This Guitar Pedal is MASSIVE (Vibratone)

Ойын-сауық

The 1960’s were a primitive time for FX pedals. I can’t think of what’s worse: Destroying your amplifier for distortion or lugging around a 40 pound vibrato pedal to every gig. Dig it.

one of the stereo channels is out of phase so when listening to it in mono, like on some phones or Bluetooth speakers, it cancels itself out, making it silent. Try listening on stereo speakers or headphones and you can here everything. It doesn't sound right because it's out of phase, but it'll at least work.

great video! the thing is back then it wasn't so easy to pull things off and more effort, passion, and innovation were required to create, well at least that's why i think classics such as Zepp will always hold up and these true sound effects.

wanted to watch, but the sound cuts out toward the end. I have the boosta grande, also and a couple more 2000s era bbe pedals, those bbe pedals are huge in size though I had a fulltone tape delay and it got stolen when we were taking a break at our gig.

Ahhh, yes...the rotating speaker. Getting that sound can actually be dangerous AF... Karlheinz Stockhausen, pretty much THAT GUY as far as early electronic music goes, was also snakebit by that sound. So, this came about because he wanted sounds that could rotate in a quad space. So...four microphones, one Leslie with the rotor horn only. That wasn't it. Too much distance between mics with the narrow horns...plus he wanted ONE source and not two. The next step was to mount a carefully-balanced small horn speaker on a turntable. Now, note that "carefully-balanced" bit there. It gets important... So, rotating speaker attempt #1 got the motion right...but only in the mids. Stockhausen wanted a wider range. And since wider range invariably means bigger speaker, well... So if I remember correctly, it was either the second or third version of this that broke loose from the turntable, sending a hefty ol' chunk of speaker bouncing off of things in the WDR studio. Did this stop him? NO!!! So, WDR said that the speaker experiments had to take place in a controlled-access area under remote control. This led to version #4. Bigger, heavier...capable of smashing concrete even, particularly after that speaker ALSO broke loose, wrecked a few mics and...well, see above. So that brings us to a rather famous picture of Stockhausen standing by this HEAVY METAL CAGE with something that looks like a mutated Altec Voice of the Theatre setup inside, and with prominent "VORSICHT!" signs affixed. Poke around, you'll find it... I'd put it here but YT has conniption fits about URLs. So...what was the point of this monstrosity? Well...spatialization, for one thing. It's all over the place in "Hymnen", f'rinstance. But moreso, he figured out the actual mojo behind that sound! The Doppler effect. When a sound source approaches a mic, human ear (attached or otherwise), etc, the sound waves compress and get shorter wavelengths, and as it moves away, the pitch goes down. So what we associate with the...uh, pedal there not only has to do with constantly changing volume, but constantly changing pitch. Just a tad...like you'd get when tuning a 12-string while sober. But that, combined with the volume shifts, that's what the Fender does but ONLY through the side holes...which you noticed with the front cover off. That kills the effect altogether, because now you can clearly hear the speaker that's behind the drum rotor, and unlike the rotor port, it ISN'T moving relative to your ear, mic, etc. Ergo, no watery detunings. It's a nifty device, actually...and far safer than Stockhausen's audio thrill ride AND another Leslie of Terror made by Yamaha. That one uses three speakers, each mounted to something like a piston shaft, with a bigass lead counterweight to counterbalance the speaker on the opposite end. And as if that's not already scary, each speaker-shaft-counterweight spins at a slightly different speed. On "hi", these things move fast enough to get a breeze going out of the amp's speaker slots! A literal OSHA hazard! ...and people think music is a "nice, safe job"! 😂

There are a lot of old organs out there that are starting to fail from age, I will never advocate destroying a fully functional instrument, but you can find leslie rotaries in them, as well as old drum machine/rhythm modules.
