry passenger boats(to reduce the amount of ferries in the space for safety) and sail longer routes/distances within the Lagoon space to areas with minimal wave turbulence. The Lagos State waterways corporation would then only need to -sell operating licenses for (passenger transport, cargo transport and tours) - dictate guides to entry (e.g ability to operate min of 7 ferries, employing minimum of 100 people) etc -regulate the space -make sure operators are operating to set standards. -conduct periodic and random audits, and inspections of equipment and safety -Create regulations and laws for transportation of passengers. -create regulations and laws for transportation of cargo. -provide infrastructure for the jetties, Parking for passengers and etc -Create a Lagos state Navy/coast guard department. -build central towers like light houses with military personnel on standby overlooking the area with binoculars ready for emergency situations. -Maybe also introduce aquatic life with big fishes that could boost the ecosystem and encourage tourism. If that becomes the case...this space could easily become a billion/trillion dollar industry of its own with huge revenue potential.

I think bigger ferries and boats, like the ones used in Turkey and other parts of Europe would probably quench the fear of Nigerians and you don't really need life jacket for those. Also, your car can come on the ride for those, so you will just continue your journey via road. This is great but can be much much developed!

The government really did good in the new development and I like the fact they are trying to reduce the traffic on the road, especially in Lagos where there is a lot of traffic to the point you stay on the road for like 5 to 6 hours getting to a nearby destination. So kudos to the government. And nice one mena. Truly safety first. That's very important.

As we grow older, our memories can play tricks on us. Eko Bridge opened in 1974/75, so the young man was correct on that. Your reference of 1969 might have been when the project was launched. I was a frequent user when it was newly opened, because it saved me from Carter bridge. The extension of the bridge to join the Lagos ring road (then under development did not happen until about 1980 or even later) - I refer to the area that caught fire 2 years ago, that has been shut down since (don't know if it has been reopened now). Lastly from Memory, Eko Bridge, was apparently the project that brought Julius Berger into Nigeria, and they never left after that. Even though Eko Bridge was a federal project, I sometimes confused it for a Lagos State project due to the closeness of Mobolaji Johnson to Julius Berger, and he used them in many other Lagos State projects. MB later became Chairman of Julius Berger, I think. When Muritala Mohammed suddenly sacked Gowon's government in July 1975, Johnson had no place to go (like many Gowon's governors, he had no house), it was JB who came to Johnson's aid by getting him an apartment, before he eventually made his own arrangements.

To be precise, the contract was signed in 1965 and the First Phase commisioned in 1968. This phase consisted of the actual bridge spanning Ajara River (yes, that is the official name of the stretch of water between Lagos Lagoon and Lagos Harbour) with ramps at Costain on the mainland and Ebute-Ero on Lagos Island. Other additions to the project (Iganmu, Western Avenue, Apongbon axes, etc.) that relate to the 1975 'opening' came later.

You don't care about positive developments but only negatives. Shows your mindset. The people of Màrọkọ́ matter of course, but to discount positive development is just plain stupidity and bitterness.

What is wrong with you? Lagos has far more revenue than all the eastern states combined. What about SW? North? SS? why do you people harbour so much hate towards the east? 🤮

This Lagos was Nigerians capital for almost 80 years, and the whole of Nigeria resources from each state was being invested in Lagos. Abuja has been capital of Nigeria for just 32 years go and see how great and beautiful Abuja is, if you choose any eastern state as capital of Nigeria for just 20 years and imagine how beautiful it will turn out.
