Gaming is fine. The industry is expected to continue seeing significant growth, the problem is largely down to unsustainable practices and brand damage in the AAA sphere. Square is now paying for two decades of bad financial decisions.

@Outrack Also the fact that the new mass market demographic doesn't want games like this. Those players are playing cod, fortnite and free to play games. It's why pretty much every console exclusive flopped or barely broke even this generation. I think us true hardcore gamers at this point who enjoy niche genres and multiple genres just need to accept these companies do not care about us anymore.

@@chozochiefxiii3298 The current market is the same as the old one in that they just want fun and engaging experiences, the problem is more with the higher level of effort developers put into games with aggressive monetization against single-sales titles. Players have just become accustomed to expecting poor experiences from so-called "hardcore" games because that's kind of what we've been getting for a while now. From an industry perspective, I think it's a little disingenuous to say the current generation of consumers is the reason console exclusives have been struggling to break even - there are way more prevalent reasons with the most concerning being unsustainable practices and rampant over-expenditure. Spider-Man 2 being a prime example as they needed to sell 10 mil units before breaking even as they had a budget of $400m and 300+ staff; AAA studios are just far too large and they're trying to pass the burden of this onto the consumers by increasing unit cost instead of addressing the issue (contrary to what most people say, games aren't actually more expensive to make now - they only are because you have 20 people needlessly assigned to roles that used to require only 2). I'd also say that the companies do care, they're just being mindlessly run by "money" people that have little understanding of how the industry works which is why so many of the big houses are facing a collapse despite the industry being healthier than it's ever been. If you want hope, trends show that gen Z have started diving into retro games and find them genuinely more enjoyable than current offerings as they were made to be fun, and come without all of the nonsense plaguing games over the last 20 years (engagement figures, DLC incentives, etc)... All of the staff being let go aren't sitting idle, they're forming new companies with plans to produce middle-scale projects akin to the PS2 era, so we'll see a natural course correction within the next decade.

@@chozochiefxiii3298 This is kind of the catch-22 problem with modern AAA. The budgets are so huge that sales numbers must reach astronomical heights to break even, that the core player base simply isn't large enough to make the difference, so companies water down the product to "appeal to a wider audience." This is proving to be a misplaced approach because the "wider" audience only exists on Twitter, and the core audience ends up feeling ostracized and won't buy, and sales numbers fall.

There is no audience for these games on the xbox first of all. And the reason they are in this mess is not their exclusive dealings but poor management. Not enter an exclusivity deal with sony. While not just in sales, but profitability would have been to scale back the entire project. Make it less costly and be something(that while compromised) would have been able to be on the switch(even streaming/cloud version). The fact is that the demographics for the PS5 ownership base isn't best inline with one's who would be most likely to play a ff7 remake project. It's not the 90's/early 00's anymore, PlayStation doesn't have the iron grip on the japanese market (it's an after thought there) or jrpg fans that they used to, they have been leaving the PlayStation ecosystem for Nintendo and PC for years. It's part of why FF and square enix has been sinking into irrelevance.

@@ericp631 so your advocating them compromising their vision for their games for profit? And where is the FF market, especially ff7 in particular, if not the ps? You say PC, what is the sales numbers between the two again? The reason FF7 remake is at the scale it is. Now is because they worked with Sony and got their help through finding ad well as hands to make the game what it is. Which is also partly why it’s temporarily exclusive to that platform now. Rebirth will also come to PC in time just like Remake did and just like XVI will too. Trying to make the game at the scale it is and quality simultaneously release it for PS and PC and oils have cost more and take more time. That’s why they released it first on PS with their aid and PC later. The Developer said as much himself. I’m not ok with them compromising their vision and quality for the games just so they can release it to more platforms at the same time at a chance to MAYBE make more money. I do think (this is just my own opinion, no knowledge to back it up) Sony probably has a first look deal for exclusivity for it in place already. Like if they want to make it exclusive, they can for a period of time before SE makes it available to other platforms, and if they choose not to then SE can just make it available to all platforms off the bat once they decline it.

@@urazz7739 The thing is the deal involved funding from Sony. If they have been using said funds to make part 3 they have no choice legally but to make it exclusive if Sony demands it or face a lawsuit which could lead to massive amounts of the profits being seized by Sony. Granted ideally Sony has lost enough money on the deal too that they'd consider making it multiplatform just so they can make more cash on the project from whatever amount of FFVIIR sales they get but if Sony continues to be as brain dead as they have been lately (Helldivers, Stellar Blade, etc) history will probably repeat itself with part 3 being exclusive (which is my prediction of how things will go down as I don't have faith in Sony to correct itself as long as its HQ is in CA). Now for all FF games after VIIR part 3 (whether it be new, ports, remakes, spin offs) they can tell Sony to piss off with the exclusivity if they feel like it as long s they don't take funding from Sony for said games...which I guess will mainly come down to if SE starts budgeting their games smartly and not budgeting them like the games will make 8 million copies sold or more on release (let me be blunt, they will never. Linear Story driven jrpgs like FF have a hard cap of about 3 to 5 million sales on release date/year...about 1.5 to 2 being hardcore jrpg players and then the rest being casuals not too interested in jrpgs but got interested in the game due to the marketing phase doing a good enough job to draw interest. As such SE should rework how they budget stuff, even if it means a cut to graphics, so that their budget will be high enough that only making about 1.5 million in sales will not cause an issue with SE's bottom line...otherwise they need to make the game a different genre (open world wrpg like game/shooter/sports/etc which SE hasn't had a great track record with and much experience with tbh (ya they had Tomb Raider but they sold the studio that makes it and it was a studio SE bought at one point). And on the gamers part we gotta accept that if we do want these linear story driven jrpgs we'll probably need to accept graphics and other aspects that are bloating the costs of these games being cut a bit to make the project sustainable as that is also a reason for SE's problem on top of the exclusivity BS).

It still ultimately comes down to releasing good, complete games that people will enjoy playing and want to pick up on release, at full price if they hope to hit the sales figures they want. Obviously there are FF fans that will do so immediately on its PC release, but you’ve got plenty of general fans who may not do so until a big sale at the end of the year, or in a couple of years when part 3 drops, and they have to acknowledge and be prepared for that as well.

But if you think any Final Fantasy game is selling an equal share on Xbox as it does on PS5 then every opinion you have is null in this comment section. Quite honestly they have to get on Switch and if that means scaling back graphics then they need to do so. The Xbox is pretty irrelevant for Japanese games, as it has been since the early years when they're expectations were that Fable would do for RPGs what Halo did for everything else and wipe out Japanese game genres as a worldwide phenomenon.

Square is doing a smart move. Yes, they are making "less" profits asap. In the long run, they are staggering profits and able to pay less on taxes per year. Offsetting profits with expensis "paying employees" and paying the companies higher-ups even more. You get the illusion that your not making money. Square as an entity can pay for everything before taxes are taken, and can expense anything "related" to the company.

It’s the same old story really, companies get big, then too big when the economy was booming, economy begins to “correct” then they have to cut spending and excess and “reorganize” which means laying off non-essential staff generally. Rise and fall is normal, if they adapt, they’ll survive, if not then they’ll die. It’s similar to the movie industry chasing bigger and bigger paychecks, with bigger and bigger budgets but they need to make better smaller budget movies. The super hero formula is done.

Console exclusivity has always been so stupid. From an accessibility standpoint, from a preservation standpoint, and now from a sales standpoint. Games cost so much to make now, why would you gimp yourself by only selling to one platform? I would have bought FF16 day one if it released on PC, and I know plenty of others would have as well. Going multiplatform is a good move, and maybe needing to tone games down for Nintendo systems will be a good thing, not having to spend so much trying to push graphics so hard. Hell, lower system requirements could even net them more sales since it would open up their games to people with weaker PCs.

Having an FF exclusive to one platform kills sales potential. In addition to that, putting in alot of money and years to develop one title, like putting all your eggs in one basket. Not only are they spending too much money, they can't also make it back due to the restrictions exclusivity creates! I am no business expert...just operating with logic here. They need to cut down cost of making games, and release them on multiple platforms on day one if possible. Cause the more they waste time the less interest people will get. By the time they release x game 1 year later on PC, well most people have already moved to the next great game. I hope things work out for SE eventually! As usual great video NSP!❤😁

Part 3 is unlikely to be multiplatform on release. The FFVIIR project from part 1 to now has been partially funded by Sony and SE said they cold only get the remake in progress with Sony's funding so if Sony wants it exclusive for a period of time SE can't stop it from happening with the VIIR project. Any future FF project doesn't need to do this though as long as SE learns how to budget the games better (if it means backing off from graphics from what XVI or VIIR did then they need to back off a bit if that's the only way to ensure they profit (let's be clear linear story driven jrpgs like FF do not sell the amount that the budget's SE is trying to push...at most you're looking at about 1.5 million jrpg players who'll likely buy the games and maybe another 1 to 3 million more casual players who may just pick up the game if they market the game well to gather interest in the games for the release of the game...maybe they'll get a few more million post release/after porting the game on top of that but that's about it...jprgs will usually at most sell to ~3 to 5 million unique players (only buy the game 1x) on release and that only applies ot the largest jrpg IPs, for the small to mid size you're looking at about ~1 million sales total in the first few years. SE has to start budgeting their game with lower sales expectations plain and simple (basically they need to budget games with the idea they'll make no more than 1.5 million sales or so so the budget needs to be low enough to guarantee they can profit well with selling 1.5 million copies, 2 million max instead of their obvious way of budgeting where they're expecting 6 to 8+ million sales...if it was an open world non linear rpg like most wrpgs and focused more on gameplay than story than expecting 8 million or so would make sense as said type fo games can more reliably sell that high as most gamers prefer that type of rpg (linear story driven games are usually 50+ hours with very long stretches of cutscenes and most gamers don't have the patience to sit that long which is why jrpgs don't sell as much as wprgs where you're actively in combat/traveling more often)).

Going to UEngine was a step in the right direction. Now, doing rpgs less photorealistic and not focusing on hair physics would be a good idea. AA budget rpgs would help release more rpgs, like octopath and triangle strategy. Remakes in hd2d of their classics would also sell well for a small investment. Also, ironically, their greed has been their downfall, with projects like babylon's fall, starfoam, and others on mobile... Tbh we also have to admit that their senior developers tend to have too much power, like nomura who doesn't know how to manage projects, or the recent game by ffxv team which flopped. Sega and Bandai namco have been more efficient at releasing more games of decent quality while keeping each game 's development cost reasonable.

There is no audience for these games on the xbox first of all. Putting more resources into that market would most likely cost them ore than they would have made back from it. They got the data from prevous releases there that backs this opinion up. Switch and PC has a bigger audience for them and moving towards that community would probably give them a larger roi. The reason they are in this mess is not their exclusive dealings but poor management. They wasted money with GaaS games, they wasted money with NFTs, they wasted money by canceling projects they sunk lots of money into. The reason SE is in this mess is because of poor management from the top down.

Hi, the USA and European layoffs may be a good thing in the long run for Square Enix. One of the turn-arounds for Capcom's fortune was when they got rid of it's Vancouver studio, which did little more than pump out increasingly declining sequels to Dead Rising. And if I remember correctly it was that branch of Capcom that came out with the flop Lost Planet 3, which was the death-knell for that series (though gaming magazines at the time praised it for having a generic beardo main character that they could relate to because he was a single dad). Capcom then focused increasingly on development in Japan. If Square-Enix can dump the worst and most toxic of its Western staff, it may be an overall positive. They may even experience a similar revival to what Capcom is undergoing, who besides making successful remakes, are starting to experiment a bit more as well with some newer titles.

This isn’t just exclusively a Square Enix issue, it’s an industry issue. There’s just too much on the line for games to NOT be making huge figures because resources and staff are becoming more and more scarce and companies also are hurting themselves by cutting staff and not replacing people who have left. I used to dream about being part of the game industry but these days the industry just looks worse and worse and I’ve hear jumpy times it’s not something that you want to make a career of. In short: Video Games are not making enough money in this increasingly inflating economy.
