With both homelessness rates and the cost of homes continuing to climb in the U.S., one startup described as the “IKEA of houses” is determined to make beautifully-designed, affordable housing more accessible.
What truly sets NODE's homes apart is that they’re designed to be carbon neutral, and some even carbon negative. The startup is confronting both the housing crisis and climate change with their energy efficient homes.
NODE’s houses are shipped in boxes and designed to be constructed quickly. The startup’s goal is to make it possible for the houses to be assembled by just four people in two weeks.

while it sounds nice and everything looking at their test building I'm more curious how safe you'd be living in that house. I don't mean like it will collapse, but if someone decided to break in to the house. There is not very many walls and there is a lot of glass.

This isn't really a new approach. modular homes have been available for a long time. And are generally 30% cheaper than site-built homes. What's new is that, in the last few years, more people are offering flat-pack modular and also environmentally minded people have gotten into the modular home business and are trying to add in more high-end design to the sector. But modular homes have always been sustainable even before Eco businesses got involved. I have long thought that this is the way of the future though. It's only disappointing that the company's website does not provide any pricing. I had to email them to see what the prices are and I'm not even sure they're going to give them to me. I'm not sure I believe they're really going to be affordable. But if they were, I would buy one.

I think it's a lie that they try to make up for in that comment where they say that it produces more energy than it consumes, which in and of itself, is kind of a pointless assertion which could mean that at "idle"(only cooling itself and with no one inside using anything), 51% of the energy used is derived from solar.

@inter peter You're right. I must have written that very late at night. Even my sentence structure there is quite haphazard and seemingly strung together. I suppose the point that I so adeptly failed to hit is that they could be giving that specification for an idle condition which isn't realistic to actual use, ie. 101% percent of the energy used while maintaining basic human conditions whilst no humans are present and in sun conditions that are favorable to power generation and unfavorable to heating of the internal spaces.

Now, as I retro-fit my "little old lady cottage" wherein just last week I Hefted bags of clothing material (that were in dumpsters over the years) to the attic as insulation. Think out of the box is truly free thinking (even if it comes in a box initially)! Your buiding concept IS the new modern that 50 years from now will still be so. There will have to be an architectural genre for your soon-to-be industry standard, something akin to "MidCenturyModern 2nd episode"! I'm a fan of tiny houses, so optimizing space, maximizing insulation, and minimizing energy usage -- at no cost to comfort and convenience is what I like. Might be possible to "build your own house" using parts from the selection of designs -- of that exists. Submissions from customers who built their own homes could be reviewed by the public to even add a "customized" house to the list of designs. Lots of possibilities. Wonder how level and durable these houses are, as well as how easily they can be connected to a "grid" (water, gas, electricity).

The way they have that 'house' setup might work in very warm conditions, but would be terrible in northern climates. They'd lose so much heat, they'd be freezing all the time. There's a reason most houses don't have their rooms spread out like a giant noodle. Having everything together helps keep the heat in. Probably less windows would help, too. But I like the idea of having a house they can connect together. Making the walls out of plastic I would assume would be cheaper. Though I've heard this sales pitch before. They used to say how making CDs and DVDs from tapes and VHS would reduce the price so much, yet instead all the prices were jacked up. So, odds are it wont be cheaper at all, just cost more like everything else.

That House makes no Sense (!) why would I walk between the two Buildings (Bedroom + combined Living Room) & be exposed to the forces of nature (?) encase the Catwalks with Glass to make them Air Tight... And why does the Utility Room need to be in a Conservatory / Greenhouse Style Building? Perhaps a vertical Wind Turbine makes more use of Wind going through the Forest, than the Solar. A pitched Roof, would fit the Solar Energy / Solar Heating Panels better while also mitigate Service Issues, like having to cleaning Debris off the Flat Roof. If you want to keep the Flatroof put Plastic Tubes with Planters on top, to insulate the Roof. And Fog Catchers could help with FreshWater... And why not use Solar Tubes to get light into the Rooms? Or Ceiling Windows, that can help with natural Ventilation, removing the need for an Air Con Unit.

Apartment buildings are not sustainable (also very hideous). Along with commercial buildings they are among the least efficient and least sustainable. Also there is no legislation that mandates single family homes in the US (😂😂😂). Low density single family are great as long as they made from local traditional material that are climate adapted. Apartments building are fine as long they are under 4 floor, when you get higher than that it just destroys the neighborhood.

A great example of Free Market Environmentalism. The first person to introduce me to this idea was Professor Walter Block. The market is already doing a substantially better job at sustainable living than government ever could Having said that, this company is in its infancy and will need to improve before gaining mass adoption. Questions like design, quality, warranty, longevity, price, etc will need to be answered

Hemp flooring. Windows artisanally made from desert sand. We train farm animals to assemble it and then the animals provide free milk and eggs. The roof is a rainwater-collecting compost sluice. In cold climates, we make the whole house out of ice, recovered from unfiltered downstream greywater.

I don't think what they're doing is affordable. From your website, "By the year 2000, it (housing prices) had risen drastically to $119,600." then tell us "Costs for NODE’s homes vary up to $150,000 for 500 square feet" So $119,600 is too much for a home, yet they sell a small 500 sqft "home" for a 31k more than that and you still need to buy land. They have a 264 SqFt option for $99k, and I love tiny houses, but most people don't want to live that way. Additionally both housing sizes are illegal to build/live in in most places, that's not their problem, but it's a hurdle that needed to be overcome to even live legally in one of these "affordable" tiny/small "homes".

Everyone has their passion and mine is to see those who have become homeless find their dwelling. I am really moved by the commentators words of concern for the homeless we have now and the ones to come. I mean can you imagine, no home. No. HOME. It just takes my breath away, it really does. I really want to help. I really want to win a lottery one day and build or RESTORE a building where those who need a warm, dry, clean place to lay their head can hopefully call home. I know the drug epidemic. Well this is my dream and I know, we can move forward away from all this venomous hatred to a place we all can be proud of, once again. Much love to you all and stay safe. Namaste

Love the innovation and the desire to solve a problem behind it. Something to address is making sure that it is appropriate for different climates, the cold North or the hunid South. My biggest personal concern is indoor air pollution. As someone who suffers from multiple chemical sensitivities and allergens, which have been possibly linked to mold exposure, I am looking for a home that my family and I can live in that has zero to low VOC and near impossible to be a habitat for mold. That’s a tall order, I know, but just something to think about.

I want to know if the craftsmanship / codes required to make a home a life time purchase justify if you can simply buy, unpack and "install" one of these things for speed/cost; one of the problems of houses today was that houses were manufactured so fast they have qol problems. I feel the same would apply here

Freethink Yeah...that’s not “affordable” housing then. Seems like a ripoff to me & the fact that it would probably be blown down a hill here in rural TN during tornado season just isn’t worth fooling with. I’ll stick to my 2800sq ft log home (that also has a bunker, mind you) that was $190K :) It’s all about who you know. Stop lying to people about this crap being “affordable” because it simply is NOT true!

A properly built brick building that is properly maintained can last 500+ years (nobody actually knows how long), while this kind of building won't even last 100 years (economy-wise it doesn't stand a chance). It's a great thing for businesses and people that will change with time and need it fast.
