This is how to make the perfect Tom Collins cocktail

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Need a recipe for a delicious Tom Collins? Want some tips on how to make it perfect? You've come to the right place!!
No list of gin classics would be complete without the Godfather of them all, the Tom Collins. The soda water makes this a perfect afternoon tipple when the sun is out, keeping you hydrated and revitilised.
The classic Tom Collins recipe:
60ml Old Tom gin (a London Dry will also work, it'll just be a little drier)
30ml lemon juice
15ml sugar
Soda water
Lemon twist and cherry
The Tom Collins is built in the glass, so it really is one of the easiest Gin cocktail recipes you can make. All you need is
a Jigger
a Highball glass
and a Bar Spoon
Add all ingredients in glass, filling to about half way with soda. Fill glass completely with ice, stir gently and garnish.
The Tom Collins, a must in any bartenders repertoire
So now you know.

I tried making a Tom Collins using my favorite gin, Tanqueray, and I thought it was just OK. Then I bought a bottle of Old Tom (Hayman's) and tried it the way they made it back in the day. What a difference. I put it in my rotation.

This is my wife's favorite cocktail. I usually use the juice of half a lemon and half a lime. Since we prefer London dry gin, I'll sometimes use a touch more simple syrup, depending on the sourness of the juice.

@@bw7471 100% agreed. The term has been hijacked to include anyone who stands behind a bar and pulls pints. Its like a cook vs a chef. One prepares recipes, the other creates them because they understand the science behind the food, flavours, and balance. Unfortunately, true bartenders are far outnumbered by generic pint slingers, so its hard to find someone who actually knows their craft. 🍷🍸🍹🍺

Good question! I use 1:1 sugar to water. A ‘rich’ 2:1 sugar syrup could definitely work but may take a little tweaking. I actually find rich syrups tend to add more viscosity (which we’re not really looking for here) rather than necessarily much more sweetness.

  • @JasminMiettunen

    @JasminMiettunen

    3 жыл бұрын

As far as I know, daisies are a type of sour. Sours are spirit, citrus and sweetener, but if you use orange liqueur as the sweetener, it's a daisy. Fizz just adds soda water to a sour. Fizz and collins are very similar. Before a big difference was that fizzes included egg white, but now it's optional so the lines are getting blurred. If you forget about the egg white, collins are served in a bigger glass with ice and fizzes in a smaller glass with no ice.

I'll have to do a side-by-side comparison between this version, and I one I put together. When I first decided to try a Tom Collins, the only bottle of gin I had open was a Dutch Jenever, which is a bit sweeter than Old Tom style, so I upped the lemon juice and decreased the syrup from 30 and 50ml to maybe 35 and 45ml. I'll have to see how that compares to the "right" way to make one. :) I was looking for an excuse to get back to gin drinks.

How about a proper "Caipirinha"? Mind you, it is rather complex to assemble, with many secrets and details. But a good caipirinha can almost rival a proper Pisco Sour, the world's greatest drink. Which, by the way, I noticed is quite absent here. Hm... Anything against South America? of course not; it is just too far away from magic Scotland, but those two drinks alone deserve attention.

@@BehindtheBar very tricky... cutting up the lime properly is rather a challenge. and getting the right cachaça is next in line. not the finest oneI shall say. Which, by the way, in my opinion are Tabaroa (from Minas Geraes), Minuca (from São Paulo), and Machado (from Espirito Santo), but those are way too good, and should be drank neat. A good, basic aged cachaça, is ideal for caipirinha. Love your channel.

No, giving a customer the finger is not good, even if you use you social digit, me, I wouldn't mind as long as it was your finger, because, I know any drink you make will be, Dam Good!

So it's a Gin and Soda, rather than tonic, and a cherry to garnish.

I do not want to be offensive. I am an older man and I want you to take that into consideration when you read my comment. Nose rings to me are very distracting. You are a very attractive young woman. You are a very good teacher and have much information that is important to impart. However, I can’t stop looking at your nose ring. It does not add to your beauty, it is a large distraction. Is the ring necessary?

It’s her face why on earth would she change that for you? You are saying who she is and what she likes about herself is wrong. No.. just no..
