@akcandlemaker I would argue that it wouldn't actually be very expensive, as they make voice recording buttons and devices in many different places for fairly cheap. One example that I can think of off the top of my head is Build a Bear Workshop, they have them for a few dollars each, and after that all you would need is a board of some kind to attach them to, and then label them all clearly on both the button itself and its location on the board so the dog never gets confused by the buttons changing position. How expensive it would be really just depends on how many different words the dog knows/utilizes.

Got it in one. If you really think the relationship through, there is absolutely no doubt that that is exactly the dynamic. They sit around, we feed them, pet them, play with them, love them, let them in and out, maybe occasionally take them to the dog park, etc. Pretty good con, when you think about it. I read a scifi story once about a space fairing dog talking to another of the same about exactly that. We get to go to space ... yada yada yada. I guess the turnabout, way back when, was alerting protection, hunting assistance, etc. An amazing relationship like no other on the planet. I saw an anthropologist/archaeologist speculating about when and why we started 'domesticating' the first wolves. I fully suspect it was absolutely the other way round, that they came to us. They really aren't stupid, and they know and appreciate a really good thing when they've got it, unlike many of us. In some respects we are not the masters.

dogs have lived alongside humans for such a long time, bred specifically to be smarter and follow commands to be able to accomplish certain tasks/jobs and even more important to be social, it would make sense for their brains to have adapted at least somewhat to understand speech even if their bodies/throats have not developed to actually talk back to us. this must be very exciting for the dogs and makes you wonder how much of what we say every single day is understood by them just from observing and interacting with us

My son's response, with his dog at his feet and not even making eye contact or looking anywhere near the dog was sit, which she did, and lie down, which she did. The friend immediately changed the topic. I was having a hard time not laughing out loud, but I was good. He slightly changed the topic to say that they don't have emotions, obviously never a dog owner, because he was absolutely clueless in both cases, absolutely no question whatsoever. Either that or he is severely devoid of simple perception. Strange thing is this kid was upper 5% kind of bright, in other areas.

Oh absolutely they can understand and speak to us... my dog has literally learned to say "welcome home, glad you're back" of course it's in sort of a bark "growl" kind of voice, but you can distinctly hear words. He also grumbles and complains when he throws the ball at me and I don't want to pick it up. And they do understand conversations not just tones. This is fascinating, thank you for uploading :D

I have 2 dogs that I always talk to. One dog (Angel a lab mix) is 14, I had her since she was born. When she wants something she comes to me and gives a small woof. I ask her to show me. If her water bowl is empty she lays next to it. If shes hungry she goes to her bed and lays down on it. She understands and communicates to me what she wants. A tap on the door means she wants to come in or go out. Dogs are extremely smart and when you talk to them they learn. Dogs do communicate if you look at them and take the time to what they are saying and if you talk to them a lot they understand meanings and objects.

She's making up her own language, just as humans do. Many languages differ from one another when it comes to sentence making. For instance in English, the rule is as follow: subject / linking verb / complement. Whereas in Turkish it is: Subject / complement / verb. These are just 2 examples, however you can find tons of others. Human tongues have varied and distinguished themselves, if dogs learn to speak, they can definitely create their own dialect, "dogalect" even.

it also reminded me of black mirror. i dont think they will make an episode but I think its a real life episode thats just starting. if it really does mean what its saying some humans might not be able to handle too much "love you, no" or if its constantly saying its in pain. But in a TV episode the owner takes the buttons away and the dog murders them.
