DJI is a very innovative company. I have a few of their products. I have the mic system and use it all time. I have my Mavic air 2 which is "Old" now, but still amazing, I have a Ronin...etc. The Lidar thing is cool, but honestly I shoot with Sony cameras which have amazing AF. Coming from an event shooter/content creator, this just looks totally cumbersome for no reason

I know right, best thing is to rent a gimbal and calibrate and store it and then move on. Until they have a new version which allows for it to be stored on the onboard chip. I think DJI intentionally do not want people to buy the lidar without buy the Gimbals or the 4D, Or transmission unit.

Been doing this for a year now, it works great. That said, having also used a PDMovie follow focus for quite a while, I'm looking forward to seeing how well the new Live Air 3 smart works, particularly as it can store 5 lens profiles, while the DJI can only store 3.

The gotcha was you still need the gimbal or their monitor to store the lens profiles. Also the way the autofocus will not ignore things pAssing in front of it or track any subject. Once it does these things I will be interested, otherwise it’s a lot of money for something with limited use. I don’t film myself, but as a videographer and DOP would love a working autofocus for manual lenses.

Very subjective, the way I see it though is that many AF lenses slap a premium almost the price of the Lidar system on top anyway so hard to say whether it's not worth it.

You'd think the Lidar system could sort of clip on to a lens, get calibrated to somebody moving back and forward (ie Confirm: In Focus?), get synced with the focus throw, and just be good to go. Or Lidar/autofocus built into lense sets etc. It seems so under-utilised.

A few years ago, at a SONY cinema camera launch, I asked the presenter about the autofocus system. Surprisingly the audience behind me reacted humorously, suggesting that serious cinematographers don't use autofocus. I chuckled to myself and turned back to the audience to point out its value for one-person crews, like in interviews - they went silent! The presenter, unsure, hadn't tested it. In conclusion, I believe autofocus has its place in cinema despite negative perceptions from others - especially those that pretend they have industry experience etc.. if you’re a ‘proper’ creative, you’ll know when not to use it!

It's great, practical, affordable - but nothing what will change videography, it will it make in some cases easier, but nothing that can be done any other way. Apart from that, handmade or irregularities have their charm and honesty. It also acts mechanically and not organically. If you film alone and have the money, it's a great solution.

Solid vid, the DJI stuff looks great. In other news though, I'm thinking you might as well zoom to fill your A-Roll, I found the jump from filled frame 16x9 footage to your letterboxed footage a bit disjointing. I'm in close enjoying all the footage full screen and then I'm swung back out to a really thin frame! Alternatively, make the project a 2:1 ratio, and make everything fit that so then when you watch landscape on a phone it fills the whole phone 👌That then keeps the anamorphic look, but has a consistent fill. Anywho, peace and love ✌

Sam - Great review, as always. I love the "air trumpet". The DJI Transmission system looks pretty good, and I generally like DJI as a company. The Transmission system has better range than a comparably priced Teradek system, albeit with more latency. I'd have to test both extensively to see which works best with my work flow. The price of the Transmission system is almost affordable for most small crews, but I'd prefer to rent it. DJI has a habit of frequent firmware updates that sometimes work, and sometime fail miserably. I'm glad there is an option for V-mount batteries as DJI batteries have a bad track record of premature death. I tried the Lidar system that shipped with my DJI RS 2. It works OK when a subject was directly centered in the frame, but that's not how I often frame narrative shots or interviews. The early system didn't have a way to slow down the focus speed, and it was often too fast and prone to hunting. I do see a LOT of great uses for Lidar, but it's important to be able to quickly over ride it when needed. FWIW, I see way too many out of focus shots with auto focus cameras to rely on it. Viewers have come to accept it for vlogging and general KZread stuff, but I don't think it's reliable for most narrative work. For solo shooters, or crews without a focus puller, I think Lidar could be a great thing. I'm not stuck in old school ways, but or all around reliability, I've yet to see anything beat a good focus puller.

If I plan on purchasing an additional DJI motor, how many motors can the right 4D handgrip control effectively? the LiDAR, autofocus tool specifically designed for cine lenses! what is its range ? can it handle autofocus to infinity distance Does the left handgrip exclusively control gimbal movement, and does it require the DJI Ronin RavenEye for full functionality? Thanks so much for taking the time!

Regarding Lidar, I think the upcoming PDMovie Smart Motor will be a better option for solo shooters.

Definitely! Seems like the reviewer talked alot about the con that is the spaghettimonster you get from the cables using the DJI setup. The PDMovie Live Air 3 Smart has ZERO cables! Definitely a better buy for most people.

So noob question, the LiDAR takes over the AF entirely, so you can use it on a camera that has pants AF… like, say, the GH5 😆 asking for a friend.

Want ALL OF IT !!!!! 🤣🤣. So when making the change to cine/manual focus lenses and wanting face AF we need to get the DJI Lidar sensor, the spidery thingy and the dji monitor (what's it called again?)

Hey. You’ll need the LiDAR range finder, cable hub (spider thingy), and either DJI gimbal RS3 pro or the high bright monitor 👍🏻🎥

Is the feed encrypted? That's a huge range to literally broadcast your shoot. Same thing goes for wireless audio. Most video and audio gear heads never think about wireless security as they have little network experience or sensibility. Audio transmitters on all the time can pick up any audio even in the background between shots and clarified with sound processing. Never forget security to protect your content before release.

It's funny using Tarantino for a joke example that suggests he uses a monitor a lot because he has said that he thinks a director should be sitting next to the camera watching the action because the actors are performing for you, and not watching a monitor… maybe he only says that because he has to squint so much when looking at a monitor.

Just seeing the number of cables from the lidar device gave me a headache. I think that it's better wait for the PDMovie Live Air 3.

love your content. I am genuinely curious about this trend nowadays with creators holding the microphone while delivering information as you do in this video. What is the advantage/reason for doing this versus clipping the microphone on your shirt, or off-camera?

It’s not a style choice for me personally. I lost my magnet clip (found it since) I didn’t have time to set up a boom and I don’t like the sound of it when it’s clipped sometimes so it was quicker to hold.

Can I plug this into the RavenEye and charge it as well? I'm doing active track for keynote speeches for 8 hours straight. Everything else I can power for the full day -not the RavenEye though. Pretty important considering I need that for active track and it runs out of batteries after 4 hours when it's plugged into the Ronin and supposably gets a charge from that. am I missing something? I need more power, Scotty!
