    I love the diversity here and the culture. I love all the outdoor events here from festivals, celebrations on the river, hiking in the hill country, renting a cabin alongside the lakes, to bat watching. I love knowing that more jobs and economic growth is coming soon and can’t wait to see this city be the most unique major city.

    Mr. Booming Houston is a grimy, "wish I could be New York" type of city. Among many things along with Houston traffic, Austin still wins. Everything balanced. Not too big not too small.

  • @Brewzerr

    @Brewzerr

    5 жыл бұрын

    Jim E - “wish I could be New York”? Uh... NO. Houston may be a lot of things, but a wanna-be NYC is definitely not one of them. At least not anymore than Austin wishes it could be San Francisco. Let’s not kid ourselves here. Neither Houston nor Austin are even close to what either city cracks themselves up to be. And sorry, but Austin’s traffic is easily worse than Houston’s. Austin has more natural beauty than Houston for sure, but your city still has some serious problems (as does Houston). Neither city should be casting stones at the other.

    @catothewiser I hope you realize that the stuff you're talking about happens in every major city. I've lived in Austin for about 7 years or so, and I've never been robbed, vandalized, etc... Austin has one of the lowest crime rates in the country, and most of those crimes are low level. For a city of its size, Austin is very safe. Comparing it to a "third world country"... that's waaay out of proportion.

    Austin is certainly pretty city love all the new buildings. But it doesn't have as much of the thick urban grit that you find in San Antonio, Houston or Dallas.

    Austin is unique not supposed to be like San Anto, or Dallas or any other city in Texas. One of the reason it is always ranked in the top cities in the US. Austin culture is different. I have lived in a few cities in the US, my favorite other the Austin was DC.

  • @Brewzerr

    @Brewzerr

    And Houston, Dallas, and especially San Antonio don’t have anywhere near the amount of ‘thick urban grit’ that most Northeastern, Midwestern, and West coast cities do. Houston may have a few small areas that come kind of close, but overall you’re just not going to find that level of urbanity anywhere in Texas. All the major Texas cities are overwhelmingly suburban and sprawly in nature. I’ve spent a lot of time in all 4 cities, and personally I can’t really tell the difference between any of them unless I’m right in the middle of their respective cores.

  • @Brewzerr

    @Brewzerr

    5 жыл бұрын

    Raymond Alvarado - Sorry to burst your bubble, but whatever unique local flavor Austin once had is almost completely gone now. Today’s Austin much more closely resembles the Dallas and Houston of yesteryear than most Austinites are comfortable admitting to. In the last 20 or so years, Austin has become so corporatized, gentrified, sprawled out, traffic-congested, overpriced, and watered down compared to what it used to be. You’re right though... it was never supposed to become that, but it has happened. Now, if only Austin could add some of the diversity and urban character that Dallas and Houston have. As for San Antonio, well... I think they may now have Austin beat in the ‘unique local charm’ category. San Antonio has actually been smart about planning a few steps ahead of their growth and preserving their local flavor. The only thing all that “top cities in the U.S.” ranking hype nonsense has accomplished is to attract a certain element to Austin (in droves) that has crushed and continues to crush the city’s once-unique character. Austin was a MUCH better place to live when it was still Texas’ best kept secret. There’s just no stuffing that genie back in the bottle.

    Austin looks like way more modern than San Jose, where everyone knows is center of Silicon Valley. I've heard of brutal crimes frequently happening in Austin, but I'm not sure if this information is legit. But in overall, this city has better management, especially the downtown, than my current place, San Jose.

    OAT351 maybe I misunderstand. It should be Houston where known as crimes not Austin. I haven't been in Texas before so I usually mess up the names of the big cities there. Thank you for correcting my points anw.

    If you think Austin is extremely expensive you're not very well traveled city wise. It's one of the cheapest city I've seen. I'm moving there from Vegas, the difference in grocery price alone is amazing.

  • @Brewzerr

    @Brewzerr

    5 жыл бұрын

    I’ll agree with ‘expensive’, but Austin really isn’t even half as liberal as people make it out to be. Maybe it’s ‘liberal’ by Texas standards, but that’s not saying much. Compared to actual majority-liberal cities like San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, D.C., Los Angeles, etc... Austin is actually much more centrist/moderate. I personally found the inner loop part of Houston to be a few steps to the left of Austin. Even certain parts of Dallas could give Austin a run for it’s money on that end. I think the reason everyone makes this big ordeal about Austin being some kind of heavy liberal bastion is because Austinites are always tooting their horn about it. “Oh look at us. We’re so ‘weird’, kooky, and liberal! Keep Austin weird, blah-blah”. I was pretty disappointed with Austin’s level of ‘weird’ and liberal during my years spent living there. However, yes... compared to places like Waco, Lubbock, and Tyler... Austin is definitely liberal.

    Congress avenue bat bridge. The Domain, I-Fly, Lakeline, Samsung factory tours, Tarrytown lakeside, Formula 1 racetrack, Tarrytown regattas, South-by-Southwest exposition, lower crime ratings, lower poverty, better schools, Round Rock and Pflugerville water parks nearby. Superior barbecue, police and fire departments. Better news sources. Amazon's main base of operations for Texas in Austin ensures daily minimal delivery times. Better city management- I don't recall Austin attempting to ban Chick-Fil-A from the city airport... San Antonio is a tourist town- that's all it's got going for it. Austin is a real town with major tech and military connections with countless job opportunities.
