This HARD CORE Total War campaign is EVEN BETTER in 2023
Ойындар
Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion is NO DOUBT one of the most insane and hard core Total War campaigns of all time, and certainly took that prize when it released - and arguably only lost it once its spiritual sequel, Total War Attila, inherited its place. But Barbarian Invasion still stands tall today, almost 20 years later, as one of the most innovative, charming, intense and dynamic Total War campaigns of all time.
I thought it was time to take a look back at this expansion, to see why it was so great to begin with, and why it holds such a special place in my heart. Barbarian Invasion does take place in that late antiquity era of course, and since we have not just one, but two Roman factions in the game, well, it's not hard for me to love it based on that fact alone. But should you play Total War Rome: Barbarian Invasion in 2023? Remastered version or not? That's what we're here to find out.

I love that this game actually has a civil war mechanic with the Roman rebel factions. Thats also one of my favorite aspects of Attila, except for in Age of Charlemagne where it makes it completely unplayable for me.

Watching your video had brought back so much nostalgia! I had this game on disk 😂. Thanks. I also like the way you presented it and delivered it. Like you said, it really does flip Total War on it's head, especially as one of the Roman fractions, where you start from the top and very quickly crumble
This has gotten me to start another WRE campaign! In the Remaster, I really love how hard it is to change a settlement's religion. In the original, you just demolished the old religious building, and then build the new religion's building, and it would be counted as part of that religion. Not so with the Remaster. On top of that, if the settlement rebels, the AI will actually change the religious building back if it's population is still the other religion. Original RTW did not do that.

Splitting the empire up actually helped. It was too vast for a single Emperor to control, especially in a preindustrial world where information could not be delivered instantly and travelling from one part of the empire to another could take weeks
@AndysTake
Жыл бұрын
This is partially true - the massive empire did last for 200+ years before it actually split, of course, so it’s more a question of how to govern it, I’d say.
i like campaigns in which i have to juggle economics and diplomatic affairs rather than simply focusing on combat , kinda like the ottoman empire of etw or even prussia which if not played carefuly can trigger what is essentialy ww1
I would love a return of dlc campaigns some things just aren't feasible in a mega campaign like immortal empires, such as a campaign where you start off as a massive world dominating empire and struggle to keep that title, that sounds awesome
@resentfuldragon
Жыл бұрын
Thats why we need a medieval 2 because the dlc would be great. Imagine a 2nd fitna campaign where you can play the umayyads trying to keep hold of their fracturing caliphate as many different rebel factions revolt almost simultaneously. The umayyads would control most of the middle east and around half of north africa. The zubayrids would control mecca and medina, the shia would control kufa, and the khawarj would control parts of persia. The byzantines would also quickly invade armenia and the berbers would be harrassing your holdings in north africa. The final icing on that chaos pie is delhi constantly attacking your trade in india. The best part is that in history the umayyads beat all of them back (though didn't finish of byzantium) and actually grew after this, conquering what is now afghanistan, pakistan, the rest of north africa, and iberia! this would be a brutal campaign to rival even west rome from attila. You would have 12 years if you wanted to historically beat every mentioned faction except delhi and spain.

I always liked old TW DLCs that added completely new campaigns. Medieval 2 Kingdoms was the best, but the Rome 2 campaign DLCs are great too.
you forgot to mention that the units could actually swim!
Playing the original RTW, trying to win with Seleucids on the hard or legendary felt nigh on impossible. And then Barbarian Invasion came out and trying to win as the Western Roman Empire felt like the vanilla Seleucid campaign just multiple times harder. :D Great stuff Andy.
That reminds me, I should finally Play this Total War expansion. Back in 2005 I get the expansion as a christmas gift 🤔 But for some reasons my PC didn't run the expansion very well😢 But almost 20 years later, and with Barbarian Invasion included in Rome Remastered I could give it another try😅😊
I'll have to give Rome Remastered's Barbarian Invasion a go. TW Attila still ranks my 2nd favorite of all TW titles (2nd only to Medieval 2). I've tried doing the Rome 1 thing a few times, but I just haven't been able to overcome the grind in favor of the charming virtues it does offer.
Now I will definitely Play a Western Roman campaign for myself. You have really hyped me. 😅

WRE in Barbarian Invasion is the most fun campaign I've had in a Total War game. It feels soo good to actually be challenged in a strategy game for once.
I mean, the Roman Empire never truly split apart. This is a common misconception. It was still one empire with two emperors. For the Roman commoner, there were no borders or delineations that said this is the ERE and this is the WRE.
@hannibalburgers477

Holy Roman Empire was an actual empire, their modern reputation was caused by misconception. It is just that emperor had little to no authority, was constantly in struggle with pope, most vassals did not paid taxes, every region was culturally distinct although being German, did not had an united religious faith, did not had a standardized army, and did not had fair laws.
I have recently done a Full Octavian achievement in Rome Remastered. It was a blast. The economy is a complete shit at the beginning. I was able to stabilize only due to razing my own cities. I actually had a positive treasury number only closer to the turn 30 (if not later). P.S. Sarmatian Auxiliaries is my waifu.

This, along with Empire, were and still are my favorite games. I especially love playing the Eastern Roman Empire and Saxon factions, as they had the coolest units and were the most economically stable of all of the factions. In Empire my favorite factions were Britain, the Ottoman Empire, and Poland-Lithuania. Britain, having overseas colonies and well-trained musketeer units, was a formidable force upon the campaign map. And, my favorite underrated unit of the game, the Azzars, was the Ottoman Empire best combat unit in the early stages of the campaign. I also love Poland-Lithuania because it has interior lines, which makes it a perfect defensible position and can prove, if used effectively, to be a suitable springboard for conduction offensive operations.

Barbarian invasion proved to me just how far you can push your men. Multiple battles per turn for multiple turns will strain them, but they will do their duty.
Fond memories of the Western Roman Empire campaign, just when I finally start to get the Empire in order, managed to deal with the surrounding barbarians, secure my borders and get the economy jump started, only for the Eastern Roman Empire to betray me and invade Italy in full force, which of course emboldened the barbarians putting me right back to square one. Main thing I disliked about Barbarian Invasion was the smaller number of regions on the campaign map, I missed those clusters of cities where your could get around the one unit at a turn recruitment to quickly field an army like in northern Italy or Sicily or Greece in Rome 1.
No mention of the Romano-british? Disappointed Andy! :p Also if you want even more hard core… download and use the barbari mundi mod (bigger map and ALOT more cities)
I loved this game and the wre
I wanted to play but the keyboards commands are buggy asf
Civ V has a ''fall of rome'' scenario which has a frustrating achievement: play as Rome and never lose a single city. God, it's impossible
To be honest, i recently downloaded remastered , and i cant stop playing barbarian invasion, for me is way better than Attila:))))
Destroying the huns when they tried to invade my lands was such a great feeling that at first i was cautious if what was happening was real or a trap
Only good thing from Rome Remastered is Chivalry TW a medieval convertion of the game and yeah its fun
It might be one of the hardest campaigns in the game but it can still be beaten in 2 turns with some witty diplomacy.
I'd still prefer medieval 3. The Mongols serve a similar effect as the Huns.

I always like BI more because the way Attila works in TW Attila is stupid
This game should be having random natural disasters and worse spread of virus
To be honest Rome remaster is good but Rome two was unnecessary. I wish this remaster was more historically accurate to the real one. Like Alexander kingdoms and Athena and Sparta. Pathia and numbers of tribes. Cities should be few and many towns with limited resources and manpower. Agents are just spies and diplomat
Challenging, yes. Good, no. Every vanilla campaign in RTW and its expansions has aged atrociously. Nearly unplayable. The only reason the remaster exists is for mods, not because these campaigns are still any good.
Asking me to sub makes me less likely to actually sub
The remaster's UI is so disappointingly ugly to me. I don't like the color changes either.
Attila is not better. It has its moments, but its designed to be hard and annoying without being fun.
