This is how the first-gen Taurus was a game changer (Full Documentary)

In this video, we are going to discuss the 1986-1991 first generation Ford Taurus. Believe it or not, the Ford Taurus was quite a radical design when it went on sale in late 1985 as a 1986 model. It went on to influence other cars that came after it.
When the Taurus went on sale, it came available with four trim levels. The “L” was the base model that didn’t come with any fancy options. The MT-5 trim targeted foreign manufacturers, like Honda, and came only with an Inline-4 and a 5-speed stick shift. The GL was the next step up, adding more features and equipment than the “L” and “MT-5” such as power windows and locks. The highest trim level was the LX, which had every option box checked as well as a few features that were unique to it, such as those cornering lamps at the bottom of the bumper and a unique seat design, and the list goes on. The Taurus wagon variant had the same trim level options as the sedan.
The base model “L” and the MT-5 was equipped with the 2.5L HSC inline-4 that cranked out 90 horsepower. If 90-horsepower wasn’t enough, the “L” could be upgraded to a more powerful 3L Vulcan V6 that put out 140 horsepower. This was the same 3L engine that came as standard equipment on GL and LX model cars. Cars with the Vulcan engine used a newly innovated four-speed automatic. Models with the HSC employed a 3-speed automatic. The MT-5 had proved to be a slow seller, but it stuck with the 5-speed manual.
That was just a sample of what we discuss in the video. We'll get you up to speed. So, grab a drink and let's get down to the nitty gritty.

My father had a 1988 Ford Taurus LX. It was so futuristic and very comfortable car. It even had a keypad on the driver’s side door. I did remembered the code from the keypad when my father had the car. The 2nd generation of Ford Taurus wasn’t as comfortable as the 1st generation was. He gotten a 1991 one in white with blue interior.

My parents went from a 1984 Ford Thunderbird to a 1989 Taurus SHO with the JBL Stereo Cassette deck. I'll never forget how disappointed I was when I first saw it...but then my mother took me for a ride in it. WOW!!! That thing FLEW and I fell in love with it. I was always a car guy and did ALL the maintenance on it, oil changes, vacuuming and detailing it, waxing, EVERYTHING I loved it so much. They kept it until 1996 and bought a 1997 Crown Vic LX and I assumed they were trading in the Taurus....only to find out that they kept it their friends house until I got my full license. They kept it hidden for almost 4 months saving it for me. They paid for my first year of my insurance and after that I was on my own and had to pay myself. It wasn't a problem because I had been working at Canada Post since I was 14 and would be there every morning at 5am sorting oversize mail and parcels until 815am and then I'd take the bus to be at school for 8:45am and class started at 9am so I had LOTS of money saved up. My parents ALWAYS had that car Oil Guarded every year because where I live they use Liquid Salt on the road and that car never had a spec of rust on it. Sadly, New Years Eve of 2010 I was at a friends house and my car was parked on the side of the road and CRASH!! Some drunk jagoff in a jacked up Ford F250 Diesel 4X4 was doing doughnuts and lost control smashing into my car. I heard this guy flying up and down the road and told my friends that I NEED to move my car but they laughed and said "he's one block up, he's not coming this far". I was devastated when I came outside and saw the damage because he hit the front end so hard it smashed the windshield and I could see the entire front was bent....no fixing that. I had that car from the day I could drive alone...14 years of memories of dates, hotboxes with buddies, trips to "rescue" friends...all GONE! I do however have a LOT of pictures though. Polaroid pictures of the speedometer pegged at 220km/h, me driving it while smoking a cigarette, some girls on the back "skiing" in 2003...along with me doing the same while one of them hold in the plate and another holing the wheel LOL. My "party" days are LONG GONE 12-15 years ago BUT...WOW....I've NEVER had as much fun as I did with that car! Also I never changed the JBL Stereo; there was no point because it had a Sub and I just kept making tapes for it. Great video man....got me misty eyed about that car!!

Ford actually prototyped the new aero design with the 1983 Thunderbird/Cougar and pushed the aero design even further with the Lincoln Mark VII's first in production American composite headlamp design. With the Mark VII, Ford actually had to get an exemption from the current headlight rules from the DOT, which previously only allowed sealed beam or halogen headlights in standard round or rectangular shapes. Ford actually had conventional headlamp buckets for regular headlights for the Mark VII and Taurus/Sable just in case the request for the exemption was denied. Luckily, Ford got the exemption, and the rest is automotive history. To this day, the 3.0L/3.2L SHO engine is a mechanical marvel of engineering and truly a work of art. Thanks for the great video!

Thanks for watching. Yeah we discussed how the Ford Motor Company had to request authorization from the NHTSA to use (composite headlamps) in the MK VII. And good point about the Taurus was going to have sealed beams as a back up. Would’ve incorporated that point into the video but it was already long enough. Thanks again.

Very good. I liked the inside information I was not aware of. I recall the Sable LTS that never happened. The 1988 Lincoln Continental was spun off the Taurus/Sable platform. I hope that will be in your part 2. I remember the impact these cars had and how big it was too. I know it sent GM and Chrysler scrambling. I know the Audi 5000 was out back then. There are debates about who did it first between Ford and Audi. I preferred the Sable myself. I recall the debut commercials on December 26th, 1985. They used the Temptations song Get Ready. Very good video and information. I do not know how you get the information. I also can tell you the light bar front end appeared on the Pontiac Grand Prix sedan. That iconic look made its way through the Ford and Mercury lineup. Thank you for the great job.

What’s poppin? Thanks for watching as always. Yeah many argued that Ford copied Audi, I was going to put that in but the vid was already long enough. And that’s also true about the Lincoln Continental. The Sable kinda pioneered the light bar trend since the Grand Prix sedan didn’t get its own till the ‘91 refresh. As far as the info, I work in the auto industry and know a lot of “insiders” haha. Catch you on the next one.

The 86 taurus was a game changer for the American market. Although it wasn't a groundbreaking design seeing as the Audi 5000 that came out before the taurus did, also had a similar shape, it was groundbreaking for American automotive companies and spelled the end of the malaise era.

Awesome video! What a lot of people ignore from this and other design success stories is how it’s the process, not some random moment of genius, that produces exceptional results. You could see where the rising stars in Ford were coming from in their previous attempts, much like Lee Iacocca’s revival of Chrysler, the turnaround at Harley Davidson, Jeff Katzenberg and Michael Eisner’s efforts at Disney, etc. What made them successful was a focus on the customer’s needs first, and then taking things one step beyond into areas customers wouldn’t necessarily think would be wants. Getting rid of all the impediments blocking innovation and asking “dumb questions” is functionally what you have to do to be successful.

The Tylenol Taurus is possibly the ugliest sedan ever sold

Did anyone making these comments ever own one of these? Very cheap built car; I remember Ford bragging how they were making 20 percent more per car on the Taurus, than the other manufacturers. Of course they were; they were the first to start using cheap Chinese metal. Thanks to the Taurus, that's why cars are built like crap now; the other manufacturers had to do the same to be competitive. I thought these cars were hideous looking; and what a cheap looking interior

You’re right. We mentioned the quality was improved over the Granada, but the Taurus/Sable wouldn’t be perfect. At the time, it had daring styling, and that’s why it sold in droves. Reliability wise, I dunno. They sold well over a million units by 1989, but we see very few, if any surviving examples these days. I knew several 1st gen owners and they had suffered from transmission failures or gasket problems (with the Essex V6) prior to 100k miles.
