I've got the MS70CDR and the best part about these pedals is that they can be flashed to custom firmware which allows you to add whichever effects you want to within the limitations of the onboard memory from any of the Zoom Multistomp lines, and the 70CDR is stereo I/O unlike the others.

@@mohitrahaman - The Iridium tones are better. (price tag is also much higher) The Zoom is noticeably less quality in their models, but the overall experience with a large quantity of effects and user interface, is the best you can get for $120! Now, what I did was get the Iridium for your tones, and run it through a Zoom MS-70CDR that has just the effects, if you can afford to do that.) That’s a nice rig for the money, and only 2 units!

I have 2 of these and they are insanely good not just for the price but good period. The key to really utilizing these pedals to their full capacity is to use the Zoom Effects Manager and the ZoomTone Lib applications that are free downloads, they connect to your computer via usb. This way you can completely customize the pedals to be exactly how you want them to work for you. I delete a bunch of effects I don't use or need and that gets rid of clutter. I then setup the effects in order as to what is most used for me A-Z. You can save files of presets so it is easy to restore different setups. I basically have both setup primarily for the time based and mod effects. This is where they shine IMO. Some of the Delays are insanely good as are the Chorus and Reverb effects. I have a closet of standard stomp boxes which still have their place but having one of these on your board allows you to have almost anything at your fingertips. At first I was a little frustrated but after an hour or so the lightbulb goes off and then they become easy as any standard stomp box to tweak.

I do have an MS-50G. I use it on my analog pedalboard to fill in a few effect gaps in my signal chain. My first experience with digital multi-effects units were the ZOOM 9002 and ZOOM 9010 back in the early to mid 90's. ZOOM were way ahead of the pack.

I've had this since it came out an it's a fantastically useful pedal. First, you can order the pedals in whatever order you want,it's stereo in and out, the Detune is great as are a couple of the studio type compressors. Let alone having the immediate tuner. You can often pay $100 or way more just for a tuner! Someone said it needed tap delays finction, but it does thave that too by changing what the tap switch does. Look at page 18 in the manual for how to do that. Edit- I forgot about the noise gate and stupidly bought one before remembering/realizing the Zoom has an excellent one built in, so another one for the buy and sell.

For the better part of 2 years I've settled on using the ZOOM G6 Multi Effects pedal as my main effects pedal for effects. I connect it using the 4 Cable method to my amps and run it with modelling off and as my all in one pedalboard. It even takes boosts/overdrives really good when running before the input of the amp! I've seen these and have flirted with the idea of using one but decided to build my pedal board of indivual stompboxes as an alternative to the all in one effects of the G6 but these are really really cool and a no brainer for the price!

I have one and it is paired with an EHX headphone amp. In the winter, when my music "room" is too cold to heat, I play this and enjoy it wired into a small JBL bluetooth speaker. For quite a long time I have had a Zoom MS-70CDR pedal (along with a Mooer Ocean Machine), to patch into the FX Loops on my Line 6 Helix, simply to add things that are still not available on the Helix - example: DigiTech RV-7 (Lexicon) Reverse Reverb setting. Great fun, and inexpensive bit of gear for absolutely anyone, not just those on a budget. Lots of synth players use this Zoom stuff.

Welcome to the rabbit hole! These pedals are great. I have two MS-50G's on my board -- one for dry effects, the other for wet -- plus a blender pedal to mix dry/wet however I like. This arrangement gives even more flexibility, such as EQ'ing the wet effects separately, etc. I find that I can dial in just about any sound I want, given enough time. You really have to spend the hours to dial in your effect chains. But I guess that's true with analog pedals as well.

One of these passed through on a bulk trade once but I didn't pay it much mind - flipped it. The Zoom MS-70CDR - however - has found its way onto many iterations of my pedalboards - back when I was gigging. For a guitar player on a budget, the bang-for-the-buck aspect of the CDR is almost unbeatable. No amp modeling - but a great catalog of effects for about $100'ish. High function/low real estate pedal. Surprisingly good pedal.

The MS50G is my back up “pedal board”. I have a few patches that it cycles through. Basically a rhythm, a lead and an ambient. It is a GREAT pedal. My normal board is a JHS pulp n peel v4, HX stomp (reverb, delay, mod, amp/IRs), boss sy200, boss rc5. It’s amazing that a $120 pedal can act as a viable replacement that 99% of the people listening wouldn’t even know the difference.

It’s always a good day when a great player discovers these little gems! The MS-70 has been a staple Swiss Army knife pedal on all my rigs for years now and at this point I couldn’t live without it. I tend to keep mine in the cycle preset mode, with about 15 presets saved. Since I use the very subtle and musical ZNR noise reduction, I keep every second preset a blank with just that subtle gate on it. Then every alternate preset is an effect or chain of effects that all start with the ZNR as well (mostly particle verb based pads, extra delays, Leslie/mod sounds etc). That way every press of the switch cycles me back to a ‘clean’ preset, and as long as I don’t save too many I can navigate them easily enough since they start over once you reach the end of your list. It’s the perfect compliment to any rig where you’ve got your favourites doing the heavy lifting and just need ‘fill in the blank’ once in a while!

Also (since I’m already gushing on this pedal anyways), while I’d say this thing excels at ambience and combining effects, some of the normal stuff is great too. The Tremolo, CE-1 emulation, Vibrato (really nice), Univibe, Tape Echo, reverse delay (with full wet mix, low repeats, super slow tap subdivision) and many other delays and verbs are all perfectly useable to stellar. The thing that puts it over the top is getting two effects with different tap tempo values on the same switch. My El Cap stopped working once and while it was getting fixed I simply set up a patch with two tape echos in series and set the first to 16th note tap, and the second to dotted 8th with a longer repeat. In a pinch I had my galloping Hank Marvin delay. Even some of the amp sims on the 50g are perfectly good (especially the Fender Twin). If you turn off the cab sims and use IRs they are way better than they have any business being! Plus there’s a hack now that lets you put any effect or amp sim from one model into any other - ie amp and cabs into the MS-70 and certain fancy reverbs from the 70 into the 50g etc. All that, plus a useable tuner and the mighty particle reverb, and there’s no reason every guitarist shouldn’t have one around. I’d even argue that at 40 bucks used, the older, cheap plastic Zoom G1on (which is essentially an MS-50 in plastic with an added headphone amp and drum machine synced to a looper) is a far superior practice tool to just about any modern modelling device!

The best way to use these is with some of the community made software. There are patch editors and software which let's you port effects from other Zoom pedals, and hacks to compress the effect files to store more on the device at once. I have a board with the stryfecta, compadre, riverside, deco and iridium (all midnight). It is an amazing pedal board. I play weekly leading worship at church, but this pedal is what I use either as a backup, or for outdoor services (battery powered). If I could only have only one pedal, this is it. The MS50 is seriously underrated. I can get tones comparable to what I have with my $3500 Strymon board. I always recommend this to someone playing on a budget. Perfect first pedal to introduce people to effects, and you never outgrow it.

The Fender clean DI is pretty average but all in all its a great swiss army knife. And it will last a gig on batteries. Not all Zoom FX are equal, I swear by the A3 for my Weissenborn live, built like a tank but it's a head nip to navigate. I also have a G6 which is good but it's no Helix or Keeper. In fact, I just moved my Helix LT back downstairs, so I’ll be using the multi stomp upstairs now. Also, did you update the firmware to the latest version? A couple years back, they added more effects and amps, bringing the total to around I think 170 instead of the 130 that’s listed on the original box. Lastly, I find the best software editor to use with this pedal is the free ToneLib Zoom editor. Definitely try these ideas out.

I had the 9030 half rack unit back in ‘91… I was sold on it by flipping thru the “demo” settings… I never could quite figure out how to get it to work with an amp without sounding like bees scraping nails on a chalkboard, but thru headphones it was glorious. I recall some effects were ahead of their time (your guitar could say “yaah yaah yaah” lol). I know some big artists used them back in the day…. Cool stuff!

Corby keep this an play with it. Dont line out into a amp put it on stack. I use this like a power section on my board with my pedals running into the fender vibro amp or the marshall model. I have some compressers an things going but ill keep my settings to myself. It takes pedals soooo well i get frustrated my kemper cant do same. I couldnt live without one. The only drawback is that you have to sequentially scroll through the presets, so you can’t have too many otherwise you have to press the pedal how ever many times to get back to the regular setting you use. It is possible to set the same preset multiple times so you could set your standard tone every 3rd or 4th one, but it can be a nuisance. Midi control would be handy. Thanks again John for your insights and wonderful playing.

The Revo-1 amp & cab was the best metal amp selection Zoom ever put out, from looking around I don't see it in this little pedal. This particle verb are nice but it seems to be its star pedal only. The money shot for Zoom would be to create a duel 2 - DSP 48khz sampling rate, 128x oversampling converter and filter with 110-119db dynamic range mid size pro modeler, perhaps slightly bigger than the HX Stomp. Putting as many amp & cabs models as possible and include the Revo-1! A guitar modeler that's affordable and powerful for beginner, intermediate or pro level players across the board. If Zoom does that they will take a huge lions share of the guitar modeler market. There's too many young players coming in who are phenomenal players tier level guitar modelers and 44.1khz will get left behind. Everyone does guitar videos these days this is not audio track studio anymore, players want the best sound to be in their video compilations and that can only be achieved with 48khz sample rate frequency and superior dynamic audio range. Right now I see Nux leading the way since there's are the most affordable.

This is a terrific pedal for how cheap it is. I really wonder why Line 6 never made a competitor to this in their helix line. I have two of these. Also great tuner option when you’re playing on a stage with bright sunlight and LED’s aren’t visible. I use it on my acoustic rig regularly with a few saved presets I can cycle through.

My answer is quite simple: Helix (and so Fractal, Kemper, Neural dsp, Strymon etc.) has no interest in competing with Zoom in this market. It would be quite embarassing for them to admit that a pedal produced from 2012 (!) is not so different, qualitatively, from what they sell now 10x the price...

In the past I wouldnt even bother looking at a digital pedal. Source Audio changed that with their original Bass Envelope Filter. The only reason I finally sold it is because I bought their Spectrum Filter which is on a whole other level. Havent tried a Zoom yet but a lot of bass players use the B series pedals.

Thanks for the great review and playing again John! Do you happen to still have the device? I've seen a demo with external ir and it shows surprisingly good results showing the amps are actually really good and it's the integrated cab sims that don't make it justice.. Wish you great inspiration ! Wood make a great video

I've got an MS70CDR and use it for all sorts of things, not just guitar. Lots of interesting and wacky/quirky effects. hahahah i knew you'd say particle reverb and ice delay. they're good! i use it and run synths or drums in to it. i can see otehr comments have already mentioned that you can put custom firmware to get all effects. the ms70cdr doesnt have the amps and cabs but all the effects. including compressors eqs etc and more effects. also signal chai makes total sense. thats how it is on the pedalboard. right to left usually.

Oh, had one of those, I’m no picky pedal guy so to rate it’s modeling sound and such would be dumb on my part, it did what I wanted at the time. I used zoom acoustic pedals too. I liked them and those who I have played music with and for couldn’t tell any diff from my hi end pedals. Hi end stuff is for YOU, not your average listener.

The 'Roller' fx is handy. It's a delayed pitch vibrato, which only comes in on sustained notes or chords, so can work similar to a 'trem' arm unit, on guitars which don't have them.

The amp models sound better with their cab sims turned OFF in my view... The multistomp shines at low gain anyway. If I'm plugging into the front of my amp adding an amp sim is pointless anyway. Just let the real amp be itself and tone shape with EQ such like. I like to put my own overdrives in front and amp behind and let the zoom take care of the rest.

I had one of those. It is really cool and does a lot, but a Zoom G1on has the same features, is easier to use and costs less. But if you need a smaller form factor the MS-50G may be for you.

I own both of the MS pedals, the 50 and 70. Zoom is criminally underrated. The tones are very real sounding and amp like, as you see demonstrated here! I've recorded entire songs with just the MS-50G straight into my digital recorder. Awesome demo BTW! Also, analog pedals pair very well with this unit, especially things like the Joyo California.

They are underrated but have gone the wrong direction over last few years. These older pedals were good. I have owned most all of them at one point and now only have a G3n as a backup to my helix.

I had one of the other models of the Multistomp - the MS50-CDR I think is what it was called. It had some good sounds in it. I just found it unrealistic to use given the single footsitch interface. I tried using MIDI with it (this was a long time ago, and was my first ever experience with MIDI), but I never got to where I felt it was suited for live use. Of course as a backup, if you can setup a single good tone, and control the rest from your guitar knobs, that should work in an emergency. But an Ampero II Stomp would offer more control and more tonal options if the extra money is doable. I think in this general price range though, I would compare with some of the other options (Mooer, Valeton, and even the newer Boss G1 Four) before committing to one or another.

Also as a side note the latest firmware gives the MS-50G almost all the same time and mod effects of the MS-70CDR so it in many ways makes getting the 70CDR redundant.

When I was in undergrad fro. 2012-2016 I used the big brother of this. It's got great stuff and really work. Most of the amps aren't the best but I loved it for using with a clean amp for pop gigs. The effects are awesome! I would love to see a video of you using this with other pedals. I've had noise issues with mine integrating extra pedals in the mix with it.
