This gets rid of my charging anxiety on the S2 Del Mar

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In my previous S2 Del Mar adventure, I hit the limits of the 16A charger (on 15amp GFI/GCF outlets) that comes with LiveWire motorcycles - I vowed to never let that happen again as I invested in a few adapters and a new charging unit. Today I'm riding around Richmond Virginia to see how everything works and if I spent my money wisely.
I absolutely recommend these:
Get the Webasto GO - amzn.to/48raKhB
Tesla Tap Mini (40amp) - amzn.to/47fdfT0
Adapters to use with the stock Lectron EVSE (max 3.6kW)
14-50 (RV campgrounds and some dryers) - amzn.to/48qSlBq
10-30 (to use on my dryer) - amzn.to/3tta4JA
6-50 (some 240 air conditioner units **hotels) - amzn.to/48qSRiQ

Call ahead if you can and make sure it’s okay to use their 240, or ask when you arrive. Find a good spot (shade during summer, sun during winter), plug in. Wait. Ride. Repeat!

I just looked where I live in the Seattle area within a 18 mile radius. 37 level 2 chargers most of which are single units with 3-5kw. 64 level 3 chargers, most with 4 or more units, and some even have a level 2 as well. My grocery stores have level 2 chargers for free (3kw usually). Charging infra is vastly improving. Down the Pacific Coast Highway from WA to CA there are DC fast chargers every 50-75 miles now.

That’s awesome! Most of the high speed corridors have them now - it’s the areas between those corridors that are lacking DCFC (at least here on the east coast). One can pretty much get around the whole country, sans for a few places in the Midwest. The prevalence of L2 and L3 is why I continue to ride LiveWire - now I get the best of both worlds

My F150 Lightning came with a Ford branded Webasto charger. We saw 5.1kw charging a Del Mar from the Lightning using that charger.

Question for you I’ve got the Tesla adapter, but how do I activate the Tesla charging unit? Is there an app do I need to register? I’ve never used a Tesla system before.?

And I thought germany didn't have enough Type-2 chargers. My Alrendo came with a 1,3kw charger to plug into a regular outlet. So far I didn't need the other plug types so far.

What is the difference between the Tesla Tap and all the cheaper units I have seen listed online that claim to adapt to tesla ?? Also I have heard a lot of times from your videos, as well as others, that the included livewire chargers trip GFI outlets. Why is that and how come it doesn't happen all the time? For some reason in my house there is one single outlet in the two car garage, its a GFI outlet and its where I have been charging my Del Mar. It has not tripped it yet, so that got me wondering why sometimes they will work and other times they will not. I heard you say before that its because of some AC filter or something on the bikes, but I have not been able to find anything anywhere about said system.

Well I can't really speak on all the other units on Amazon, but the TeslaTap is the OG small, compact unit. There have always been adapters, however TeslaTap was the first to make it compact and of good quality. I've used them for years - never failed. So the AC filter trips 15amp GCFI because it has a quick 16amp surge, but then drops back down to 12-15amps for regular charging. The filter is checking the 'quality' of the energy source to make sure it's good enough to charge 10-12 hours. The ELW filter is on the right side under the tank faring, and can be bypassed with the right wiring hookup. I assume the Del Mar has the same AC filter, as it's a requirement to be sold in California - therefore all models have the AC filter. I haven't checked to see where it is on the Del Mar, so for now just using the Webasto Go to help with charging in the wild. The Webasto unit seems to help a little, as it is programed to start off at 12amps, and then goes up, so it won't trip 15amp GCFI outlets. I'm still testing this out on outlets I know the stock EVSE charger trips, just haven't gotten to it yet.

I guess the S2 Del Mar is not a long-distance bike, but I think it is a dead end to making EV bikes without DCFC ability. All EV bikes should have a 16A Level 1 charger (3.6 kW), adjustable amps (6-8-10), and a Level 3 DCFC. Maybe Level 2 chargers are more common in some places, but it's not for the future when many DCFCs are popping up everywhere.

  • @AdventuresonZero

Well, like with anything - distance traveled is relative to fuel/charging infrastructure. I've not yet tried a long distance trip with the S2, but will soon. I think each has its place, and most places just don't seem to utilize them properly. I don't believe DCFC belongs in built up areas and cities, they belong in the vast spaces between cities and built up areas. Just don't see enough of that yet, at least in my region.

I currently use a Tesla Gen 1 UMC cable with the Tesla Tap on my Zero SR/S for all the reasons you mentioned. Unfortunately the Gen 2s only go up to 32A so I like the Grizzl-E Mini as a portable charging unit. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIGY0cSQlpzfpLQ.html

For the Tesla destination chargers, there isn't anything you need to do other than ensure the Tesla charger is powered, plug in the Tesla Tap, wait a few seconds, then plug it into the bike.
