This has been one of the most gratifying revelations of my entire art journey. I spent most of my time in school doodling geometric shapes and block stick figures, simply because I was bored and didn't know how to draw anything better than little pyramids, cubes, cylinders, and whatnot. Now I'm discovering that I accidentally spent about 10,000 hours practicing a fundamental skill I can use to draw just about anything. It's like finding a huge crate of money buried under the floorboards of a rickety old cottage you were about to sell.

When I started learning drawing I used to make as detailed as possible art eventually. Now, that I am maturing further into the art, I came to realize that simplicity and basics is the heart of any art. Thanks for sharing this!

Constructive education is a habit-forming process. This is what I do, because I purposely make constructions to teach myself to do geometry and work in three-dimensional space. Which is a lot of fun for me because it's kind of problem solving. Also silhouette vs construction. Sometimes I use a quick silhouette to mark where the construction should lie. All this is very fun because it teaches discipline and teaches the Artist to realize that the Art Process has steps. So an Artist should not rush. Just take your time and have fun learning the steps in constructing your structure. It is almost like you are constructing a house or a building. The same principle applies to living bodies (bio-meshes). It first starts in geometry and then goes into soft shapes just like in 3D where you smooth out your initially rough geometric shapes.

This is why it's easier to draw something after you've sculpted it and easier to sculpt something after you've drawn it. It's not a paradox. Your brain is working on converting between 2D and 3D

Take it from someone who learnt how to draw anime art: I cannot stress anymore how damn crucial learning the fundamentals are. I unfortunately skipped out on most, the exception being perspective but I never fully applied it. This ended up causing my drawings to look off and not dynamic at all. However yesterday I made a massive breakthrough, and can now draw boxes in all angles, and other various simple forms. Seriously, learn shapes before waifus, man.

I only learned this recently. Tip for anyone interested, try to use 3d modelling software e.g. Blender as a basic reference. I imported a free model and added some basic lighting and I now have a good reference for almost any pose. This could help until you can make your own proportioning

That's one of the reasons I'm focusing on doodling more in digital forms. You can use layers in applications like Aseprite or GIMP so your simple shapes are on a lower level and the details are drawn on higher levels.

It isn't so hard as it seems, just try to be careful of pressing so much the pencil at the paper, also many details of the examples shared in this video aren't obligatory (like the shadows or the lines used at cylinders) the only reason for using shapes is to understand what you're doing, you could only use points for the vertices of some blocks
