This is how Wales Wins with the superb Severn Tunnel
Another Vlog from my back catalogue: This one from December 2022 and my 'This is how Wales wins' series:
What did the Victorian's ever do for us.........? Well they built the 'Severn Tunnel' for a start..........
In our route, it is a privilege to be the custodian of a number of engineering marvels. And one such example is the superb 'Severn Tunnel'.
It is important to remember that whilst engineering and construction is a fascinating science, it is being undertaken for a reason - The #severntunnel was built to shorten journey times between South Wales and England, a purpose it still serves today..............
I recently checked-in with the team at Sudbrook Pumping station and recorded a Vlog (Video Blog) on what they do to keep the tunnel operational.
I met John Uppington, the depot manager. John and I started our careers on the same day and in the same railway engineering apprenticeship cohort in Swindon over 32 years ago. We recalled the characters in our year group, many of which still work in the #railwayindustry today. The investment that the railway industry made in a load of 16 year old kids is still paying a dividend today etc.......
John took me to the various extremities of the tunnel system and was able to show me first had what they do every day to prevent the tunnel from being flooded with natural spring water......... I also saw the recently pump refurbishment work completed by Centregreat (thank you to them!).
Ahead of the fix of posts on New Year railway engineering works, enjoy the railway engineering and history lesson that is this Vlog..........
And also ahead of the NY rush, wishing you all a safe and prosperous 2023.......

Great video, went in there many times, started my apprenticeship at Swindon in 1974
This is fascinating. I had no idea this was going on around the main tunnel!
Much of the water formerly went to the St Regis paper mill alongside (now shut) and still does to the Magor Brewery. Railwaymen tend to make it their business to do their business in the Big Spring. Which then goes to make the beer (Stella and Whitbread Light Ale).
Great video. It takes a lot of work to maintain it. I was recently inconvenienced by the tunnel. One day it was flooding, the next it was the overhead cables. I’m wondering if a railway deck was ever thought of being added when they built the second Severn Bridge.
Nice video :)
I've often wondered why the water is pumped to waste as I presume being a spring it is fresh water. Why is the water not used by local industry or the North Bristol region? Water reservoirs cost a mint to construct. Why this waste, someone might pay for it and offset the electricity bill. John

That was my thoughts when I watched it too.
