what makes it for me is the surrealism. its totally unlike any other show because its not fantasy its totally based in reality, and you can relate to everything. but then completely out of left field, something physically impossible will happen in a way that is so seamless, it makes it appear possible in their reality - for example the invisible car gag. its a totally new form of humor to me but i love it! when is season 3?!?

Tomy Rottman was gonna say the same thing. Surrealism, at least how we use the term in popular culture, is based around the subconscious and dreams, while Magic Realism is based in reality with strange and fantastical elements
Holy shit that editing. You have serious skill

Atlanta just started airing in the UK I'm so excited an a massive Glover fan this just made me even more hyped
I sincerely believe this show is overlooked for how much thought goes into the writing process. Each episode just leaves me pondering about the message they may be trying to convey. This may be the only show that I truly empathize with the characters because their problems are actually real and they are just trying to get by like everyone else.
I watch ONE Community reunion table reading and now my KZread feed is loaded with Donald Glover related content.... Jesus. I KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM NOW! How do you stop auto-play?! FUUU -

How I wish they made that damn movie and that Troy made at least a simple cameo. DO IT NOW!!!
The first time I saw Atlanta it felt like a short story by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (to me, Atlanta is more 'Realismo Magico' than surrealism), Garcia Marquez was influenced by Kafka, Joyce, Faulkner, Woolf and Hemingway. The cinematography is really really powerful and without it the show wouldn't work,. That's why Hiro and Donald are artist that deserve the recognition, they let their art speak for them, no explanation needed, they start the conversation. Good work with the clip btw. Cheers

Mario Andrei Pantoja Maguiña Atlanta is exactly the kind of realismo mágico style based in America. Very good description. It's not what's happening, it's how people react and lube through it, their tractions and lifestyle around the subject.

That edit at the beginning though
As an immigrant to the US, certain social commentary that's found in Atlanta I pick up on very well. At other times there are overlapping situations that go at the heart of the human condition in dealing with other humans, the quirks and habits shown in the show are also present in my home country (in eastern europe) so I get some serious deja vu when I see the mindset portrayed so well in a tv show. On top of that I am figuring out the layers of social commentary regarding race relations, american history and the rest... there are mad lessons in each episode and it might take me a few viewings to pick up on everything they are showcasing.
Awesome analysis! Haven't watch Atlanta yet, but now I am interested thanks to this video. Sweet editing man!

That episode freaked me tf out. I think it kind of showed how black men are still held captive and persecuted in America. And the scary reality that violence and pain really do create amazing art. The weirdest part to me is how they just neglected to talk about it after. I guess for viewers to formulate their own opinions but also to show how in the life of a black man in the US that is normal just on a less severe level
@emekaisyourfriend

from what i remember, it was the michael jackson episode. the pressure of being a black male entertainer in the US and how that manifests in the denial of one's blackness in order to get closer to whiteness. also, the relationships that men have with their sons caused by that pressure and the subsequent experience of trauma that gets passed on and inherited. my favourite episode from a near flawless tv show.

Atlanta, the boondocks and south park are all genius. Unlike every other show on TV they're willing to take chances or be different. There are other good shows but only a handful of great ones in the last 30 years or so.

I just understood the metaphor behing why he was running so frantically at the end of this is America. "As all of the tragedy and disaster become normalized, DG is literally running away from that ideology, protesting the "new normal". " NB: the desaster are represented by the peopke running after him.

Atlanta is the only reason I still watch anything on tv. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen, hands-down.
Really just a great analysis, literally I was waiting for you to see surrealism, Atlanta is one of the only shows influenced by Twin Peaks that actually takes that surrealistic energy and disperses it through their season the right way, hiro and Glover are like lynch and frost
i would love to see a full video of this America with Atlanta Fx series footage

Atlanta is more accurate than people think. Dope boys and college level blacks come from the same place and your world always crossed based on who’s in your family.
ur so smart
As was said before, I think the work is closer to magical realism than to surrealism. Good video though.
