As someone who suffered from depression, i can say the mind does things to cope with trauma. In short, since his life was so bad, his mind had created a "safe place" where everything did go right. Every situation is different, but perhaps his safe place had a different name and lifestyle. These thoughts dont just occure, they can span from childhood to present day. Which would explain why he remembered childhood memories. He probably did hit his head during the accident, and when he woke up his "safe place" memories went from coping thoughts to being real to him. I suffered from this coping method, only i never took those thoughts real.

The first story, honestly, hear me out. His niece ruined his life. I understand needing to know, but he had a new family, an amazing job and was probably taking chemo for his eye. Then the niece had to bring everyone’s attention to him. He lost his family, he lost his job, and he definitely was beyond poor after the insurance company went after him so he wouldn’t be able to afford chemo. And he had amnesia the whole time. It would be different if he was an ass trying to get out of the first family. It’s sad. Truly

Always a good idea to send a guy of whom you’re convinced has 3 evil demons lurking around inside home to hang with the fam for the night. I know it can be confusing to how Fritz got documentation to start a new life but this took place in the late '60s so a lot of that kind of stuff was a lot easier to get. There was no Home or business computers, time when a lot of stuff was done on paper a phone call or fax or something so it was easy to start a new life in a sense. Computers and other technology is what really made it easy to track people and make that stuff harder Plus I think it's like regulations of the federal government states working more together.

💯 Soooo true! Usually your gut feeling is almost always right. I was always taught to listen to that & I've told my kids the same. That bungee jumping story is so sad & super scary. When I was young my oldest cousin (19 at the time) went to Canada for a fun night with friends. (Living in Michigan, only like 20-25 mins away-- it's almost a right of passage to go drinking in Canada since the legal drinking age is 19.) Sadly, her friend that drove had no business driving. My cousin, seated behind the driver, passed away on impact from getting crushed between seats. Even though it's been many years I can still remember what one of her best friends said at the funeral. I guess my cousin had begged her to come out with them that night. She was in college & busy studying, so she declined. I guess being persistent my cousin & friends stopped at her house on the way for one last begging attempt. She didn't end up going & she said it wasn't so much the studying keeping her home, but a terrible gut feeling. She was beside herself at the funeral & kept repeating how she KNEW something bad was gonna happen.😢 So, to make a long story even longer, lol, ALWAYS listen to your gut people!!!!

Actually, in the Story of Larry Bater, there is this effect called a, "Confabulation". A confabulation, basically, happens, when your brain tries to recall something, like a memory, draws a blank and then just decides to produce something that fits the bill. Happens a lot in dementia cases, especially early ones, but also to people with ADHD. Our brain is quite apt in doing so and, for some, this ability is the core reason we can be creative.

And they shouldn't have two people up there at the same time if they aren't ready at the same time and the verbal communication isn't totally clear with two-way understanding confirmed. I'm not too sure I'm buying the "amnesia theory." When someone gets into an accident and loses their memory to amnesia, they aren't going to have another identity ready to go within a couple of days and/or weeks. However there is something to conquering a fear that can remove associated blocks, but I'm sure as any professional therapist would advise though *never when it's an acute phobia so powerful it can induce a myocardial infarction.* She was a story in knowing and accepting ones limits.

I wouldn’t let my fear of heights stop me from getting on a plane to travel because that’d be allowing my fear to control me IMO but thrill seeking - Never. And what comes to mind from MrBallen is all those scuba diving stories where people pass numerous warning to turn around if they’re not a professional, noting others have died and stating that the trip isn’t worth death, but they push on and perish tragically. And I can’t help but think if they listened to that fear response when reading those signs that most of them would have turned around and saved their own lives.

It is really sad that Fritz had a happy, full life, but as Larry, he was miserable. Then here comes his original family finding him, and now Fritz's life is turned upside down. It's such a weird turn that a family member happened to be over in Chicago, a full seven-hour drive from Akron, and just happened to be in the exact place that Fritz was doing a demo so well that a crowd had gathered, thereby drawing the attention of his family member. Life is so odd sometimes, isn't it?

OMG. How horrific! That poor woman! And knowing how freaking dangerous Michael was, HOW did he only get four years of psychiatric care and then is free to live out his life being dangerous? Does anyone else think it would have been harsher punishment in the US or would he get the same punishment? I was just really, really horrified with this case. I watch true crime all the time, but when I heard what he'd done to her, I had to rewind it and I audibly said "oh my God". That says a lot. This guy is dangerous.

So, without knowing the exact medical details, I can explain how that happened. If he was found not guilty of a crime by reason of insanity, he is not criminally culpable. There's is no criminal sentence. In the UK, the judge can however issue a hospital treatment order. This basically says "you had no mens rea, not criminal intent, because you are mentally unwell and that is not your fault. However, your illness means you pose a significant risk to the safety of yourself and/or others and therefore you are ordered to be detained in hospital until such time as you have been treated to the degree that you are no longer a threat" Michael would have been detained to a mental health hospital and been under the treatment of psychiatrists. He would not be allowed to leave hospital until deemed well. 4 years is the average length of stay at a high secure mental health unit, in medium secure its about 2 I think.

People often pass out or suffer a panic attack right before attempting their first bungee jump. I was an EMT in an area with a bungee jump location nearby and firsties not being able to get their first jump over with because they freak out and need medical assistance is common. Yecenia's tragic end is the result of negligence. It's standard protocol for staff to not have the jumper be on the platform until harness and rope are secured. Once on the platform, the jumper must be held on to by at least one staff member until they clearly state that yes, they do want to go through with this. Clearly, neither of these things happened. RIP Yecenia.

That top story reminds me of the story line of one of the most recent Conjuring movies. It was based on a true story about this young boy named David Glatzel who was being possessed by a demon. David's older sister's boyfriend, Arne Johnson, decided to provoke the demon and caused it to leave David and possess Arne. Arne then went and committed a murder. It was the first known court case in US history where the defense claimed demonic possession as the cause for Arne's actions.

The Larry and Fritz story absolutely baffles me. Of all of the stories I've heard from you, this one is the most baffling. Where did the childhood memories of Fritz come from? How did he have documents verifying he was Fritz? It's very confusing. Also, I can't imagine how hard losing your loved one twice would be. It's bad enough that they thought he died/went missing in a storm, but them to find him, and have him tell you he doesn't even know you would be heartbreaking. Then you prove to him that he is in fact your loved one and he's back in your life, only to lose him to cancer a year later. ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATING.

It's the combination of a lot of things that makes his storytelling so unique. The emotion he conveys through his face, movements, images shared when telling the story is a huge part of it. Another large part of it is the telling of the story through the first person's perspective.

I think what makes Mr. Ballen an effective storyteller is that he is not trying to be dramatic with scary voices etc. He is just a guy speaking to us in the same tone he would describe something normal, like what happened on the way to the grocery store. It lends his stories a sincerity and realism you don't find in other scary storyteller channels.

I fully agree. It will turn me off a channel very quickly if there is a goofy dramatic voice when there are such heavy real events at play. Some things deserve respect when spoken about and it feels like Mr. Ballen gets that.

Second story is so sad. I read about it a while back but had no idea she died of a heart attack halfway. That sounds really unlikely. There are 3 seconds between jumping and impact. Not enough time to have a heart attack and die. Sounds to me like the lawyers for the bungee jumping company were using that to limit their liability and negligence.

i don’t hear very many people talking about the first story (obviously because the rest are so amazing and well told as well) BUT one detail stood out to me so hard that i had to wake my sleeping fiance up to tell her. How does a man with seemingly no memory (or false memories) randomly show up in a town thousands of miles away, with documentation proving he is a man who he wasn’t. A man who, by all accounts, never existed. And it may have been decades ago but this documentation was good enough to get him employment at not just a restaurant, but also as a sports broadcaster on live television, as well as allow him to adopt a child and have a bank account and get married??? It is truly baffling

He definitely wanted to escape his old life. Picked the most dangerous time to go in the water to make it seem more likely he died. With the documentation too and no reports of an incident that caused the “amnesia”, I’m almost certain he was just lying. He had terminal cancer and figured this was his one shot to live the way he wanted and faked his death and started a new life. I don’t even understand how it has been a mystery seems so clear.

Even without the possibility of that mistake, why would they put someone in a position where they aren't connected to the cord and could lose their balance or any number of things and fall to their death? It sounds to me like those people need to be handled the same way as the guy with the skydiving service/business or whatever. Having someone's life in your hands should be treated as such.
