This cedar deck failed so quickly! Here’s steps we’re taking for the rebuild.

A one minute rundown of how we’re replacing this rotted out cedar deck. The structure was sound, with a little bit of rot on the top of the joists, but the boards had catastrophically failed after about 5 years!

There’s a new wave of businesses making sustainable products and natural, durable building products mainstream and accessible. We were lucky enough to get pointed towards Natalie and @earthandflax

Big Cedar maintains that cedar decking is a sustainable option. If it’s responsibly harvested, I can get behind it as a carbon sink and non plasticized product. It’s important to note that Trex and other decking has a high recycled content, but isn’t as green as options like @theplasticlumberstore
.
The biggest takeaway from this clip - cedar needs to be sealed. We get moisture protection from the Linseed Oil and we get UV protection from the Pine Tar. These products are environmentally friendly, let wood breathe, and don’t peel, flake, or trap moisture like polyurethane. Check out @earthandflax for some incredible products, and decades of wisdom :)

@@GreenBuildingNetwork I used Black PIne Tar on the Trim, Soffit and Fascia on my House build. I am getting ready to build my deck here soon. Which PIne Tar did you use?

Why do you prefer those oils instead of cedar oil?

I think cedar oil is an insecticide. boiled linseed oil is a pretty age-old method of waterproofing and preserving wood. we like it because it's permeable and penetrating!
