But what makes it NOT a perpetual motion device? Because there's no excess output? Or because eventually the ball does not have enough kinetic energy to make it back to the top bowl?

  • @abjoern

@@anarchyboy9393 because the motor at the top of the ramp hidden beneath the disc is gonna run out of battery. It seems like it might work without the motor, but without it, the ball would never be able to fly higher than its initial position in the bowl, since that'd mean it generated more kinetic energy than its potential energy

Many people have already answered this question, but they are actually very similar. The second is using an electric motor to raise the balls back up with mechanical power, the first has a hidden electromagnet at the bottom. They may seem different if you focus too hard on the mechanism, but the actual process is the same: Use electricity to add energy to the ball, causing it to get to the top.

@@R0DSTER As Andrew said here, it's adding energy. The slow motor lifting it up is slowly adding gravitational potential energy by lifting the ball, the magnet is adding Kinetic energy which is what allows it to get launched as fast as we see. If you were drawing a diagram of the system in a physics class, the two systems would look almost identical. Apologies if I was unclear ealier, but when I say process, I mean that in terms of the energy calculation. In most calculations, you would boil something down to the simplest form you can. For example, even though a gas engine and a diesel engine work completely differently in the actual design, I would draw the diagram "Fuel Goes in -> *combustion* -> torque comes out. Taking a step back from the fabrication, it *looks* like the same process.

How to build a Minecraft one. It takes some attempts to make it tho. 1 - Take a elevated railway booster track. 2 - bend it down, to the left or right. 3 - put alot of minecarts in the bend until it springs the carts. 4 - keep placing minecarts until one goes the opposite way of the majority. They bump to make it work.

At least the first one attempts to look like a perpetual motion device. The second one there is no attempt LOL

Perpetual motion is a lie until we invent a way to be 100% efficient which is damn well impossible

If the ball on the first went directly into the hole it would be the closest thing I know of to an actual perpetual motion device.

It's not that the balls will lose momentum, but even with an unending supply of energy, the friction would eventually have the materials grind each other out of existence.
