Hey Horse Lovers! This video was fun to make and I also want to add a few more things. I want to start by saying I didn’t come from money and that everything I built I did myself! No one in my family is/was an equestrian. I spent my whole life getting to this point. My point in this video is to show you that yes it’s expensive but you CAN do this! You have to be creative, logical, passionate, and work hard but you can do it ❤. Also, of course everyone’s situation is going to be different and geography makes a difference too! These are just my expenses for my farm in Michigan. My goal is to educate and show the truths behind the horse industry. Enjoy ❤

One of the bravest things a horse owner can do is add up the expenses! At 12 yrs old, we had a 4H project that required us to chart expenses for 1 yr. After my Dad and I recovered from the initial heart attack, I secretly vowed to never be so accurate again and my Dad quickly dissolved his financial input. The horse industry turns its wheels on the labor of the working student, doesn’t it? And it makes us better for it. Meanwhile, I've had horses for 51 years. And my parents, who are in their 80's, are still waiting for me to give up my childhood fantasy and get a "real" life. LoL. Hard work that can almost defeat you, tears, joy, a spirited soul connection that is unexplainable, a soft muzzle touching at the hairs on the back of your neck, the thunder that you hear and feel as they fly across the field...the stare of a wise old sage who has shared your life for 36 years... It's a privilege that I'm allowed to be their human. And that, my friends, is priceless.

There’s only so much money to go around, no matter your circumstance. My horse is my happy place and that is why I choose to focus my financial resources there. I used to work at a horse stud and part of my job was getting all 25 horses out and holding them for the farrier on different days. He used to chat a lot about the different horses' feet, the problems they had, and what he was doing in the trim to fix them. I decided after a few years to try trimming my own horses' hooves myself. I'm so glad I did. The money I've saved with doing my own horses feet over the last 10 years is very substantial. I also help out other people if they're in need of a trim and can't get a farrier for whatever reason. I'm not strong enough to do it as a professional job, my limit is about 2 horses per day. It's a skill anyone can learn if they have reasonable physical health

What a terrific video. Thank you for sharing the real life cost of horse stewardship. Cost was why I had to Re home my beloved Appaloosa many years ago as a young adult. He went to the woman who was riding him as a lesson horse. I gave lessons on him to help pay his board and she fell in love with him. She was his perfect forever Mom. That was thirty five years ago and I’m crying right now remembering him loading into the trailer. 😢He was my Jiminy ♥ Speaking of Jiminy, thank you for showing Jiminys composite shoes. My Mingo would have benefited from them. He was outfitted (back in the day) with lightweight custom shoes with leather pads as he was prone to stone bruising. You oversee an incredible and beautiful working horse farm and it’s astonishing how you do this, alone with your Husband. Your horses are so fortunate to have you both ♥♥♥♥

Your honesty in explaining the expenses involved in running your farm is so refreshing and absolutely eye-opening. Many years ago, I had a horse only because my daughter also rode and was willing to share the expense, otherwise, it would never have happened. Since then I have known many people buy a horse or horses and then sell them on with hardly a thought when they realize the work and cost involved. Horses deserve better than that and I think you have a strong ethic to produce a good horse before deciding to part company with it.

I owned two horses - back to back - for 35 years. I had to pay board each month which covered their feed (hay, grain, any supplements supplied), bedding/ labour to clean the stall daily, turnout and of course some of that money would be used toward general maintenance of the facilities that I and my horse used like barn and arena upkeep, fencing upkeep, pasture upkeep (over seeding, mowing, and the like), winter snow removal on the entry laneway, surrounding barn areas, etc. In addition to all that, add on vet and farrier care, which was billed separately, directly to me, and anything I haven't thought of ! Of course any tack purchase / repair, for my own use, was up to me. Any horse blankets used on my horses supplied by me, too. And the repair of same when they play, and try to rip them off each other !! LOL Liability / health insurance for the horse ( colic surgery, if needed - that sort of thing. It does NOT cover regular 'maintenance care' like vaccines, deworming, etc.) The boarding cost would include a bit of money for labour/their time to the owner, which is of course, fair. For the last few years of horse ownership I was in a co-op where the horse owners took turns with the feeds, bringing in the horses, turning them out again, etc. We each cleaned our own stalls, so it was a bit cheaper, but you're burning gas to get to the farm, and taking time out of your day - after working a full time job ! - to do that, too, still comes into consideration. So - bottom line - the 'cheapest thing' about owning a horse IS the initial money, just to buy it ! It's 'all the rest' that soon adds up ! And for anyone who used to say to me " You must be rich, you own a horse ? " Actually it's the exact opposite ! I was 'poor' because I owned horses, since SO much of my money goes TO the care /upkeep of that beloved equine ! A matter of perspective, I guess. :)

I hear you on how much it all ads up for. I have one retired TB as backyard horse that I just do hand work with it is quite the expense for a "pet". He's an easy keeper, barefoot, only "routine" vet care (teeth, annual exam, shots, fecal) and we already had the barn on our property. But still, fencing for our pasture and paddocks, running water to the barn were a big initial expense to a having him at home. Then the expense of hay, grain, bug spray, first aid supplies, vet and farrier visits really ad up fast. Good thing I love him to pieces.

Great video on educating horse lovers into the REAL costs of owning a horse/horses. To be included are your and Kyle's labor costs, i.e. individualized training per horse, daily barn chores (in summer heat and freezing cold), 24-hr horse care if/when needed, analyzing proper nutrition for each horse, labor for repairs, (security?), etc! While it's done out of love, your and Kyle's time/labor is worth tons. If you weren't doing it yourselves, someone else would need to be paid to do the same. Have oftentimes wondered where you get all your energy! 😅

Enjoyed this video way back in rhe early 70s-80s I started training horses, there was a book I got as a very young teenager calked a Horse of your own, itvwas written by a very well known horse trainer, in the book it explained everything you touched on from how much land you needed for one horse to feed, vets, farrier, tack both western and English, as well training fees. When I started training and students after taking lessons wanted a horse I would loan my book to parents and students. Her rule of thumb back then was $60,000. To own a horse that included cost of horse. In todays costs I would have to say at least $100,000. For a singlr horse at home with pasture etc. I too still train horses and board clents horses as well as my own, for a total of 25 horses , on 300 acres ( grow my own hay) staff. Etc. Your costs are spot on. I too use older trucks even Semi tractors to pull my 9 horse trailer to shows. The high cost of fuel is a new factor. Keep up the good work love your channel, and yes I am old 70 infact

First thing . . . I LOVE that top you are wearing! I would choose that in a heart beat. Looks wonderful on you too, really brings out the beautiful blue in your eyes. Anyway. . . Reading many of the comments, they say it all. So it's all about what you love for sure. Vet bills, we just spent several thousand to give our elderly dog whom we had since he was a tiny sick puppy, some extra time to live with some comfort. He had a aggressive mouth cancer and without radiation treatment, he would not have been able to eat or drink. It gave him another 2 and half months and it was worth every penny for us. He had a very long , happy life, doing things most dog's dont get to do. But, it was very hard to say goodbye. Regarding your channel, it will only continue to grow I am sure, bringing in additional income. We will all be there cheering you and Kyle on!

I trained some and occasionally did lessons for friends. I enjoy staying in the horse world through people like you, who are wise and responsible.

Truck buying is insane right now. We just bought a used truck for our farm to haul a gooseneck horse trailer. We had to cross the whole state into the next one to find a good working Ford truck we could afford that wasn’t lifted or deleted, and it still is slightly lifted due to the stock 4x4 which we need because the drive is a soggy mess a lot of the year. Everything out there, and I’m talking USED here, is over $50k &/or is tricked out for the suburban commandos. Just endless rows of Rangers and f150s and dozens of people fighting over the five regular reasonable non-rusted super dutys available. Had a couple sold 15 minutes before we arrived after driving three hours to get there. Was exhausting.

I see the love you have for them. I like your mission in helping horse's in rehabbing and rehoming when the time is right. I want to say that I'm proud of you for all the hard work you have put into you're business and I'm glad that you have such a wonderful husband who loves horse's to. I just have to say.....Shae you are amazing!! You are so honest and humble about it all 💜 I don't know of ANYONE who would open up their books to the public. Your honesty overwhelmed me. All your costs really overwhelmed me, I know it's costly, because I've done it, just not on your scale. I've never seen someone who truly loves their animals as much as you, I've never seen anyone actually put in all the hard work, like you (and Kyle, cause he's a huge help) but so many just hire it out, which is nice if you can afford that. But when you hire it out, it takes away from the actual bond with your horses (do you understand what I'm trying to say?) All the bathing, grooming, stuff like that, takes away from the bonding experience. (Obviously my opinion) but if you walk out of your house in the morning and all the chores are already done for you, like feeding, mucking stalls, cleaning up, and your horse is standing there groomed, saddled and ready to go... I just think your missing out on a great one on one relationship with your horse or in your case horses 😉. I just have so much admiration for you Shae 💜. Ok, I'm rambling, I'm sorry, I just so love and appreciate the woman you are! Thanks for this eye 👀 opening experience. Horses are not cheap, if taken care of properly. And that's definitely you my dear. Loved this video. Love and Blessings always ❤️🙌 Jennifer
