The injector fuel rack in all the injectors are stuck. If you look straight down by where you were putting your vice grips, you'll see a little finger that goes into the rack that goes up to each injector. take some WD40 and spray up inside the injector where that rack goes into and take a screw driver and a small hammer and lightly tap the rack that goes into the injector until it moves. Gently tap it out then in until it moves freely. keep spraying WD40 into the injector where the rack goes into. If they loosen up and all move freely you can hook the governor rod back up on both sides with a new cotter pin. put a vise grip on each rack tube and go ahead and fire the engine again, with the valve covers off. They don't sling hardly any oil. if the little rods don't free up on each injector, you'll need to remove the injectors and replace them or work with them on a work bench using WD40. Good Luck!

Actually you can't get WD40 to the stuck part on the injector that way. The pumping plunger is what is stuck and that's way down in the innards of the injector. If you just had to spray something in it you would need to take the two fuel lines off the injector and squirt your favorite penetrant down the two holes and then cross your fingers Usually it's old varnished up fuel causing the problem. Acetone and other high octane petroleum products can cut the stuff loose.

You could have unscrewed the fuel filter to get it to Lose prime. Old mud flap works good for blocking air intake. You have one or more stuck injectors holding the rack open. Need to pull the injectors out and lube them up until they all move freely.

I remember back in 1965 riding in the family station wagon watching scores of freightliner cabovers wondering where they were going and coming from......

Good video to learn what NOT to do. Always check for a stuck injector on a Detroit.

Take a Blunt punch and hammer tap the top of each injector like you would a Stuck valve. Loose ones will spring back. stuck ones will not. Spray your favorite bust rust, and with the help of a small hook bar pry the injector up and tap again. Repeat as necessary. The fuel Gov. defaults to wide open on shut down. Tom

Just make sure the rocker is all the way up when tapping it down, otherwise you might be beating the wrong injector.

Really don't see why it didn't runaway as it did level off. Anyway find the stuck injector. Bumping the engine over (WITH FUEL HOSE OFF) and find the injector plunger that stays down. Pry up and tap down till it frees up. NEVER> EVER bump a detroit over till the injector rack is free and hooked back up to the governor. Make sure the emergency flap works. A Detroit can start instantly with just one bump so be alert.

@@frazzledudeevery one I have does on the supercharger I have seen one suck past the vane seals engine oil and run off that ! hands down the best way to kill one with out damage is have a big Co2 fire extinguisher with that horn to put over the intake on top of that blower I also first off put a quarter turn valve on the fuel line by the gear pump I have a shop full of them 2-53 to a 12V 92

Lesson learned.No harm no foul.😂😂😂 Wiley you moved like the Eveready bunny😂😂😂

My grandfather drove a white freightliner just like that for AIRCO hauling liquid nitrogen. We have alot of pictures of it. Unfortunately a drunk hit him head on and wrecked the truck . My grandfather bailed out and survived. We have the pictures of the wrecked truck too.. After that he drove conventional semis for 25 years more

When the Cab went over it pulled the throttle. I had the same problem when I had a busted motor mount. Same problem except my pickup was in gear!

That's funny I did a 10ft Wheely into a tree!

Remove pins out of the plunger of injector that secure it to the rack. This way, sometimes they can free up by not pulling injectors. Now, Find the one(s) that won't move in and out freely. Sometimes some penetrant on the plungers and some finessing in and out frees them up. Sometimes it don't and the injector need removed to be freed. Other times they're so stuck the injector needs rebuilt.

Wiley give Ol 2 Stroker a call he's the Detroit Guru. I think follow those Linkages to that Little box at the front of the Engine undo four screws and theres an Adjusting Nut I believe in there that will loosen those Linkages I think

I worked on many Detroit diesels while in the army and when they run away like that you do panic. I have taken fuel lines out of a fuel can and the engine started running off the engine oil till it blew a rod through the side. Suck the clipboard right through the intake

Lol Wiley that's why most old timers call those Detroits screaming Detroits. Here's a tip for you when your when your getting ready to try to start one take the air intake hose loose and if nothing else just put a Wal-Mart bag over it if it starts running away. I always keep about a foot long 1" X 6" board in the back of the truck just as something to put on the air intake to shut them down. I'm like you I'm surprised it didn't end up with a rod sticking through the side of the block. There is one thing for sure that engine has a lot of life in her by running that hard for so long. Check and see if you don't have some stuck injectors stuck. If they are a few stuck take a small hammer and tap on them to see if they won't free up. I'm not talking about beating them to death just tap on them some and see if you can't free them up like that. From watching you try to get the rack to move it looked like the rod wasn't stuck normally it an injector or two stuck because that's what the rack controls. If I was a betting man that's what your going to find. I've had the same problem so I'm speaking from experience. Love your channel and its so funny your Wiley is Jacob hahaha. When it got to winding up i got a little excited and could not find the emergency kill and was looking around for anything that i could use to smoother it out with but couldn’t find anything I have since located the emergency kill and i will have something close to shut air off with. Looks like some stuck injectors. Remove em and manually work the stuck unit while adding some penetrating oil to the fuel inlet and you should be able to unstick it

Those have to be set in a particular way. Those shouldn't be removed. There is a pin that secures the rack to the plunger. That's what you remove

Saw a Bobcat engine run away running backwards! Couldn't block off the exhaust because it was a pipe in a pipe! Finally plugged the intake! Bobcat wanted that engine!

I had a Detroit, and a Mack engine run backwards. They didn't run very fast and was able to shut them down quickly. Never seen one runaway backwards though.

The Detroit engines I have been around have a air flap cutoff built into the intake! Need to locate and be prepared to use in these situations.

I think the low sulfur fuel is the problem ,. Back in the 70's never had a rack stick now if a Detroit sits for a year or two look out !!

I live in California, and that ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel has destroyed many engines and cost millions of dollars in damage throughout the state. It chemically attacks and disintegrates fuel system seals and O-rings made out of buna-n rubber. The replacement seals and O-rings are made of neoprene, and they seem to hold up okay. The other problem with the ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel is that is has very poor lubricating properties. Because of this, pumps and injectors using low sulfur fuel wear out quickly. Some of the good quality diesel fuel additives will increase the lubricity of the fuel and add some of the life back to fuel system components. All in all, I would advise truckers to avoid California. Over-the-road diesel fuel here costs $6.50 a gallon. And the state wants to ban the sale of all diesel powered trucks in favor of electric battery powered trucks. The state's regulations here are insane, and an independent trucker just can't make a living anymore.

Dude stated that when they laid the cab over it threw the throttle wide open locked. He had stated that the rack was stuck, before he saw that. I have only a little experience with diesel engines, but I wouldn't mess with trying to start one that had been setting up, without, at least, having handy, a quick means of shutting the air and/or fuel off. We all have brain farts, I guess, sometimes disastrous ones, though. I have heard of engines being worn enough that they can pick up oil from the crankcase and run away. In that situation, I don't know if it would be possible for it to pull enough air through the crankcase vent, if the normal intake were plugged, but I guess it might be possible. There would not be much stopping that, unless a person could find and plug the vent with it threatening to blow apart.

I was worried that too much stress would crack the windshields. The grease in the hydraulic cylinder was interesting. I got a shot once siphoning JP4 out of a bomber.

Next time you're fixing to fire up a demontriot diesel, remove the valve covers first. Next, remove the clevis pins second. Next, check to see if the control rack sticks. If it has stuck injectors, it will have a stuck track. Bar the engine over by hand. Watch for plungers that won't pop back up. Remove those injectors. Spray liberally with acetone or other varnish removal. Get it into the fuel line holes. Hold it in your hand and strike the plunger top with a soft face deadblow hammer. Repeat until you see a mist firing out of the pin holes. Put it back in the engine, set the timing or injector height. Set your rack. Attach the governor control rod with the clevis pin. Prime the system. Fire it up.

I had a 71 White Freightliner that was a long straight truck. I wanted to move the axles back and make a tractor out of it. Sold it before I did anything with it. 350 small cam Cummins and 13 speed. 4:44 gears in the rears.

I had a 70 , had a 250 Cummins, 10 speed 4.64 gears. Slow, especially going uphill with a heavy load. It was dependable.

Good old engine burning clean

Pop the racks out make sure each injector actuates thru its whole range of motion smoothly whichever ones are stuck or real tight, loosen up the fingers on the rack and slack off the rocker for those injectors

I started out in a White Freightliner cabover exactly like that one. Mine didn't come with power steering or seat belts. This was in 1980.

Gm engine when working on them have a board to choke it out at the air cleaner if it over runs the engine as you said check it out before starting it .

Oh yeah. It’s a great lookin truck. Farm truck. Probably lots of raid miles then farmer bought it and kinda put it into retirement. Used it once in a while. Then parked it. But a great looking Freightliner.

Excellent video Wiley :) , Jacob :) that motor definitely is wild open scream Detroit V8 could and check out side linkage to also pedal in cab if not should be electric switch for Throttle Overtide in dash on switch need key ignition switch on postion also motor might need be in running mode started up ! What it Throttle Override switch is for Truckers in park mode turn on so go get stuff at Serivce Center like coffee so keep motor running 1000 RPM and when come to truck turn off back to low Idle of like 750 then driving off and when get back top gear to drive flick switch on so be like Cruise Control too ! If that help out Wiley 3 to higher tons truck in Desiel motor like Detroit, Cat , Cummings, Mack , Volvo, Freightliner, old Fords , Sterling , International trucks had it and also used Throttle Override was build up Air Pressure on truck plus trailers also air suspension and on cold weather or starts too ! Hope that helps out why and should be free on when motor shut off on heads agree to that and hope find why !

I don't consider a stuck rack a runaway it's just full throttle. A runaway is when it runs on it's oil from the crankcase and is a real smoke show.

You are partially right,when the rack is stuck it is in full fuel the governor by design cannot pull the rack back! But yes when Detroit run off & suck oil past rings or blower seals that is a true runaway 👍

There is a plunger on cab jack to pump cab back down.

You gotta take the inspection plate off under the injectors right by the exhaust manifold

The injectors have rod mechanisms on them .They are all connected by the linkage when one injector is stuck the whole linkage jams all of the injectors in the same throttle positon

Unfortunately I dont know how to unstuck a stuck rack there. I was thinkin maybe it jammed whenever that cab slammed down and nailed her wide open, but I mean it could be injectors, it dont look rusty or anything. Why else would it stick?

Wiley, please don't ever mess with an old Screamin Demon w/o making sure the governor rack is free. You are just gonna find where it is stuck and free it up. Take rack apart and check and free up the sticky areas. That governor arm should move freely. Good job shutting her down. I'm really surprised that work.

You have to take a screwdriver on each injector to see which one is not moving the ones that aren’t moving or stuck. You have to try to get unstuck or replace.
