I'm not a lawyer but I would say, if you bought the game, and you didn't sell the game, then it is ethical to download a ROM or rip from your cartridge / digital game. Downloading is still illegal, but it's absolutely ethical in my opinion.

Similarly, any of the romhacks you download from the workshop are uncompressed roms too.

The main thing is just stick with it (or use a guide to cheese). I don't think Elden Ring is that difficult. I'm not saying I wouldn't die just as much or more. I've barely played it (I don't own it. Is in the queue, I'll get there or not). It is definitely a game that you have to learn to play thru, takes time but if it otherwise interests you, give it a go. Is not a finish far game. I'm with you on building tangible real world skills. My larger issue with Elden Ring is the aesthetics, which is weird, because Resident Evil doesn't bother me, though it had some stuff I could do without. I find Nino Kuni charming, but I know some people find it ugly. I get past the art style of some other games that aren't my thing. The From Soft art is great, some of it is even gorgeous, but other stuff is quite off putting. I don't got time for that.

I believe they dont have pause in Elden Ring because of invasions, and to give the game a constant feel similar to MMOs. Ultimately a more persistent world. I do however agree that the player should be able to choose. The ones who doesn't want pvp can play offline anyway. That said, the feeling you get after mastering these games and the life lessons they teach can't be achieved without its difficulty. It teaches consistency and persistence, how to learn new skills and build habits to succeed in the game, which interestingly translates to real life. And most importantly, it teaches patience.

The trackpads are awesome for shooters and fighting games. (if you know how to set them up). for shooters: limit vertical aim sensitivity greatly, so your left/right swipes are accurate. and use gyro for vertical aiming. similar to flick-stick. but much less confusing. and better! For fighters: disable 'click' and disable 'up' direction, and place 'up' on right-bumper (so theres no accidental jumps)

Accessibility options of course can go the other way too. Add *MORE* things to be more difficult or demanding for players who have become bored or seeking more challenges. A couple examples off the top of my head are Kingdom Hearts 3, pretty much all rhythm games, and recently Starfield. Kingdom Hearts games also do the "no-pausing" system but is pretty good. Item screens do not pause on combat nor are even accessible. All items must be pre-equipped and menu controlled with the dpad akin to old school Final Fantasy games. And if you run out that's it. Even with all this, there *IS* still a pause menu. And the upgraded bosses in KH3 DLC are far harder than anything in Soulslikes. Speed, reaction, and mechanical knowledge ceilings are higher in KH3 and the devs made sure of it for the DLC bosses. Those bosses will not waste their time with pushover players lol.

Some important context with those devices that come loaded with roms. They're being sold by Chinese sellers. Sellers in China don't have to care about Nintendo trying to come after them when they're in China, even if Nintendo did, it would be such a waste of time and money for them that they probably wouldn't bother. The worst that happens is their listing gets taken down or their account gets banned. Both of which don't matter, because they can just make another listing or account. It's a bit different with a company like Anbernic doing it, but there's no stopping the individual sellers.

On the topic of ROM sets, one of the issues is that if the OS that it ships with doesn't give you the ability to scrape art, there are likely to be significant complications with adding your own box art. They would have to make sure the OS is compatible with Screenscraper and I don't think that's always possible. On the 35XX devices, the stock firmware is a perfect example of this. When I added more ROMS and box art, the box art was the wrong pixel dimensions and looked squished to the point of pointlessness.

I thought the pause argument was a bit ridiculous. Is it such a big deal that you die in the videogame? I have 4 dogs, I need to be tending them all the time. I have played Elden Ring twice and yes, sometimes that means I get killed because I am distracted. It's not a big deal, this is a game where you die all the time. So literally just stop tending the game and you'll be back at the site of grace, you lose your runes but you can easily get them back. I think perhaps part of the philosophy of the game is to learn to accept defeat. The game can't be paused and that's just... the way it is.

Taki Udon did a video a while back, I believe about an Anbernic device, but he noted this was pretty standard with all the Chinese handhelds, where they appeased Western sensibilities by removing the ROMsets from the ones they shipped overseas, but left them all in on the Chinese stock. China's current culture/mindset is to not care at all about copyright--IP theft is commonplace and considered the norm there, even encouraged if it lets them get ahead. And as long as people keep supporting those devices, they'll keep doing it. So if you truly want to protect emulator developers from the likes of Nintendo, the first step is to show that we don't support companies making money distributing ROMs on their devices, so Nintendo can't keep making the argument that emulation automatically = piracy.

  • @MrNagano00

I think there are people arguing apples to oranges with fromsoft having a pause mechanic. Most games the gameplay pauses in menus while fromsoft doesn't. This means you can't escape the world as your shifting gear and spells around, so you can't do this while in combat. It doesn't stop to look in your bag kind of thing. While, I do support a proper pause that simply suspends the game without breaking the prior reason the menu doesn't pause. I wouldn't be surprised that this is more of a technical limitation due to the online invasion implementations.

You can pause the game by going into a specific menu (item descriptions, it's pretty much a glitch), so we know it's not a technical reason. It's a design choice, they don't want you looking in your bag but they also don't want you catching your breath either.

With Elden Ring and pausing, I think the devs just don't care. The game has terrible performance, stuttering, bad frametimes, 60 fps locked and other technical issues. Not saying its right, but they focus more on gameplay and content than improving the technical side or adding accessibility.

I was interested in picking up the Mass Effect trilogy for $6 but some of the comments said it required always being online to sign into EA Origins every time you try to play, and I was hoping to play through them (never played any Mass Effect game) on my Steam deck and being restricted to only being able to play it at home would urk me a bit. Can anybody 1) Confirm whether or not you have to sign in every time vs a 1 time sign in for registration. 2) tell me how the performance has been on Steam deck (or any other x86 handheld)? Tyvm in advance! :)

Id be fine with a steam controller 2 that was just the Deck but without a screen. However I'd prefer if we got something more iterative upon the original SC. That trackpad centric design is what I want. I don't like the awkward placement of the trackpads on the Deck. It's fine for a handheld that needs to include everything. But I have plenty of controllers with 2 sticks, let me have a steam controller with 2 trackpads and maybe 1 stick.

re: "steam controller" i do want trackpads. Mostly space-sim type games for mouse/cursor input, eg: Avorion in the build menus, or even Delta V: Rings of Saturn. I don't do RTS, but sometimes useful in CRGs or other things technically with controller support, or having a mouse pad(s) is just easier at times. Rumble = meh, 2 vs 4 back buttons i'm torn on, as sometimes you want all 4, but 2+radials works mostly too.

On the pause button I think every single player game should be pausable no matter what, I don't think it ever ads to the game that controller disconnects/emergency bathroom breaks is an instant loss.

On the topic of Elden Ring. Those kind of games aren't typically my kind of game due to the difficulty, though I have played a bit of Elden Ring. So the existence or lack thereof of a pause button doesn't really matter to me. I can see both sides of it why some would want it and others not. But at the end of the day, these games are designed in a specific manner, with their own quirks and all. The people that have stuck with the games for the past decade or more all tend to gravitate towards it due to how easy and honestly kind of dumbed down games were and still are becoming. Some of my favorite games have easy modes or other ways to mitigate any and all difficulty and yet people still find ways to complain about meeting ANY challenge that can't be beaten by holding forward. So I can definitely see why the Souls fans tend to be more strongly against most of the suggestions. Elden Ring also made some adjustments that made it a lot more accessible to newcomers. The end result is that more people got into the series and now are demanding Fromsoft make more changes to appeal to even more mainstream audiences. The problem I have with that is that everything else is pretty much already catered to that audience. Not everything needs to appeal to everybody all at once. Sometimes it is okay for a niche product to appeal to just a niche audience. You and others say "Well you don't have to use the pause button" but this ignores what is reality right now. There is no intended pause button in Elden Ring or the other Soulsborne games. They intentionally designed the games without that and though there are workarounds that people have discovered, the intented experience is for the world to not be able to be paused. The fans of these games seem to prefer it that way, they are the ones that bought the Soulsborne games in the past and they were the most hyped for Elden Ring. They like these games as they are. Ultimately, any change would have to be made by them and if they feel that it isn't worth compromising their vision (even if a pause button doesn't seem like a big deal to you, it may to them), then I would bet they likely won't add one. Just like how Nintendo was adamant on having the durability mechanic in BOTW and TOTK and didn't take it out despite people complaining. Now though I didn't play a lot of ER, from what I played I don't think it really needs a pause button either. As long as I sat my character away from enemies, they would generally have been safe if I needed to go somewhere. Worst comes to worse, your character dies and you go back to where they died to get your runes back, even if you die again runes are easy to get. Death in these games isn't really that big of a deal. if you die in a boss battle, you respawn outside of the room and are safe. And if you have a kid that is in danger for some reason, the last thing on my mind would be to pause, at that point I would deal with the kid and put the game down until they were asleep or something. All of that said, if you really want to use a pause button, somebody mentioned a mod that added it.

One of the GKD things was in development, the GKD guy was wanting to work with community devs, was taking code from them, but wouldn't follow open source because he was like "other companies will steal my IP." So it was fine for him to take code from the open source community but not for them to expect him to open source his code. Rediculous, but again, considering they were all stealing from each other to begin with... Yeah.

I do think not all games are for everyone. If you want an easy mode for the souls games, then yeah, they are probably not for you. the thing is the difficulty, or the challenge, in them are a feature. a core concept of the game. if you remove that, you no longer play the same game. it's like taking away part of the story in another game, because a lot of people didn't feel comfortable with it. or a lot of people saying, doom games are way too violent, we need to remove that, so they change them and now it's like all other shooters at this point. if you still want to experience the story or art or whatever of a souls game, but you can't keep up with the difficulty, then watch a stream or a walkthrough. for me, this is essentially the same thing with movies. not all movies are for everyone. if you don't like horrors, you skip horror movies, you don't cry for them to retell the same story but censor the horror stuff and make it more action or drama like so you can watch it. also if we return to games, even at the moment not all games are for everyone. if a game is rated R, people don't cry for devs to remove the things that make it R so kids can play it. no kids skip it. it's not for them. That being said, i agree with the pause discussion. generally a pause will not make the game easier, i guess you can get a breather or something, but will that really help? it would probably take you out of the zone. i hear there is no pause because of the online aspect of the game - invasions or whatever they are called, but then why not have them for offline play, or why not disabling the pause only during an active invasion? P.S. I'm not even a hardcore soulslikes player. hell i don't even own any of the souls games, i have like 2 or 3 indie soulslikes, and i barely play them, exactly because of the things said above. i'm not very good at them, i don't have the time to be good at them. and that takes me out of their audience, is that a bummer? yeah, but i accept it because they are not meant for me.

Regarding Elden Rings accessibility: My first playthrough I had zero idea what to do so I followed a guide till the end (Fighting Cowboy). Still had tons of fun. After a break I tried to make a second character but had a really difficult time getting started. I basically cant play the game unless I cheese some dragons to get a huge level up advantage. If I had to slowly level up by incrementally fighting enemies at my level it would take me dozens of hours to grind. So I would say the fact that you can cheese those big bosses and get a huge level up advantage is a form of accessibility. Not to mention there's hundreds of guides online to follow if you want to do a specific build or get through a dungeon or boss. The game doesnt hold your hand but it's not completely impossible either.

Games that don't have a pause button just piss me off. At first I figured, well, it's an MMORPG--I just won't play World of Warcraft. Now, they seem to think we want that crap in our offline games. To be fair Steam Deck and Xbox let you to suspend the game and save its state--perhaps more useful on a Steam Deck that you're running on battery power and want to conserve energy anyway. But on a console I don't have those restraints and should be able to pause it to go take a piss and maybe warm up some Hot Pockets or something, without having to waste SSD writes saving the game's state and then having to reload it entirely.

Nintendo can't go after the consumer because they wouldn't have case to do so in terms of suing the only thing they can do with the consumer data is to look up within their own database is to ban their console from playing online. Also if you own your own copy of Shredder's revenge for example there are instructions out there on how to port the game to Android. As a note I have to say I havent played the remaster, maybe they fixed some things there (?) and in reality I abandoned it pretty early, but I had no intention to play through something that felt boring for me at the time with a hope that it gets better

That would be funny, but they would need a sewing department for that xD

I think there is a big difference between getting roms on emulation devices that cannot be bought new anywhere else and games that can be bought online and played on modern devices.

These companies are exchanging ROMs for money. Big no-no, Downloading ROMs you can't get anywhere because they aren't available is A-Okay in my book. But no one should be selling the ROMs unless they are the people that own the actual IP.

@@NerdNest it's still piracy. It shouldn't be A-Okay in your book. You have no right to be in possession of some companies copyrighted rom. Just because you can't get it any other way doesn't mean it's A-Okay.

I'm not going to say you're wrong here. Because legally and technically, you're not. But if they won't give us a way to give them money. That's on them. Game Preservation is more important than giant corporations bottom lines in my opinion. Game companies put their old ROMs up on Steam for purchase, I'd bet we'd see a lot less piracy.

@@cheeeeezewizzz I don't think anyone was proposing forcing easy mode on anyone. The point is to provide options rather than forcing players into one lane.
