Luka is a young boy being abused by his parents. This song was written to bring awareness to child abuse after the singer lived in an apartment where she suspected there was a case.

This song reminds me of me and my sister. When we both lived at home we used to say this was our song. At the time we were in a very unhealthy living situation and we lived in apartment 2A in Queens NY, so between the abuse and second floor reference this was our song sadly enough
You can see Jai’s face change when she realized the songs meaning-God bless you Jai!

@@garybutler3911Whatever. Half didn’t realize the song was from an abused young boy’s point of view. Besides , the video is rather deceiving in a way; it focuses on her as the singer rather than the young man in distress. Just my opinion. Powerful song, but a little confusing in how video is presented.

The understanding of the video doesn't deal with the issue of her looking like a victim herself, and him saying women with a mouth, women with an opinion, is equally abusive to men. Simply unbelievable.@@chuckhutton5087

Okay, time out folks. Did we smoke up before today's video? Because this is about a CHILD who lived upstairs, and the child's name was Luca. He was the one getting beaten, not a woman. He's telling the woman downstairs not to say anything because he thinks that his dad will beat him harder.

Prince wrote Suzanne a letter back in 1987 where he called this song “the most compelling piece of music I’ve heard in a long time”. It was a hit song on the charts and shined a light on the topic of child abuse that wasn't spoken of hardly at all until this period.

As most people know the background of this song, because of the upbeat introduction before any lyrics, many younger and those who have a certain preference musically wasn’t aware of what this song was about and its subject matter. Because it was sung by a female artist she automatically assumed that it was about a female in an abusive relationship. But if she listened to the song again, and alone it would be abundantly clear that it’s about child abuse.
This song reminds me of when Janet Jackson was on "Good Times". She plays a young girl named Penny who lived in the same apartment building as the Evans family. When you first see her, she has a band aid on her forehead. Then when she took off her sweater, her upper arm was bandaged. When they asked her what happened to her arm she said she bumped into the stove when she tripped over her cat and some hot chocolate fell on her. So whenever they would ask her anything, she would lie and say she fell or whatever. She was covering up the abuse she was getting at the hands of her mother. Eventually, they figure out what's really going on and report it. It was a good episode.
@frauleinmona
Жыл бұрын
That's right. I remember Willona was fitting Penny for a costume for her because Penny was going to be performing at some sort of event. And Willona took off Penny's shirt and there were all these bruises on her back and that's when Penny explained that she fell over her cat. Then they showed her mother getting angry with Penny while she was ironing and she unplugged the iron and walked towards Penny and was getting ready to burn her. Those were some really intense episodes.

I skipped past his sliding glass story because he's acting a fool! LOL
Suzanne Vega is singing this song from an abused child's eyes, Luka. He's the abused, not the woman.
he's sitting there laughing and joking during a song about child abuse... advice: listen to the damn lyrics
Hilarious story about walking through a slider door while reacting to a song with a serious subject matter. WTF?
I remember when this song came out a long time ago..I remember we had a classmate that was being abused by his alcoholic mother..it was sad..one time we were smoking a joint in an old garage and he told me about it and some shit he was going through..we were friends for a long time but I e haven’t seen or heard from him in years..I hope he is well.
I was 19 when this was released, it shows the power of music, It stays with you! I haven't heard this song in 30 years, I still remember all the lyrics! An American Classic!
I was taken aback by the levity and had to skip the story about the sliding door. After that I kept my eyes on Jai because I saw the moment she "got it" and it kinda broke my heart. While I know that hurt people hurt people, I still ache for those who've experienced abuse at ANYONE'S hand.

Not at all. He, like her, read it as a song about abuse, which it is, just both of them thought it was partner abuse. He then compared physical male abuse against women to women 'running their mouthes', that is having something to say . . an opinion. No wonder she connected with the song, I'm sure any woman living with him would.
Back when this song came out and up until the mid 90s, domestic violence was not discussed. I was married and my husband abused me for years, and I never told anyone. But... my neighbors knew, they could hear it. They told me later after I got a divorce. It wasn't until after the OJ trial that dv came more openly into people's awareness and it started to be okay to discuss it. I ended up being a volunteer for dv awareness seminars and workshops sharing my experience with many others. DV is just as much a problem now as always. Awareness and resources have not been able to stop this sickness. Parents need to be better at not only teaching their kids about it, but preventing it in their own relationship with their so. Men and women need to learn to control and channel their emotions and express them without abuse. Peace. 🙏🌼🌷🌺🍀💜
Jai so sorry you and your Mom were abused 😢❤ I was as well. Sending you both love ❤️🙏

This song is amazing. It always makes me reflect and also makes me want to cry. Luka is a song about child abuse. Luka is a boy who the singer suspected was being abused. There is nothing more heartbreaking than abuse of any kind, especially towards an innocent child. Thank you for sharing your reaction with us.
I heard this song years ago and couldn't stop crying as at that time I was in the same situation. Abuse is not ok. It can destroy a child. The system needs to be given an over haul. I was taken from my mother at 12 months old and adopted by a family whose maternal figure and her son abused me in every possible way. It's just not ok. Much love from Killeen TX

Jai, You are wonderful. Sending you good vibes and big hugs.
By far their worst reaction video they've ever done. It's a song about child abuse and he pauses in the middle and cracks some joke about a door. I mean, if you aren't going to invest your attention to the music then what's the point of making a reaction video?

This isn't about a woman being abused. It's about a kid.

One of her neighbors later on told her that everyone has been through some kind of abuse at some time in there life. she actually wrote this song in two hours. was very interesting. i had forgot about this song. now i keep watching everyone react to it. just subscribed. everyone needs to watch for others that need help i believe in this the world is upside down for everyone especially in our time. sorry if this was to long. was a bad time for a door joke but reast was ok. peace...

Wow. This must leave so many questions (I’m not sure how much you comprehended in the first grade). I hope they got to a safe place … but it must be doubly traumatic to remove the victim from the environment than to remove the threat. I’m not sure when that was, but today I think they wouldn’t try to disrupt every aspect in their lives - they’d keep them in the same school with same peers, but go back to a safe place after. Easier said than done though - and there’s no clear answer.
I'm reaching all my peeps out there to let you know that Dax has a powerful new music video that the world needs to hear called The devil's calling. MUST WATCH!!!!!!
I was a teenager when this came out, she explained it's true story about a kid upstairs that was getting abused in her apts
Suzi said in an interview not too long ago, that she was talking about that song, and abuse in general with a friend of hers. And she told Suzi, "I don't know anyone who hasn't been abused." And that struck deep. If you gotta hit someone, or consider it, it's time to go. Forever.
God bless you, I hope the rest of your life is filled with peace, tranquility and healing.
What is the man in this reaction hiding that he can’t be present in this reaction.
I broke the cycle of abuse in my family by not reproducing. My dad beat me up, screamed at me & called me names. His dad did the same to him. His dad also murdered 2 people & committed suicide.

Abuse is abuse. It’s crazy how deep ones insecurities can run and for them to abuse others so that the victim experiences/feels their own “I’m a victims” pain, is very very saddening. Why continue that pain? Much love people. Remember not only to do something nice for a total stranger, but to remind any of your loved ones how much they are blessing in this creators plain.

There's no excuse for violence. Words can hurt, but should never invite physical assault.
It has to be a nightmare for women in abusive relationships, they may not even tell close friends the abuse they are going thru so everyone should now the signs, for example if you go visit a friend and as you get up to leave and she ask you to stay longer, its because as soon as you leave her nightmare will begin again...
