The thing that makes it revolutionary is that it turns on vintage and manual lenses and makes them usable for solo photographers and videographers. Millions of vintage lenses collecting dust and growing mold become useful again. Filmmaking gets lots more affordable and useful. I just hope DJI doesn't have this locked up with patents, and we can get this without attaching to DJI's ecosystem.

I really hope we see LiDAR being embraced in more cameras in the future. I also hope we see this "add-on" tech being more widely accepted and built up more robustly. A difficulty long term with focus pulling systems and the more affordable cine-lenses is that the focus rotor apparatus squeezes the lens and the mount of the lens bends/breaks over time (sometimes it takes years). I do honestly believe that for low-light and close-throw distances, we'll likely see LiDAR appear on future cameras. It makes sense to do a combination of phase-detect + LiDAR in hybrid approaches similar to how we currently do dual-pixel, phase-detect, and contrast-detect in cameras all working together to cover all the trade-offs and conditions to get the best focus balance. Having LiDAR affordably thrown into the ring is a big win, and it's great to see innovation pushing forward. Also as this matures, I can see this being used more and more in professional cinema scenarios to allow cinematography to focus more on other higher level topics when they don't have to worry as much about sharp focus in shot. The automation for this switching focus smoothly is also going to be a big win in repeat-ability of shots between takes in big-cinema.

@Sam Holland concerning focus to infinity on lidar: in my opinion, this could be easily handled by software update - just add a infinity focus point in the calibration process and if subject reaches end of lidar distance go to infinity. It would be another very very useful upgrade to an already capable system! hoping @DJI is listening :)

This is getting so close to the Holy Grail for focus with single-camera operators. Once that DJI hand grip comes out a and once they get a few other issues you mentioned sorted, this will be amazing. Even with a focus puller, push-ins and other tracking shots are a nightmare, and this sort of thing will make a huge difference. Just a having a device that gives you reliable and flexible autofocus on any lens will be a boon.

I've been doing film/videography professionally for about four years now. About six months ago, I finally decided to get a few manual-focus-only lenses and try to learn the art of manually focusing. It was, and still is, revelatory. It's the most fun I have ever had in this business. I don't see myself going back. I use a DJI RS2 with the DJI follow focus motor when I shoot on a gimbal, and it's honestly not nearly as difficult as I expected. It takes a couple weeks to get the hang of it, but once you really "get it," it really does become second nature. I haven't shot with an autofocus lens since June of this year. I have now purchased a number of manual lenses, many of them vintage, and it just opens up an amazing new world of cinematography. Everyone should give it an honest try.

Do you ever film solo in a situation where you don't have control? If I'd shoot a documentary solo I think I'd have to think about too many things at the same time to do manual focus, but when I can direct and things are more predictable, I could see mastering manual focus being very valuable. What is it about vintage lenses that makes them look better? I haven't used them and I haven't seen anything that convinced me I couldn't just do it in grading, haha.

I have the predecessor of this gimbal with the previous lidar AF - it works perfectly. Only challenge is that when subjects get out of the lidar range (10-12m) the system automatically focuses at infinity, assuming that this is and the mechanical end of the focus throw of the lens (that was mechanically detected during the lens calibration). Unfortunately, nowadays most lenses can throw the barrel slightly beyond optical infinity for whatever so stupid reasons such as ‚headroom for temperature driven or mount tolerances (I believe they just want to save money during final quality control). Fur use with the lidar AF this means that you will end up with blurry backgrounds at infinity. Only ways to solve this is either limit the barrel throw mechanically at optical infinity during calibration (e.g. with the hard stops of a manual follow focus) or to calibrate the lens‘ infinity with shimming rings. I did the latter with my Sirui 50mm and getting unbelievable results. Having your lens shimmed correctly to meet end of barrel throw with optical infinity is also ver helpful when focusing manually - if you want infinity, throw the barrel to the end, and you nail it. Having an autonomous system (i.e. w/o) the gimbal would be a game changer for us amateurs who can‘t afford those 50 grands AF systems.

Just so I get this right, if you are starting from scratch, (not counting the camera or lenses), its like $650 for the lidar, focus motor is around $150, another $280 for the gimbal, then your going to need some kind of rail for the motor to mount to so another $100(ish). So just shy of $1200? Even starting from scratch that really isn't a bad price for everything you can do. There is real value in this. If you are a solo filmmaker this is awesome! 😎

@@A1Bokeh I meant for bigger productions. For solo interviews or other static stuff it's pretty useful but in situations I could use the AF the most, it's not reliable enough yet

LIDAR is such an advance over conventional auto-focus, it should be in all professional quality cameras. In fact, both systems could be in the same camera, since only LIDAR adds more hardware. At any event, the Dji LIDAR unit will really be useful in cameras that do not support auto-focus, like the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema cameras. I use a Canon C200 that supports auto-focus lenses already.

This is awesome. I use a Canon 90D and to shoot in slo mo at 100fps you loose auto focus. With the LIDR, problem solved!!!

Its the best thing for loner shooters and it certainly helps in certain situations when you need autofocus and to save money. Its always about saving money isnt it : D. Sometimes you need manual because you want to time the focus movement and not let the machine decide how, even though the machine can have how fast or slow you want to rack, but, in your hands, you decide. So just like manual exposure, manual focus is great for filming and likewise, autofocus is ideal for certain situations like sports, vlogging, handheld jerky as fuck shoot or when you're a fkg loner. Well, honestly, i am a fkg loner so ill need it, but only for certain things so its a good thing to have

PLEASE Could you help me with a few questions? Regarding the DJI high bright monitor, can it handle external RAW recording, similar to the Atomos Ninja V with Sony cameras? If I plan on purchasing an additional DJI motor, how many motors can the right 4D handgrip control effectively? the LiDAR, autofocus tool specifically designed for cine lenses! what is its range ? can it handle autofocus to infinity distance Does the left handgrip exclusively control gimbal movement, and does it require the DJI Ronin RavenEye for full functionality? Thanks so much for taking the time!

Just got the rs3 pro and looking to practice with it over Christmas with my 6K Pro. Im definitely going to buy the LIDAR as it gets tiresome having to use BMs focus assist if you need to move around closer or backwards on the subject. As always, top video and wonderfully explained. Ta Sam Merry Xmas fella

Well that video took off, didn't it Sam? Haha - this thing looks AMAZING. Bummed you need to the gimbal to get it up and running because I was seriously considering buying it (I have Canon CN-E lenses that I can't really use for run & gun because I'd need to hire an AC to pull focus remotely). Excellent job on this vid!

Important question. Can the DJI LiDAR unit be used to active track using Canon without the focus motor and calibration? Meaning let’s say I don’t want to use DJI to focus but instead let Canon do its thing, but I want to use the active track of the DJI LiDAR unit, is that possible? I’m a one man band and want to use the LiDAR for active tracking myself on videos and wonder if that’s possible. Especially locking on myself; is that all feasible with the DJI LiDAR ?
