I do a game design analysis of Toy Cavers, a solo Game Jam entry, so good it was even featured by Kotaku.

An interview with the developer of this game would be great. 😉😉

Yeah, would be interesting, from what I see they made a commercial game on steam with a similar rope mechanic "Below The Ocean", would be interesting to hear about their experience.

@@RockyMulletGamedev I actually checked the guys game out based on this comment and ended up buying it. It’s super stellar and worth every penny of its low price. This guy has a real nack for coming up with really unique and interesting mechanics for platformers. I’d def recommend i.
I played this game which ranked just one spot above my game and was absolutely blown away as to what was accomplished, especially by just one developer, he really outdid himself and it's a great case study in game design. Happy to hear he's been featured on Kotaku and your channel and is deserving all the success he's been having, it's a great game! It's inspired me to shoot higher for next jam :)

I just randomly came across your comment and was wondering what the name of your game entry was.
This kind of design really gives me that one of a kind feeling you get from DS and similar extremely well designed games. Well Done!
Freakin cool. So much character.
That's a 10 / 10 game, simple co - op, elegant, and, has a serene quality . . Art - style is, also just . . phenomenal . .

It reminds me of how game dev's back in the NES era had to be creative with the limited tools they had. It feels right at home in that era, back when creativity in game development was key to pulling off an engaging and lucrative product. Plus it's fun.
Definitely a very well thought out game with a very detailed map design! I had difficulties getting used to the controls but is indeed a new and different experience!

I also had difficulty getting the hang of the controls. But it was really enjoyable
excellent game, would be fun 2 player version?
Is it just me, or does such graphic minimalism inspire you to make similar games?

Just you, you could change the art and have the same underlying game. Or change the game but have the same graphics.

I would love to see a full version of this
This is the same dev that made Below The Ocean. It is nice to see his second take on the tether mechanic in a platformer!
Very cool game
Nice video!.. suggestion: your face is not adding anything and it is covering important part of the action :)
Being quoted by Kotaku isn't exactly compliment nowadays. I would be offended if my game was praised there

It seems so awesome. I am gonna play tonight
I recommend you give your character a Viking mead mug (hope you know what I mean) hanging from his waist and then make the checkpoints mead kegs or barrels that he fills up his mug with and then drinks to show a new checkpoint this would also add in the ‘mead aspect better’ or you could make the mead kegs at the end of levels

I agree, that sounds good.
I like the ZX Spectrum aesthetics. It is a good decision when you have very limited time to finish the game and want to focus on making the gameplay as good as possible and not spend time on color coordinating a lot of pixels.
Hey John, did you see the news regarding the unity acquisition? I'm new to game dev, thinking about unity as my engine but lots of people on Twitter advocating for jumping ship to godot or unreal...
@LostRelicGames

A lot of dust in the air, and people love to panic. Unity will be solid choice for a long time to come (LTS is always an option). Godot and Unreal are also not without their own challenges. But my general rule is, stay technologically agnostic - the future is never certain.

Linus and Luke talked about that in the last wan show. I'm not sure abut it but sounds like a bad thing... Only time will tell
This was also one of my favorites from the jam, took me a while to get used to the swing but really fun
Lost Relic Games got a mention in Kotaku? No way! Congrats to both you folks!
Is it bad form though to leverage so much of another published game as a jam entry? IMO no wonder this game shined among others. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel this approach goes against the spirit of what it’s all about. When I’ve done this I’ve preferred using jams as a unique opportunity to try something I’ve never tried before.
It looks like a beautiful little game, with an immediately engaging mechanic.
Jon did you cut your hair!?
Very reminiscent of Knuckles in Chaotix for the Sega 32X! But with much better & intuitive controls!
Hahaha, that's so fun game!
This reminds me a lot of the game Heave Ho.
Regardless of he interesting game mechanics, I find it amazing to see peoples interest in this spectrum style dithered graphics, lighting and color scheme. It just reminds me of those rubbery looking keys, and the 80's 🙃
Has someone already speedrunned this game?
Playability/mechanics wise it reminds me computer 8 bits games from 80s
This is Knuckles' Chaotix done right.
dude, you put your face right where the action is. lol
