It makes you realise how few peers Kendrick has when it comes to performing. I feel like a lot of rappers don’t know how to perform on a grand or elaborate scale. Some do, most don’t imo. especially If we’re talking rappers age 35 and under.

What I liked about this show was that while everyone seemed to get a good amount of time, Dre seemed to be the centerpiece in everything. Which makes sense considering that he’s arguably the most important figure in the history of hip hop and he played an instrumental role in the career of every one of his co-headliners.

Definitely one of the most important figures in Hip Hop history. Dre getting the biggest spotlight with Snoop also made sense because they were so close to their hometowns. And Dre and Snoop were some of biggest artists from those areas ever before the younger acts came up. It all came full circle really.

It was known amongst dancers, and yet they still had thousands of applicants. It wasn't a bait and switch situation at all. The dancers chose to perform without pay, for the opportunity to perform in front of millions, and to be able to add it to their repertoire/resume. At no point was a dancer hired under the assumption of pay. It was not only clear, but in black and white, and they had to sign. Pump your brakes.

Kendrick performance was definitely the best. Him having to most energy makes sense because he’s 15 years younger than pretty much everyone else performing. This was a great moment but it’s unfortunate that the NFL was late in incorporating Hip-Hop into their half time show as the main attraction. Can only imagine how insane this performance would be if Dre did it around 2003.

This show was real emotional for me as someone who grew up in the early 2000s. Virtually all the rappers here (except Kendrick, who wasn't famous yet and, well, a kid at the time) were seen as a bad influence on the youth at the time. I live in India and I have friends who told me that their school principals told students not to listen to Eminem. That's how far his infamy spread. So the fact that now, 20 years later, their music is considered iconic enough to be performed at the Super Bowl, and seeing Eminem being saved for the end, and Dr Dre rightfully revered and presented as a musical father figure of sorts sent me into an existential spiral. A WONDERFUL spiral.

You left out a few things. One being that Dre played the piano hook from "I Ain't Mad Acha" in tribute to Tupac. The next being that the whole theme of the Half Time Show was about Dre and his legacy. All of these artists were discoveries, protégés that wrote lyrics or songs for Dre on his major singles and studio albums. I really wish it would've culminated in an appearance from Cube and the rest of NWA because it would've covered Dre's entire career and topped it off with a great big bow. It's not just a block party, it's a house of hip hop and artistry that Dre built. The artists all fill wings of that house and occupy certain eras and styles. That's what made this concept so convincing. To me, I think alot of the artists were resting on their laurels and just playing to the hits. It's not like we were seeing these guys firing on all cylinders, with notable exceptions being Kendrick and Mary J Blige, but again, the concept made it convincing. We all ofc wish Tupac could've been there, and it also would've been nice to see an appearance from the D.O.C., but you can't always get what you wish for. A great Super Bowl performance regardless.

It's really pretty amazing how far we've come culturally - in the 80's/early 90's it was absolutely the majority/mainstream opinion that rappers were all hoodlums and criminals. It's no surprise that it took until 2022 to have a hip-hop halftime show - racists had to die off and millennials take over advertising dollars first. And, of course, 90% of police and huge swaths of the country still hold those opinions.

Nothing over the top and there were a few moments of note that stood out but I think this about as solid and straightforward of a halftime show we’ve had in awhile.
