This Camping Trip Turned Dangerous - Fast!

This was the worst night of my life and was very dangerous!!!
In this video I teamed up with Ben from ‪@DaleyOutdoors‬ for a camping on Kinder Scout in the Peak District UK.
8 hours of a broken tent flapping in my face while camping on Kinder Scout in the peak district and 50mph winds that didn't let up one bit for the full 8 hours!!!

Those conditions were no joke. I just watched Simon, a bloke in the woods and East Anglian Bushcraft post a video from up on Kinder Scout with similarly nasty and rainy conditions. Their tents didn't fail, but I believe the winds on the both of you were worse. You made the right call. Once the shelter goes, you need to get down safely. Both of your tents were just not quite hardy enough for those winds up there, especially when the ground won't hold the stakes and there are no rocks to help secure it. Additional guylines at an angle might have added strength, but who knows. Thanks for the video!

Although the UK seems devoid of much of the trees the US has an abundance of, I'm still taken aback by just how beautiful the countryside is. Absolutely amazing. Of course, thank you to Fendi for taking us on the yomp / tab.

@@lindsayclark6453 I've got to agree with you there. I'm from the north of England (Yorkshire) and like you said it has some beautiful scenic countryside but yes Scotland is the best for me too. Me and some of my family would spend Christmas up there at Fort William just below Ben Nevis and it was just gorgeous and we visited a few Lochs around the surrounding area too and the commando memorial. I still go up to Scotland but just for work really and unfortunately it's not often it's in the countryside either or the Highlands, actually I'm in Scotland in November for about 4 weeks or so. Great place and never had a bad experience. All the best 👍 from Yorkshire.

Wow that wind was brutal. I use to be the cub scout leader. We would take them camping. But on one camping trip my pegs went missing. I found a hard wood branch and made my pegs. They were about 12" long. That night the wind got so bad 2 of the boys tent came down. My tent is big just in case someone gets scared. It was me my son and the 2 boys . My teat fared good. The wood pegs held my teat up. So I just use them from then on. Tent is gone, but I still have the pegs. 1. egg 1:23 .... 2. egg 10:49.... 3. egg lol You had it... Don't give up love your videos and your little companion.👍👍🐶🐕‍🦺

It was incredible.

One key way of getting your tent pegs to stay in the ground under conditions like that is to put something heavy directly on top of them such as a heavy stone. The only other way is to have a emergency set of really long tent pegs to use as a backup (something 18 inches or better). One alternative to regular tent pegs that can really stick in the ground? Those metal spirals that screw into the ground to hold onto really big dogs. If you screw a couple of them into the ground really really tight and deep they should hold on tight to just about anything. I can see someone using six or more of them on each corner of the tent and down the sides, and in the back and front. The better ones were designed for holding 90+ pound big boy dogs. A regular metal tent peg is only about six to eight inches long. To short in a windstorm and you’ll be getting up several times a night hammering them back down.

I've been camping in Peak District a few times. It often seems to be windy & rainy. My son & me went a few years ago in Sept. We weren't anywhere like you, but our campsite was on a hill & we spent a night in 60mph winds & torrential rain with our terrified dog, Max. I was awake all night checking the weather & wondering if the tent would blow away. Luckily we had a Vango tent & it was fantastic. While other people's tents were distroyed, ours only ended up with one broken tent pole! Fantastic tent.

That was some wind Gaz, your head must be ringing with all that flapping going on! To be honest surprised that your poles didn't snap under that pressure. As hard as it was, you made the right choice, that wind with the forth coming rain, would of definitely been a nightmare of megalith proportions, have a feeling your tent would of collapsed for sure. Your Fenzl is a proper trooper and is a top notch companion in my books. She does you proud 😁. Glad you're both safe and looking forward to you and Fenzls next adventure. Cheers my friend.

Great vid as always ..Dont let that put you off Kinder Gaz because there is so much more to explore and when you get to know it you will find lots of places where you can escape the worst of the wind and plan accordingly. Grindslow Knoll is very exposed and gets hammered by vertex and vortex winds and the route you took up to it is 3 times longer than the direct route from Edale where you started from. I always take a minimum of 4 MSR Cyclone pegs or the knock off version on kinder which work really well in soft ground and in winter time i take 4 sand/snow pegs. You would have had a better time camping over at the woolpacks which s the boulder field that you passed and it would have been easy to find shelter if you needed to bail. ATB

It was really neat seeing an old style phone booth. We used to have those here in America too, but they were not as amazing as that one you showed us, even though the phone was ripped off. Man, you guys got hammered by that wind! No fun at all that was! No rest for the weary that night! Glad you all got out safe! Stay Frosty Gaz! Much Love & Hugs from Kansas, USA

Believe it or not, exactly the same happened to me in Norfolk of all places in early Sept. Ended up sleeping in the car which I had to park on the tent to stop it blowing away. The flooded campsite didn't help as the pegs kept coming out. Gives me anxiety watching this, brings back memories, not good ones either!

In the Army we were always taught to find a shelterd place from the elements. And with progressive years i found a way to do this. Not always brilliant but always had a good sleep.

I’ve been in the same situation being caught out in unexpected wind like that. Poles bent, the lot. I now carry my delta pegs on every camp regardless they have saved me a good few times. Stay safe man

It's the look you gave us here 15:25 that kind of 'someone walk my body off the hill in the morning' kind of look. That did not look fun at all, but it was fun to watch because it made me feel cosy even though my house is cold lol

That’s pretty dang windy! If you pop the poles loose and stuff all your kit in the inner its pretty quick to turn turn the tent around and stick the poles back in.
