    The new spec exams are kind of designed to trip you over everywhere...and what makes it worse is they now utilise maths skills beyond the wider curriculum of the A Level as something you should know or deduce in that exam.... so they expect you to have wider / broader mathematical databse outside the curriculum itself. In that context, those who do further maths will find an edge (take for instance the new spec questions on sequence/series will be helped a lot by further maths chapters). I see that the old one pretty much sets you up if you just studied the text book and used past papers but the new spec you just have to keep doing questions, find gaps in knowledge/skill and keep filling them up leading to your exam... It seems for a good grade, one needs to go way beyond the explicit spec requirements unfortunately :/

    They are all randomly distributed on usual years, but the advance information for this year means you can prioritise what you need - check out this in my Google drive that gives an overview of which things are coming up in which paper. • @BicenMaths

    @BicenMaths

    2 жыл бұрын

    You’re welcome! This really depends on what sort of situation you are in - but for an average student, the sooner you can start revision, the better. Maths is a great subject to revise for, because you can be doing it from the very beginning of the course, looking at topics you’ve not studied that recently. I would usually recommend starting “proper revision” (and by that I mean timetabled revision) before your first set of major mocks in Year 13 (usually December or January in most schools) - including note taking, practising in timed conditions etc. During school holidays, I recommend approaching revision like a job - working 9am-5pm with breaks, and then having the evening and weekends off. This will be shared between your subjects. Closer to the exams, working until 7pm after school is sensible. But really, you should be “revising” all the way along the course - adding an extra 15-30 mins of time onto your homework by reviewing an earlier topic, or doing a timed exam question on something you’ve already studied. I hope this helps! Sorry I can’t be too specific, as my advice would vary according to your current achievement and what goal you’re hoping to reach! 👍🏼

The segment itself is made from the silver metal which costs £1.90 per cm2 It is bordered all the way around by a gold metal trim which costs £2.30 per cm. Hi. I wonder if you could help advise the best way forward here please.. My son is struggling with his maths A Level and due to take in a couple of months time. The pandemic has really not helped him. We have been told he should focus on past papers now, but often this leaves him not knowing where to start and really knocks his confidence. He's convinced he's going to do really badly now, maybe even fail. He needs the points to go to Uni though and really wants this to happen. So, should I help him concentrate on the mixed questions instead, at the end of each chapter in the book? Should we perhaps focus on 2 or 3 main topics to get them under his belt? We have watched this video and also the advance information (which is basically the whole spec as you mentioned!). Any advice would be so helpful. Thank you :)

    Hi there, Thanks for your message - so I wouldn’t recommend starting on full papers yet, especially if the content isn’t all covered to a point of understanding. What I would recommend doing, is starting with a few chapters, following my videos (which can be found in playlists on the homepage of my KZread channel). Then I would recommend using the Exam Questions by Topic document in my Bicen Maths Google Drive (linked in the About section). This way, your son would still be able to practise exam questions (and these should be done in timed conditions) but only on topics that you have worked through/learned carefully before hand. Before doing these Exam Qs, you might like to use some of the Mixed Exercises as a review as well. I think this method should give your son the opportunity to relearn content, and have things explained carefully, followed by some exam exposure too. This will work much better than what has been suggested! Do you have any questions? Thanks, Mr Bicen

  • @BicenMaths

    @BicenMaths

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hmmm that’s a good question! It definitely comes down to your strengths individually, but I’d recommend doing 2 out of FM1/FS1/D1/FP1 - the “2” modules are generally harder, and there’s less material out there if you’re looking for support. My personal pick is FM1 and FS1, because they also support your applied for maths as well. I think FP1 is quite tricky, as it goes beyond the Pure stuff for further, but if pure is what you’re into, then it’s still a good one! I personally don’t like D1 so much, but I know some people really like this and get great marks on it. What are your current preferences/what parts of maths do you enjoy the most? And can you do any combo you like at your school? 👍🏼

    @@BicenMaths Hello, thanks for the quick reply and great videos! The school is letting us decide which optional modules we can undertake with some self study required if need be. What does decision maths consist of? I’ve heard it’s a little bit different to other fields of mathematics and I’ve never had any experience with computer science whatsoever. Is decision maths really formulaic or does it require a lot of problem solving? I guess I would like to undertake the easier modules that require less problem solving comparatively. The 2 modules with the least curveball (hard) sort of questions. Which two would those be? Thanks, greatly appreciated!

  • @BicenMaths

    @BicenMaths

    3 жыл бұрын

    So D1 is known for being quite time consuming and methodical, but easy to make errors. Not as much problem solving on the whole, but of course it is still there. You have to be a systematic type thinker who makes few mistakes in your working to be successful. You needn’t know anything about computer science, and yes, it is quite different to all the other fields of maths! D1 sounds like it could be a good match for you? I also think FM1 is really really good - it’s just two concepts (energy and collisions) explored in lots and lots of detail - so when it “clicks” it clicks for the whole scope of the module, rather than just one sub section. The students at my school do D1 and FM1 (I teach FM1) and they like the combo! They really enjoy FM1, too. Have a look and see if you can find any textbooks/exam papers for the different modules as they will give you a flavour of what they’re like. This question from you has given me an idea to make a video on it, so I might look at doing this soon too! Thanks!

    Hard to say, but the one I find easiest is mechanics, as it’s the least amount of content but fully explored. D1 is popular, and people usually find it OK. The trouble with these comparisons is most people study/teach just two, so no one has real authority on what is “easier”, especially when it is a huge part down to personal preference! D1 and FM1 is a good choice though! Sorry that there are no definitive answers.
