    It seems asal has learned a new trick to block in the back left corner. Keeping his racket at waist height stiffly at a 45° angle to his body to cause enough contact to slow his opponent. A little more discrete than the trailing leg but still very obvious if you notice Makin’a reactions

    this is closer to the mark than a lot of the comments - i’d tone down the second part somewhat: he still lacks judgment and the suspension has not taught him that safety comes first - too bad that his faults in this (critical) area prevent some folks from acknowledging that his talent is astronomical - i wonder if even he recognizes his own talent, because if he did, he might not squander it on these poor judgment calls like the boast straight into Makin

I thought he is maturing and start behaving like a human being. I still thought it is just time and he will go back to his senses and be a normal human. After the celebration this game. I am now convinced that this guy is a hopeless case. He is just an immature crazy child. No respect for the game or opponents. I was rooting for him every time he plays. He is a great talent. • @andrewcutler4599

    Asal had the boast (which he went for), a drop on the left front, or something to the back left. The second two options are attacks but not winners unless quite good. Agree it was just kind of dumb that he went for the boast, but no reason it was bad intent. He just wanted the (reckless) winner. RE refs encouraging this: IMO it should be a let, but obviously if you ask for it some refs will give a no let. Even at the club level some may be annoyed that you don't just take the drop. Kind of a give and take how much we want to punish people for being out of position. Do you need to leave every shot for your opponent open? At least at the lower levels, this is impossible given how loose the play is.

  • @AlastairCunning

    @AlastairCunning

    Жыл бұрын

    @@andrewcutler4599 Mostly agree here. The crucial thing is just how unnecessary the boast is. The opponent only has to provide direct access to the front wall, not indirect access. So playing a dangerous shot indirectly to the front wall is reckless. And he does it A LOT. If I had to guess, the reason he does it, as well as playing lots of leg grazing cross courts, is to intimidate the opponent and subconsciously make them move a little further from the T. It's dark arts stuff. The direct opposite of sportsmanship.

    @5:50 Asal hit Makin with a shot. That should be a stroke to Makin, since Asal was playing a boast, and not a direct shot to the front wall. What was the official call in the game? For those who don't know, Asal just recently got back from a 6-week suspension after hitting Lucas Serme in the head with a very dangerous shot.

  • @clydewardle

    Exactly. Asal said in the interview afterwards that he should/could have had a stroke, but that’s not true. He had a clear line to the whole of the front wall from where he struck the ball. Therefore, the only way he could hit Makin was with a boast, and therefore that could only be a let ball. And the only way to hit Makin with the ball in that situation, given that Asal had a clear view of Makin’s position, is INTENTIONALLY. Dirty player. Still.

    I for one, am glad to see Asal got a 12 week suspension. Hitting your opponent with the ball shows a low club level grade awareness of your obligations toward player safety and game etiquette. The game doesn’t need him on the court.

    He's clearly one of the great modern talents. Still an absolute tool who blocks every rally. Desoukky did the same for so long, asal is a much better player and would have still won if he'd played clean. He was way better today. Shame

    Anyone commenting that Asal hitting Makin was unintentional is missing the point. The shot is "risky", i.e., there is a high chance Asal will hit Makin, despite his skill level, and his attempts not too. Which is what happened. This is why you have safety lets, and call a let when there is a "chance" you may hit your opponent. Asal doesn't do this, he takes the risk, not caring that he may hurt his his opponent. Serme is the perfect example. No other player on the tour does this, speaks volumes about his character. He's obviously good, but I hate watching him play, and I have concern for the safety of the other players (and PSA should as well). PSA need to sort him out, or boot him off tour.

    5:53 is always a difficult situation. In theory, Makin hit a loose shot and Asal should have had the right to try to gain an advantage from it despite having turned, yet there was no option he could have taken that allowed him to do so. - If Asal stops, the ref could give anything from a no let to a stroke depending on how well Makin cleared, but Makin did an excellent job of clearing the swing and leaving the whole front wall available so a no let was very possible. - Therefore, Asal plays the best shot available which is the boast, which Makin can (deliberately or not) block without penalty because the ball is not travelling directly to the front wall. EDIT: Should rule 9.1.3 have been applied and Asal given a stroke?

  • @robbinburns6329

    Asal can choose to play or not play. If he chose not, and the ref says "no let" he can remind the ref he just recently hurt an opponent by playing and is the referee wanting him to go ahead and swing away because he will happily do so going forward. Alternatively, if he was worried about "no let" then he absolutely has 100% right to take advantage of Makin having to clear 100% of the front wall, but he must hit directly at the front wall. If his shot is hit directly at the front wall, even the furthest right hand edge, then Makin would have no reason to be upset if he stepped in and was struck. So that was his option - hit to any part of the front wall he desires. Note this was not a "turn" under the rules as the ball did not pass by one side of his body and then get struck on the other (which is why he does retain full right to hit to 100% of the front wall and Makin must clear accordingly.) Players always have the possibility of playing "reverse boosts" in any situation they like, and this is usually done for tactical/taking advantage reasons. However, a player making this kind of boast accepts responsibility for not hitting his opponent. If you do hit the opponent, then It might be a "let" under the general rules, but you are also risking "conduct warning or conduct stroke" if the referee feels your choice to hit was reckless or dangerous. Exactly what happened in this case.

    @@robbinburns6329 Great point that it was not actually a turn under the rules; this does mean that rule 9.1.3 covers this situation and allows for a stroke to be awarded to Asal if it's deemed to be a winning return, even though the ball is not travelling directly to the front wall. One would hope that this same logic gives Asal the chance of being awarded a stroke under rule 8.6.7 if he had stopped, but I've never seen this applied because usually the non-striker doesn't block the boast like Makin did here.

If he didnt play the ball, refs might give a let/nolet. he could have played a crosscourt to the backhand which will likely continue the rally. he decided to control of his own fate and played a boast which would likely be a winning/stretch makin much more. however outcome didnt go as plan
