We here at ShortCircuit need a top-of-the-line PC to make sure we're pushing monitors to their limit, so when Maingear heard we needed a new PC with a 4090, they sent over one of their new custom MG-1 PCs to replace the great (but bright) Nerdforge PC. Linus is here to take a look at how Maingear delivers their PCs and if Shroud's investment was a sound one.
PC Specs:
Nvidia RTX 4090
Intel I9-13900k
Maximus hero board
1TB Solidigm P44
32GB XPG Lancer 6000MHz DDR5

Expandable foam bags have made it "slightly" bearable to ship PCs, however, I've still had issues shipping via Air Freight (they love to tear apart the AIO/loop to test the liquid).

@nosoyallowed828 Yes, I watched the video.... and I really don't see a problem. The card was supported by the case, plus the extra GPU support. The PC worked when he plugged it in (as if it wouldn't...). I'm not saying anyone should be deliberately rough with hardware, but it's far less delicate than the majority of histrionic whiners seem to understand. I spent 3+ years working in a mobile gas laboratory built into a 40ft shipping container. Every week or 2, the lab would be moved on the back of a truck over extremely rough dirt roads, then dumped on the ground at the new site. Far from delicate handling. The only thing we put in a Pelican case for a move was a Chromatograph, and even that stayed in the lab under a bench, None of the standard rack mounted computers, or the desktop computers (all with spinning drives) failed due to loose connections, or bits breaking off. Never had monitors fall off the walls either. Had a couple of monitor power cables come loose, and an unsecured air-conditioner come out of the wall and smash itself on the floor half way across the lab, but that was it. Toughen up, "dude".

It's pretty cool, as configured that PC is $5656 USD (7674.91 Canadian), to build a similarly situated PC without the custom graphic and in a more streamlined but still acceptable case (Corsair iCUE 5000x) will cost you about $4600 Freedom Dollars (6241.97 Canadian). Honestly, given the price of the components splitting $500 to custom graphics and $500 to warranty that is better than the independent manufacturer warranties might be a good deal for someone looking for a cool, more custom PC but lacks the building experience to dare try with the price of these parts. Not too bad of an option, it could be a little lower in price as competitors offer similar PCs without the custom graphic and with the same warranty at around the home-build price, Cyberpowerpc for instance comes in at $4763 in good old American currency (6463.15 Canadian). One competitor known for being overpriced, OriginPC does come in higher for the same deal including a custom graphic at $5,663 USD, which is a whole $7 more expensive. I'd give this a 5/10, probably just build it yourself but if you got hands like Linus and you drop everything spend the cash to not have your GPU slam into the floor at mach-7

I don't care about MSRP, I care about the actual price you know? The GPU these days is usually more than half the price of the total build. @@GSP-76 with this new generation of parts I don't know that a custom loop is an upgrade anymore than a water bucket would be an upgrade over a cup when fighting a wildfire. Sure, it's technically better, but your parts will still run 100c+ and any performance increase at that level is unnecessary. It'd be like adding 3% more top speed to a Veyron so you can get to work on time, but the roads you use are packed with traffic and you can't even get to half of your top speed anyway. It just doesn't make a lot of sense, but hey some people only want the best right?
@GSP-76

@@explodatedfaces It's a huge upgrade over an AIO when done right. Regardless, even if you don't do that, for the price being charged, an 011 EVO should have been used or a case in that class. You can still install custom RGB plates to the front of that case too.
When I worked at a local IT/Computer repair shop and one of our longest business clients called and asked if we could get his grandsons PC setup as they ordered him one. I was not expecting to arrive at a huge house and then be greeted with a monster sized MainGear with a custom loop that I needed to fill. At first I was a bit offput because... damn you're spoiled kid... but after working with it I was astounded at the attention to detail. There was the fluid, the instructions that anyone could follow, a recovery media and all the manuals needed. The build itself was immaculate and the entire time I was there I was in awe. It was like seeing a Ferrari and getting to drive it a bit too ha!, had to test it out to make sure everything was good! Nonetheless. it left a very positive view of that company; definitely seemed like quality. Not for me though, I like to build mine too much

Can you do a video on motion blur? If someone with influence could explain the effects it can have with causing motion sickness/headaches, and advocate for all console games to include the option to disable it, that would be great. Or even better, if Microsoft/Sony could include a filter in the store to show if a game has the ability to disable motion blur. For some people (like me), disabling motion blur is not just a preference, it's an accessibility issue. The most recent Gears of War game (for example) has motion blur, no option to turn it off on Xbox, and I couldn't tolerate playing it unless I used my PC. I would literally get sick and have a migraine after about 15 minutes of gaming. Edit: Sorry this is somewhat irrelevant, but I saw you disable motion blur when trying Cyberpunk on this Maingear PC. Depending on where you live - it can certainly be easier or harder. But to start: What is the "latte factor" - Latte, Cocacola, big mac or whatever else. In other words: What is the thing you consistently spend small amounts of money on, that you could realistically do without? If you can figure that out - you can absolutely put the money for nice system together in a year or two. That being said - where income is low vs. the price of things, it can be extremely tough and I don't have a good answer for that situation. Breaking into content creation is a difficult up hill battle - but is possible. Starting a business takes investment and figuring out a market (and if you live in a low population area, it's really tough). This being said - if you are willing to scavange old furniture, and put some work into sanding / refinishing it - you might very well be able to put together a decent side hustle, and even pick up odd jobs here and there to squirrel away money. Shy of being lucky AF, there aren't any short cuts - but the first step is asking "how can I" - and going through and figuring out the path(s) that will help you. Get out there and do it.
As a recent purchaser of a customer maingear mg-1, i luuuuuvv it. went with a 360mm aio cooler, gtx 4060ti 16gb (yes i know bad choice), and an amd 7800x3d, complimented with 32gb of ram and all that for only around 300-400 more than what pcpartpicker was saying I'd pay to build myself. Жыл бұрын
The positioning is fine, its not optimal but it is fine (tubes at the bottom would be optimal but the 4090 is in the way, and don't think 360mm will fit in the top of the case). The only definitely bad positioning is having the pump at the top of the loop, with the positioning of having the tubes at the top you might get some extra gurgling noise but that should be it. If there is sufficient air in the aio in the loop to be causing a problem in that orientation then the aio needs to be RMA'd.

Dear Linus Can you please gift me a gaming setup for this new year? Kind Regard and Happy New Year.
THE AMOUNT OF ANXIETY I GOT WHEN HE SMACKED THE 4090.... DONT DO IT TO ME

Seems it was so intense that your caps-lock is stuck in the 'on' position. Perhaps you should consult someone about abnormal levels of anxiety caused by, well, nothing, really. Good luck, and I hope you find the help you need.

not anxiety for me, it was like "what are you doing wtf!?" moment.
the fact than any argb connectors stay connected in shipping is a miracle. Those connectors should never have been ratified any some kind of standard. Seems like mine come loose by themselves without even touching the case let alone having UPS throw it around inside a truck.
Got my MG-1 Legendary (13900K, 4080) yesterday and it lives up to the high expectations. Packaging and build quality are excellent, and live up to this video (minus the hard case for shipping). No bloatware. In 3DMark benchmarks that I've run it's consistently exceeded the average score for this hardware. Running games the temps and fan speeds are well below what I expected from this hardware. The custom front plate is an awesome touch too. Their blacks on the printed plate err more toward grey than true black, but it's not bad. Brighter colors look very nice. Overall, highly recommend if you're willing to spend a bit more to have the build quality, warranty, customization, and ease they offer.

1300 watt potential is like running a high powered microwave all the time 🌩. I wonder what it actually uses at various loads. I'm an efficiency fanatic. Does it show?

it be running as 1300 watt, no more no less, efficiency fanatic? so you underclock your cpu/gpu? or do you think your a fanatic :P?

@@testjeaapiel9707 I think he means what kind of power it draws from the wall socket because the conversion isnt 100% efficient, thats why ratings such as 80 plus gold exist to show how efficient it is

@@scott420 If its 1300 watt, its max 1300 watt, its never gonna be 1500 watt. the higher efficiency you have, less power goes up into heat. but its still max 1300 watt.

The PSU will just draw as much as it requires for that moment based on the hardware demands, so if the system only needs 250 watt at idle that's all you'll use. It won't always draw 1300 watts. The 80+ rating is a good indicator to overall efficiency of the PSU. What a higher rated PSU does do is let you benefit from greater efficiency at higher current draw (and improved power factor at midrange loads). So as you begin to approach 1 kilowatt your PSU won't be starting to sag across its rails as much, nor should it struggle as much to deal with very brief but very high transient load spikes which seem to be becoming the norm with chungus GPUs. If you undervolt and underclock the GPU and undervolt the CPU, you'll probably never draw more than 500-600 watts at the wall during almost all workloads. Best way to find out is to run your machine off a UPS with some monitoring built in (or through an inline power monitor socket). I strongly suggest a good UPS with Active Power Factor Correction as insurance for your $$$ rig. But with the beefier PSUs, having the headroom is a big benefit when you want to open the taps or seriously overclock and remove power limits.

@@testjeaapiel9707 the psu is rated for 1300W, it should be able to pull 1500W without any issues but then you are risking tripping the security or straight up frying it.
I have my mg-1 shroud gold edition orders and on the way, wasn’t sure about Mai gear but this is reassuring
Do you think that it would be a good idea to pack the power cable inside the case at the bottom before the expanding bags are added? So that you need to remove them before you can boot it up. Assuming of course that they don't have a spare power cable to hand, however I'd hope that people with spare power cables laying around would know to remove the foam bags.
I bought a Maingear PC during the pandemic when finding parts for a reasonable price was nearly impossible. I've been very happy with my choice. Price was reasonable and I got exactly what I wanted with no issues except 1 of my RGB Fan headers came loose in shipping.
So did Main Gear pay so that their computer would be the showcase computer for Short Circuit?
@The_Noblest_Roman
Жыл бұрын
If they paid, they would be explicitly listed as the sponsor. In a video like this (and most ShortCircuit videos) it's a more symbiotic arrangement where the companies send their product for free to get exposure to the audience for advertising purposes, while the channel gets a hopefully compelling source of content for their video. Some manufacturers may even want the review product back afterwards, depending on the item. The big difference is that if the video is sponsored, the manufacturer gets some editorial control and can dictate certain talking points. In a regular video like this they're providing the "topic" (the product to be showcased) while the host gives their first impressions, and the manufacturer has no editorial control.

@@The_Noblest_Roman It's far from ideal when the supplier knows exactly which PC is going to the reviewer though.
Why though is the RGB in the changeable front cover, not on a separate (changeable) one, so if you wanna change the design it's both cheaper and less wasteful as you only switch out a printed plate. The diffuser could be on the design plate to give a smooth surface, so it still would look monolithic.

I was looking at how that foam was placed and had a feeling it was going to fall when he removed it and as expected from Linus Drop Tips, it did fall, but it got edited out.
I liked the Cyberpunk PC Martina made for you guys a lot more. Seeing it get replaced with Shroud's more generic looking (cute front panels aside) new PC builder PC is a disappointment.
Don't know if I'd call the maingear a showcase pc but they looking like a solid prebuilt option!
Honestly I'm thinking of just buying the case and psu. That front panel is honestly priceless. It instantly changes the look of your PC, and you can make it whatever you want. I'd honestly just get a fully built one just for that feature, and that's saying something coming from a person adamant on just Frankensteining builds for cheap
Would the bag poses a risk when Expanding? If it pushes on the gpu to much could it cause damage to the PCI or gpu? wouldn't that be a issue
Ha! The Room reference at 8:16 :D
I bought a small form factor from MainGear and had the very same experience! I have built my own machines since my first 286 and have never been so happy with a PC!
I love the casual side of ShortCircuit
Wish cases would put way more cable tie mounts.
I hear: "playing Carmageddon here" I see you're a man of culture as well

"oh hi Mark" come on! Not even a chuckle? That's a classic!!!
that Cooler Master gpu anti sag tower doesn't have logo on retail ones too. I have one and its the same as in Maingear PC.
What's up with the 4:56 cut? The plastic thingy clearly falls out but then there's a retake where the bag is put back and the plastic thingy is untouched.
nice front airflow
Sorry for the stupid question, but what software or program was he using to determine the lows and 1%s of the gpu in the top right? I know steam has a built in one, but i wanna be able to monitor the temp if possible and frames. Thanks!
Dude this looks great, i would love to see a actual review tho. So far seems pretty good but I need to know more about it
Maingear coming in with the trolling almost as good as D-Brand! epic
I've bought two maingear PCs in years past and had excellent experiences both time. The price was a less pleasant experience, but it was well worth it!
Wait, are those expanding foam bags really that expensive? I work at a place that does packing (general packing for shipping) and we'll throw a bunch of those into some boxes to fill space.
Off topic but: I love linus. Took me many years to finally realize it but a few months ago I saw him laughing at himself for the crying on livestream from the "im thinking of retiring" thing. It was such a vulnerable moment and I am glad he now can laugh at it. Also his breakdown of LMG spending and what not and being transparent gave me a lot of respect for him.
